I'm a skinny guy who loves to eat...and have come up with some pretty good eats on the cheap.
One I'm having right now, apple pie a la mode, $3.23 tax-in.
2x McD's apple pie - $1.39
1x McD's chocolate sundae - $1.69
1x medium size drink cup
1x McFlurry/Blizzard spoon
Step 1.
Put 2 pies into medium drink cup.
Step 2.
Dump sundae into cup.
Step 3.
Add nuts if you wish. Enjoy.
Alternatively, you can try the strawberry sundae with the berry pies, or any other combo you so desire. Serves 2 on a date, or 1 hungry mofo like me.
I also have "ghetto" recipes for other things like fusion hor d'oeuvres, pimped out instant noodles, etc. Please feel free to share yours!

assuming you have access to a chinese kitchen...
a. If you're cooking the Nissin brands from Japan that have the thinner noodles, make sure you "cold rinse" the noodles and use separately boiled water for the soup base.
b. If you're cooking the Korean brands with the thicker noodles, make sure they're cooked thoroughly and then "cold rinse" as well.
--------------------------------------------
1. In a separte bowl, pre-make the soup base, along with the "onion and mushroom" packs by mixing it with a little hot water. This is also a good time to add the sesame seed oil pack or in the case of the Korean brands, add your own (hence chinese kitchen).
2. Throw in any left-overs/Spam you may want to add into the pre-mix soup base. Nuke for 30 sec to 1min.
3. In a chinese kitchen, use the boiled water from a kitchen water boiler to start off cooking the noodles. This allows you to "cook" your noodles ASAP rather than waiting for water to boil.
4. Raid the chinese herbal cabinet or in some old school chinese homes, open the never used vacuum seal unit (aka dishwasher) for dried shitake mushrooms. Throw 3 -4 into the hot water of the cooking noodles...5 if it's your birthday.
5. Cold rinse your noodles before adding to pre-made soup. Revel in the fact that you're having the best instant noodles money CAN'T buy.

Chances are, your cheap, or cant find shit to make your food with. You can also make casear salad :D
If you cook your noodles (pasta noodles, not chinese noodles) you can use Caesar salad dressing. Its quite good, as weird as it sounds.... Read More
The cheaper alternative
You can also just cook the noodles in olive oil (canola or sunflower will do if your cheaper) and just add chili pepper seeds.
Noodles 900g $2.29
Caesar dressing $2.49
Total $4.28
Noodles 900g $2.29
Chili Pepper seeds $1.10
$3.39
Makes 4 servings.

so whats "fusion hor d'oeuvres"
The main ingredient in the fusion hor d'oeuvres can also be used in the "pimped out instant noodle" for authenticity: Wakame or flavoured seaweed.
1x block of brie cheese
1x mega pack of pre-packaged wakame
1. Cut cold block of brie cheese into morsel/bite size pieces.
2. Take one strip of wakame and wrap the cheese.
3. Tooth-pick the sucker...next!
These taste surprisingly fusion...melty and funky brie cheese, mixed with hints of teriyaki, green onions and MSG. YUM!
No need for blandly cooked and out of place bak-choy and completely mis-used ginger to give it that fusion flava!

The Baco-Nator Tap-a-tapa's
1x pack of your favourite bacon
1x pack/box of pitted dates
1x maple syrup/honey or for the ghetto college student, Aunt Jamima syrup
1x aluminum foil
------------------------------
1. Cut your bacon strips into 1/2's or 1/3's if you're really hurting. Lay them all out on one side...you only want one of your hands touching pork when the other is either picking your nose or picking up dates.
2. Wrap the bacon around the date. Do 3 at a time and tooth-pick them suckers.
3. Once you have enough to satisfy, plop them on a piece of foil. Bake @ 350 for about 10 min or when bacon sizzles.
4. Remove from oven, drizzle with syrup...while you queue up some incomprehensible latin/spanish tune. Enjoy!

BBQ Salmon Bits
The Loblaws/SuperStore @Dundas/Trafalgar often has salmon bits, essentially trimmings consisting of the belly, tail and other parts, left over from fillet preparation. Usually 1.5-2lbs for $2. You do need to clean/de-scale/de-bone!
After cleaning, place in an old rectangular cake pan that has been lined with aluminum foil.
Liberally add olive oil, salt & pepper to taste. Optional capers, lemon juice & Zest, sliced black olives.
Cover the pan with another sheet of foil. Ensure that the seal is tight.
Place on grill heated up to to medium high.
Cook for 5-6 minutes depending on amount.
Serve over pasta/rice, in a bun ( with mayo & pickles& hot sauce) as a sandwich.......

