Lately I've been having problems with the cruise control operating on my '04 Mazda3 GT. When it's on and running, it seems to have problems maintaining speed. It keeps surging forward and then slowing down to correct. I've sent it to a mechanic to have it flushed, cleaned, you name it, but is still keeps jumping. He says it seems like the torque converter just keeps kicking on and off. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Take it to the dealer as there is a TSB on this issue (Cruise Surge).Hopefully your still under warranty.

he has a GT, so there isn't a TSB on it

Makes no difference, as he's experiencing the same symptoms so 'maybe' it's the same problem as the TSB mentions....and if so, and still under warranty, it should get fixed.

yes it does
the flash does NOTHING to cure any cruise control problems on a 2.3

how do I know? because I did it myself!

As I said 'Maybe' it's the same problem but if your reflash did nothing it sounds quite odd, as I doubt there would be much of a difference in the programming between either vehicle (as pertaining to the cruise). And in stating 'maybe', that left it open that it would/could be another issue.Either way his best bet is to take her in to the dealer to solve the problem.

it's not a maybe
there was never any common cruise control problems with the 2.3... there was nothing wrong with its programming and thus nothing was "fixed"
I thought the same thing you did (because the 2.0 HAD cruise control issues) and flashed a 2.3 car anyway because it had cruise control issues... DID NOTHING

turns out it was ABS wiring problem

bottom line is, different engine means completely different programming... it's that simple
like I said, the TSB was for the 2.0, not 2.3

Like I also said, it could be another issue, so I don't understand your huffyness but I still find it odd about the programming as I had a cruise surge problem with my 2.3L and the tech told me the same thing as you said but, they updated the flash 'anyway' on my vehicle and the problem was solved! But i still agree it may be another problem....Just throwing things out there....you can't diagnose things over the internet lol.
