Only owning Honda's this is my first Mazda. I am not overly impressed with the fuel consumption on this car. I drive it like an old gradma and im still getting poor fuel economy.
Mind you the car has 600km on it and its mostly city driving. My question is to all Mazda 3 owners...does it get better after 2,000km? or does it just really suck!

Thats terrible, and not right! I would only assume it will get better! My Escape with a 200hp 3.0L V6 gets 9.5L/100kms!!

Give it time to break in, 600kms is way too little to judge from!

It was my understanding that fuel consumption on a brand new car is crap?

I dont recall how many clicks it takes (14,000km is standing out in my mind), but there will come a point when your mileage will get much better.

Let the engine loosen up. It is sucking fuel because it is still tight and working a little harder to push the pistons. I don't know how long it takes, I am assuming every car and every make is a little different but 600 km is not a whole lot of k. I don't even think my car is fully broken in yet and it has 3600 km on it (2010 M3 GS 2.0 liter)

What type of driving you do is important. If you do alot of highway driving your fuel economy will be better than most. If you do mostly City driving and most of that in stop and go traffic you'll never achieve the fuel economy noted by Mazda.

Thanks for the reply's. I have under 1/2 tank left of gas in my car and since I filled up i've driven 260km. The DTE is telling me I have only 190 left which is a total of 450km per tank if im lucky...... I get that cars are not as good on gas when they are new but this is my 6th car and I've never seen it this bad.

I've got 85,000kms on my Escape, and 130,000 on my suby, and both are getting better than average on them... Just give it time!

Well you could go back to driving Honda's that make no power until 6000rpm? Just joking.

I am getting around 450-550km/tank but that is mostly spirited city driving so I don't complain. I would definitely say I don't granny this car. I would think your consumption should improve a lot after a few thousand clicks.

That is a little odd. Try resetting your averages right now, the car may have been idled alot or something before you picked it up. I reset mine after the first 120 kms, and with a little city and a fair amount of somewhat spirited hwy driving (okay, some spirited city driving also) is averaging 8.9l/100kms, and I am only at like 330 kms.

Just a note...these computers in the cars are not very accurate...referring to the MID screen in the GT's...I will easily get over 500kms on my first tank!

I get 8.5/100 with my speed3 and thats mostly in town with spirited driving, you should get better once your break in is done

I get around 13 Litres /100 kms on a constant basis and probably do about 95% city driving with heavy stop and go traffic. So it is possible it could be normal.

I drive auto......for those people driving manual you will get a lot more KM's.

At 7000 km, I'm getting between 10/100 and 11/100 with probably 80% city driving. This actual economy measured at when filling it up. The car computer is more pessimistic. Usually shows between 10.5 and 12/100.

My 2008.5 GX (manual) has 13,000 km's on it and I do between 6.9 and 7.2L/100. About 60/40 highway driving.

the auto gets rated slightly better EPA mileage than the 6MT in the GT's I thought...Auto isn't as bad as it used to be, of course, being 5 speed auto doesn't hurt. Auto usually ends up with a taller gearing ratio which improves mileage.

Honestly, I don't think you can get a good reading from only 600kms. If the car was full when you bought it, then you'd likely not fill it until 500kms on the odo. Record the kms, then drive till empty. Then record the odo and how much fuel to refill. Say the difference in odo readings is 500km and you had to put in 40l. Well that would be 8l/100km. But suppose the pump clicked of early at 35litres? That'd be 7l/100. If you're able to top up to 45litres that'd be 9l/100.

Get the picture? You need 3 or 4 fillups to get a good sample, and account for machine differences.

Don't sweat it. Yet.

That sounds about the same as my 08 2.0L did for the first couple of tanks. By the time I got 1,500-2000 km on it mileage improved quite a bit and by the first oil change (4 months, ~5,500 km) I was consistently averaging 6.5-6.8 L/100km, which is where it has stayed for spring-summer-fall driving.

In the winter fuel consumption is 8-9 L/100km but I'm driving up over Blue Mountain every day and often have to drive on un-plowed roads with 10-20 cm of snow.