Bacon wrapped dates are the shit!!!! Most Spanish tapas restaurants will serve these (at least the ones in the states). First time hearing about these, I was very skeptical. Tasted them anyways, and have never regretted in since. It is a wicked smokey creamy taste. I would highly recommend them.

Gourmet hot chocolate:
1. heat up milk with a microwave in a mason jar (ie. pasta sauce jar)
2. break off 1 - 2 squares of Lindt Dark Chocolate squares...60% cocoa and above for me, thanks!...add them to the heated milk.
3. 1 heaping table spoon full of Carnation hot chocolate mix, more if you're a choco-holic like me.
IMPORTANT:
4. Using screw-on lid for the mason jar, close the jar and shake it like a cocktail for about 20 - 30 sec or until all traces of melted chocolate is gone from the side of the jar.
5. Find a nice mug and pour out the smoothest, creamiest and frothiest hot chocolate you just made without a steam machine.

^^^that looks kinda wrong...lol...
I want to refocus this thread...there's really nothing unhealthy about the receipes I proposed...they are all time tested throughout my college years and have stuck with me. I will one day pass all this wisdom and knowledge to my children...lol...myabe I should write a book on cheap eats...
What I'd like to get out from others is their experience with say, a nice authentic Mexican taco place with good price...or find a nice wonton noodle place.
Wonton Noodles...my buddy opened up a new shop at Hwy 7/Warden and it's called "Wonton Hut"...they do authentic wontons in a noodle soup base. These used to be bottom dollar fares, but ppl have now acquired the taste...but @ $4.50 per bowl, it's still good food at a decent price, when compared to a MacDonald's meal. I told my friend Eddie to go upscale, like Spring Rolls and charge $7.50 for the wonton noodles and go for the "foodie" crowd...lol...we'll see how it goes...
So a "foodie" I am not and I despise the term...it's like calling a Chinese guy a "mathie"...just cuz you like to eat, it doesn't make you any more special than the guy on the next table eating to feed his hunger...
Anyway, the city used to have more niche eateries where you can find good food at amazing prices...so please share as I don't get out/around as much anymore.

Adding rice to anything is also a great idea!
I've spent many a nights on a diet of Chunky soup mixed with copious amounts of rice...Chunky Beef was a favourite, until I discovered Chicken a la King.
Chicken a la King
- 2 pieces of chicken breast, sliced.
- minced garlic
- chopped onions
- 1 can of Campbell's Chunk Chicken a la King
1. Use a bit of oil and sizzle garlic and onions together.
2. Add sliced chicken and cook.
3. Add can of Chunky Chicken a la King.
4. If serving a larger crowd or if you're hurting, add a 1/2 can of milk to the mix.
5. Simmer til your pasta or rice is ready.
You can also do soemthing similar with the Clam Chowder for a seafood linguine. Potatoes in the clam chowder becomes a novel ingredient, conversation piece and healthy carbs.

I do something similar to this all the time. I use canned Cream of Mushroom soup, and simmer it with frozen veggies to make sauce for pasta. If I'm feeling fancy, I will cook some throw in some chicken strips/nuggets in the oven to make a ghetto version of chicken alfredo.

I went fishing near Gogama this past week at Three Point Lake. I renamed it Three Fly Lake (horse flies, deer flies, and every other fackin' fly that bites). I had a great time. Now I'll get to the point.
BLUEBERRIES !!!
I picked a 2 gallon bucket of real wild blueberries on the way out. Cost - Free!
I came home and made a pie, or two.... or three. Lard, flour, butter, and salt cost about 35 cents a pie.
Bryer's French Vanilla ice cream was on sale for $1.99. So I bought one, or two... or three.
Just ate one half a pie with three scoops of ice cream. Cost about 99 cents total.
Taste? ... priceless.

that's what my mom's generation had when food was scarce...nowadays, no ofeence, it's just lazy food...but in the spirit of this thread, at least add a fried egg.
Lazy Man's Fried Egg
1. put a drop of oil or a smidge of butter on a small microwavable plate...spread it.
2. crack an egg or two on the plate.
IMPORTANT
3. use a fork or tooth pick and poke a few holes per yoke.
4. put in microwave, try to use medium heat for 1 min per egg for runny ones.
5. dump into your maggie/ketchup/fish sauce/hoi sin sauce + rice.

