View Full Version : Sound coming from rear left wheel...

Hey guys,

Bought a used 2005 Mazda3 Sport GT hatchback a couple of months ago (around 75k on it), and been loving it so far. However, there is this one niggling noise I hear, that is really bothering me.

When I have my window down, or when I drive by a wall (that reflects soundwaves back at the car), I can hear a rubbing sound coming from the rear left wheel.

It sounds like the brake scraping the rotor, and I can hear it when going slowly (the sound isn't continuous - it sounds like it's hitting one spot every full rotation, so it gets faster when I speed up, etc.). Sounds a lot like the sound you get when first using the brakes in the morning...

Anyway, I was just wondering if there were any obvious or well known potential causes you guys could point me to for this noise, and any quick fixes to try? The brakes themselves work fine, and you can't hear the noise with the windows up, or on the highway. It's just sort of embarrassing driving around town, knowing your car is emitting a noise like that to passers-by. :(

Thanks for any help folks!

I should point out I don't really get "vibrations" when using my brakes, so I can't imagine it would be something like a warped rotor. The car also would have been safetied within the past few months...

I also can't imagine it would be a rust patch from sitting on the car lot, because like I said, it's been a couple of months now, and I've put around 1.5k kilometres on it myself since buying it.

Bad bearing or seized hand brake?

I've had bad wheel bearings before on my previous car, and they were way, way louder than this, haha.

You might be onto something with the hand brake idea though. I'll have a look, and report back! :)

I got the same problem. I've taken it to Jimmy's (Street Performance) & they could not find anything wrong with it either.
