Took my Mazda 3 in for its first oil change this morning. I don't work near that dealership anymore but figured I'd give them a shot for my future business. I knew to go to Vincent from previous posts (which is another reason why this site is so popular - ie. feedback). He is a pleasure to deal with, excellent service.

As for my 3, I was going to put synthetic in, but was told by Vincent that new cars should use regular oil for about a year, something to do with synthetic being thinner and the internals need the thicker oil to act as a "coating". This is the first i've heard of this but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I also asked them to check the slight idle shake when i'm stopped at lights. They had three different people check it out and had the mechanic supervisor take a road test with me. He felt the slight shake and said that all Mazda's do that (which again I couldn't verify so took his word for it). So i'll leave it at that. Maybe you guys can comment on both oil and slight shaking.

All in all, was a great experience. The shuttle dropped and picked me up from work (which was kind of out of the way) which was a nice touch. My car was even given a quick wash, and it needed it! Vincent even threw in some Mazda swag and because of his great service he's definately won my future business. You have more faith in dealerships when a service representative goes out of his way to make your experience a good one.

I went down to see Joe and up to see Jeff but both were out, the secretary said they took the RX-8 out to scope for girls......j/k

A lot of different theory's around dino vs. synthetic oil and when to use them. It is pretty much accepted wisdom nowadays with modern engines and tolerances, that your car will only benefit from synthetic oil from as soon as you want to start with it.

As for saying that all Mazda's shake at idle when stopped, the tech supervisor is either an idiot of epic proportions, or is trying to fluff you off by saying that. All Mazda's do not shake at idle, slightly or otherwise. Particularly if the car is fully warmed up and at normal operating temperature. Neither my 2005 hatch, nor my MS3 shake at idle and all of the previous Mazda's I have owned never did either. Total B.S.

I heard it's best to wait on synthetic since dino oil will allow your engine to break in better than synthetic will. I'd agree with Vincent on that.

Like I said CJ, ask a bunch of different techs, you'll get a lot of different answers to this. Just do a search on the board for all the different debates and discussion around this topic. I don't even want to go there other than personally, I don't agree with that notion. However, you're not going to do any harm using dino oil for a year, so it really doesn't matter at the end of the day.

However, the lead tech telling the OP that all Mazda's shake at idle was ludicrous...

Oh I forgot one thing: Even though I agree with Vincent on the fact you should wait before switching, I think a year is too long. I basically swapped my oil at 2000 km, then at 8000 I switched to synthetic.

Yeah prior to switching my motor mounts, I've never had a Mazda shake at idle...

CJ, LOL, I switch my oil at 2000km too... :) I let the factory oil stay until then. I was mainly disagreeing with the need to wait a 'year' also.