KD has heroin in the cheese mix, therefore bulk barn's mix will never compare.

^Man the way we make it is so much better than KD. We usually use like twice as much cheese powder as normal KD for that extra cheesy goodness. Also for $e or so you cab buy a whole pack of pasta and enough cheese powder to lake way more than 4 boxes of KD.

since you wanted to get back on topic lol
a new food place just opened up on derry/mclaughlin.
its called dragon buffet, its really not a buffet lol
but they have some great tasting chinese food, there's literally four tables there LOL
so you are expected to do a take out. they also have a different type of "chicken balls" :)
and if you want cheap chinese food, then go to OCEANS on queen st.
they have the best OCEANS hot chinese food ever, all the other locations taste like garbage -______-
AYCE food would be the best at CHAKO in Markham, go there on a friday/saturday for lunch.
they have really good selections for lunch, compared to KOREAN BBQ GRILL house in DT Toronto.
its also cheaper than the DT ones! :)
ASIAN BUFFET in Etobicoke on Rexdale.
CRAZY ass buffet, the food is great and the price is even better!!
Lunch: $7.50 monday to friday, $8.50 on weekends
Dinner: $9.99 monday to thursday, $12.99 friday to sunday
omg i feel like a fat ass -__________________-

Ocean's is shady business. I hate going there. Good thing I don't have to go often since my parents always go without me.
As for the Derry/McLaughlin Chinese place, is it in the new place, with the BMO? Maybe I'll grab some buddies and walk over in a bit... xD

Well... If we're talking about the one at that Brampton mall (don't remember the name), I feel like I could be robbed at any time while I'm in there lol.
Maybe I worded incorrectly... Ocean's isn't a shady business... Just the area? xD
But, to stay on topic; Little Caesar's is awesome! Those walk-in deals are absolutely amazing in value xD

I has the munchies... Mmm.... Post-workout lemon dill tuna...
The area around Ocean's isn't that bad, just the odd stabbing/shooting, once a year. That's Brampton/Shopper's World for ya. I concur with Prinsesa though, the hot food and bakery in Ocean's is awesome - even compared to the stuff at T&T. Ocean's however, is trumped by Foody's in Markham... The hot food section runs the length of the store!
Whole bunch of us were at that Wild Wings last night after Tasr :) I can see my house from there

Gotta love the cheap eats...
What I want to hear about is the "specialty" places that are a great bang for the buck...
Like has anyone here tried Phils Original BBq on college? I heard its awesome...(Love real bbq)
Also...that poutine place that is on Adelaide? - mmmm cheese gravy and fries... I heard they have like thirty varieties of poutine!
I live out in the durham region but would drive to Buffalo for a good chicken wing (if it was worth it,lol)

2. a good burger place like Johnny's Burger used to be before they just let a couple of old greek guys supervise a bunch of chinese visa students flipping burgers...I loved Johnny's for their burger and fries combo, with gravy for like $3.99...but now it's just mediocre...

Oceans at Shoppers World (Brmapton Mall) isnt the best.

I was told that the ice tea wasnt on unlimited refill and you have to buy it at full price everytime you get another one.

It's cuz iced tea is a light drink. Stuff like Coke, Sprite and other stuff fills you up, so that you take less.
And which is the one on Queen? Queen and what?

The old guys are in Pickering now – Kip’s Flaming Burgers at Brock and Kingston.
I told the guy (skinny with long biker hair) that he looked familiar, and he says, “I was at my Uncle Johnny’s burger shop up on VP before. He’s in Greece now, collecting the royalty cheques. LOL

