Its called "sidelaunching" and is used only in certain shipyards. Most yards launch by sliding the boat in stern first.
The Collingwood Shipyards that shut down in the mid-80 launched all their hulls sideways. It was an amazing thing to see...and in the old days very dangerous. Guys knocking out the stops beneath the boats would occasionally get crushed when the hulls released before expected.
Now, our local dragon boat team that competes around the province is called, "The Sidelaunchers".
