I fixed an iPhone's broken screen (not mine, but a freebie I'm fixing)...only to find one of the connector (#3) inside is busted, so the earpiece/proximity sensor isn't working 100%.

This is connector #3...and it is very tiny. I have the parts on order, and have asked around for repair shops....

Most of the local iphone repair shops appear to charge a premium for iphone repairs...let's call it an iphone-tax...

this is a very simple repair that needs a magnifying glass/microscope and steady hands...neither of which I have...but typically, this should be a $20 - 30 job at most for soldering the new connector in...

Anyone have experience/expertise in doing this?

I've found a place at a reasonable price...if all goes well, I will post a review.

I found this place called Ming Wireless at Dundas/University right across from the police station. For $40, he replaced connector AND the sound/proximity sensor IC. For the same repairs, the other shops in TO, namely irepair.ca and ishoprepair.ca (sp?) wanted over $100.

This guy Ming knows what he's doing. He owns the shop and does the repairs. The price is very reasonable and so is the turnaround, usually within an hr if you waited. Since he had to replace an extra module, we left it over night, but he charged us the same price he quoted us.

All in all, no complaints...he helped complete the resurrection of a busted iphone that I replaced the screen on. Discounting the free phone, replacing the screen myself costed $30CDN in parts + my own labour of ~1.5hrs + $40 to repair the connector/sound/proximity sensor...I think it was worthwhile, considering if I paid for all the repairs outright, it'd be close to $200.

In conclusion, it's not too bad to attempt iphone repairs yourself, and if you screw up or run into something unexpected (like a broken connector from previous repairs), it doesn't cost too much to get it fixed by a professional.

I didn't ask him about cases, and I have no reason to go back there in the near future...hehe...but I have a feeling he can fix any phone you throw at him.

But go ahead and give him a call. I think his wife answers the phones.