The Great Bacon Odyssey: Bacon, the Other Crispy Brown Meat
http://www.wired.com/geekdad/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/IMG_2218-660x495.jpg
It’s important to pace yourself when on a geek quest of any sort, and this is especially true of those that, like mine, present a certain amount of personal risk. Having last week eaten a (beef) hamburger wrapped in 10 slices of (pork) bacon, I felt it wise to wait a week before attempting another such feat of consumption.
I had read online about several people, over the past five years or so, trying their hand at a burger made out of ground bacon, with no other meat included. I hadn’t intended to try it until later in my Great Bacon Odyssey, but several people suggested it after last week’s triumph, so I started thinking about it more and more. Then it occurred to me: In order to be truly worthy of me, and of the GeekDad name that means so much to me, my quest would have to take me beyond what other people have already done. And to make that possible, I would first have to prove that I was serious. I would have to conquer the bacon burger.
First, I needed to figure out how many slices I would need. I wanted to use the uncured bacon again, with no dry rub or any such thing, because I knew that if I were to have a prayer of eating the whole thing, I would need the burger to have as little salt in it as possible. I wanted a burger weighing about one-third of a pound, but I don’t have a kitchen scale.
The package had 22 slices and, according to the package, weighed 12 ounces. Assuming all slices were cut uniformly (which appeared to my eye to be the case), each slice weighed about 0.55 ounces. That would mean 10 slices (after rounding up), because 1/3 of a pound is about 5.33 ounces. But I wanted the burger’s cooked weight to be 1/3 of a pound, not its raw weight, and of course bacon loses a lot of fat during cooking. A little research indicated that the likelihood was that my bacon would lose about half of its weight during cooking. That seemed a bit high to me, especially since the bacon I’d bought had a good percentage of meat in each slice, so I figured starting with 19 slices, for a weight of 10.45 ounces, would cover me.
I wanted to cook the burger under the broiler, as I did with the bacon-wrapped burger last week, on a rack set over a Pyrex dish to allow the rendered fat to drain. Having read about the difficulties people making such burgers have had keeping them together, I decided to add one large egg to the food processor along with the 19 slices of bacon. I ground the bacon and the egg together, then, using my hands, pulled the mixture out and used a hamburger press to make a burger. It is possible that my hands have been greasier at some point in my life, but if so I have (fortunately) forgotten it. I was not quite prepared for the raw burger to look like pure fat, and I must admit that it didn’t look very appealing. But it was for science, so I soldiered on!
I put the burger on the rack-Pyrex assembly and slid it under the broiler. Having learned a lesson from last week, I turned the stove exhaust fan to high immediately. I peeked in on it as it cooked, and it seemed to be cooking nicely, with tons of little fat bubbles sizzling on top. After seven minutes or so, I took it out to turn it over, and was pleased how easily it flipped. Five minutes later, it looked done, so I took the temperature of the inside (you need to be careful with pork, of course), and it registered at 160 degrees Fahrenheit, so out it came. Now it looked like food, and smelled delicious.
For the rest of the story, I give you a video (below), shot by my lovely wife Jen using my iPhone 4. In this video you will see me eat the entire burger, with the exception of two bites I let my kids have, because what kind of a geek dad would I be if I didn’t let them try it? With a Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA to wash it down and some mustard to cut the fatty taste, it was enjoyable for a while. After about half of it, it became more of an effort to keep eating, as you’ll see, but I did it, and could certainly have managed to eat the bites my kids took. Note: If you should notice a whirring sound in the video, that’s the fan behind my head, blowing out the window to clear some of the smoke from the cooking out of the house.
Would I recommend it? Reservedly, yes, but mostly because afterward you can honestly say you’ve eaten a burger made out of bacon, and not many people can say that. If you don’t care about the “honor” of it, I suggest sharing it with at least one other person, because it’s not likely you’ll actually want to eat more than half. I suggest uncured bacon so the salt doesn’t make your blood pressure spike. Cook it the way I did unless you want it to bathe in its own fat as it cooks. Oh, yes, and wash it down with something with a bite to it, because otherwise the taste of the bacon fat will likely overwhelm your palate.
As I promised, the awesome folks at ThinkGeek will send a $25 gift certificate to the first person who suggested the bacon burger to me. As far as I can tell, that person is dyarbrough, who left a comment on last week’s post. If you think you suggested it to me before July 6, please send me an email before the end of the day and I’ll check on it. And please keep those ideas coming! There are many more posts to come, and more gift certificates to earn.
See the Flickr set of the preparation and cooking. Read all the Great Bacon Odyssey articles.
(And check out the awesome crocheted bacon slice my awesome wife made for me!)
