There are lots of discussions on the relative merit of different makes of alarm systems, but I would like to know how a third party alarm system would work side by side with the Mazda anti-theft system supplied with the Mazda3. Will the third party unit replace the functions or override the Mazda unit? Is it possible to use the two system interchangeably ? For example - be able to selectively arm the two systems or arm only the Mazda unit.

I am considering the purchase of a car starter/alarm system and would like to clarify some of these issues first. I am not even sure that my car has an antitheft unit ! I remember I refused to pay any extra for a security system when asked by the dealer.

if you didn't pay for an alarm - I doubt you have one.
I would remove the keyless entry system, and have a VIPER alarm installed

Options for alarms are beyond belief, and totally up to you to decide
however, with our cars being more and more common, people know every aspect of the Mazda 3 - including where the electrical components would be

I do suggest you invest in a back-up battery and tilt sensors.
Remote starter on a MT is extra. Have the installer time the starter to a max 3 minutes.

Also when you have everything installed - make sure you know how to operate the transmitters, etc.
So many people neglect to even want to learn how to use their alarm properly. Make sure you learn how to read the chirps and how to bypass the alarm in case the transmitter doesn't work (lost, dead batttery, dropped in pool)

you can use both but in my case i have a viper and it overides the stock one.

and to know if your car has one. depends on the year and what trim. lock urself in and open a door and try and start the car. if it dont start you have one, if it does then you dont.

I tried, and looks like I don't have any alarm. Quick question - With the Viper Alarm system, if I use the Mazda key/remote to drive, will the alarm system remain off unless I arm it with the viper remote? In other words, unless I use the Viper remote to turn the alarm system "ON", I can just use my car as I do now ?

yep, thats right, you can use whatever one to arm the car (or lock the doors in ur case) but the viper will take over if used.

for example. if i lock my car with stock alarm. i can use the viper to unlock it, but i cant use the viper to lock and stock to unlock. it will unlock the doors but not disarm the alarm

Can you post a pic of the OEM keyless entry transmitter.

Thanks guys. I decided to install just the remote starter - without the alarm. The remote for the starter works great. I noticed though that when I lock the doors with the Starter's Remote the red light that blinks to confirm the Mazda imobilizer does not come on. The Starter's indicator blinks. If I press the Mazda's remote to lock in addition to the remote, the red light come's on - in addition to the remote's light. Does the remote starter maintains the Mazda immobilizer or does it bypass or negates it?

I have the same question.... anyone?
Even more basic, what does the 2010 mazda3 oem security system actually do?

Im in the same position: going to buy a remote starter, but im not sure the aftermarker security system/alarm is worth it....

A decent aftermarket alarm should have a factory arm and disarm wire. These two wires are installed into the cars factory alarm and used to either arm/disarm the cars immobilizer with the aftermarket unit. If not installed, theres no way of telling the factory alarm to either arm or disarm the immobilizer.

Thanks. I've discovered that the Viper unit is independent of the factory installed immobilizer. Both works fine - the immobilizer red light still blinks. An added bonus for me is that if I lock the car (ARM)with the Viper Remote, it also disables the key start.
