Hey I just found this site by chance trying to diagnose my problem. The engine sounds like a sewing machine, granted. however this is very new. Once it is warmed up, I can hear the valves clicking. They speed up as I go faster. The engine sounds normal at idle. It does sound like a diesel engine. Had a 2001 Jetta TDI, P.O.S. was my trade in for my 3. The sound is driving me nuts and I am thinking I am doing damage. I change my oil every 5k and I run only synth. The oil level is normal.
Help.

What you are describing is quite possibly normal. While there are many reasons this engine makes noises; some normal and some not, I think what you are hearing is the injectors. If you search the forum you will find a few video's of engines that truly have problems; in addition I believe there is a video that indicates some noises related to the IM. If you know someone with a mz3 you could see if your engine sounds the same as theirs.

Thanks for the reply Jason. But this sound is new. I have had the car since 06. I am the only owner and this started yesturday morning. It is very loud and not normal. I know what the injectors sound like. The sewing machine clicking is normal and has been with me since 06.
