View Full Version : Kind of iffy on new brakes...

I just got my Magnum rotors and Hawk HPS pads installed last night, and went to take them for a spin. I followed the bedding procedure as best I could (multiple 50km/h - 0km/h stops is kinda hard in city) ... but even after that, the brakes don't feel as good as the OEM stuff I had on before. I'm going to try bedding them again today...so what gives? Everyone has said the hawk pads are great, but they don't feel all that good. Also if I'm lightly on the brakes you can hear the pads grinding/rubbing against the rotors pretty clearly...it's clearly the pad material against the rotors, but should it be even making that sort of noise?

Bright sides, my steering wheel doesn't vibrate under moderate braking anymore and other then the grinding noise, I am not getting the squeeling some people report. I really just hope they need a bit more breaking in before they function 100%, right now though I can't even lock up my tires for the life of me... Oh, and I do have plenty of brake fluid (it's right near the "max" line on the reservoir) so that's not it.

You need to do some really aggressive near-stops. The brakes need to get up to temp. Did your rotors turn bluish? The best time to bed your brakes is late at night using off ramps.

I went for another spin today and did what you suggested and they have improved a bit more. I did get a little squeek out of the tires under braking now (which I couldnt for the life of me do last night) so there is improvement. I at least feel decently safe with them at this point, but I was really hoping for more brake force then this.
