Which is better, to use the tiptronic more often than automatic or less often, and rely on the auto to do all the work?
I usually only use manual to slow down without braking, and briefly for accelerating. Is it better to not switch from auto to manual or is using the tiptronic better for the car?

neither is particularly better for the car, unless ur constantly hitting the redline in tiptronic and letting it bounce off the limit. Tiptronic is merely there for a fun aspect to an automatic, its not any better or worse for the car.
Is there any benefit to using the transmission to slow down the car?
I always figure wearing the tranny less would be better than any savings by not using the brakes. Brakes are not that expensive to replace in comparison.

yes thats true, replacing a set of brakes is cheaper than replacing a tranny, but again aslong is its not all the time its not a major issue. its just not something you'd want to make a habit as it does put unneccesary strain where its not needed.

As long as you're not abusing the tranny you should be fine. Downshifting shouldn't be a problem either as long as you're not downshifting in to crazy high rpms.

Tiptronic or not, it depends on your driving habits.
transmission fluid is one of the things you can keep an eye on.
