View Full Version : Trunk lock seized

I tried opening my trunk the other day with the key and the key wouldn't go in fully. No matter what i did i couldn't get it in. I was getting my oil changed at Mazda the day after and had them look at it and they told my it has seized. It is completely rusted and cannot be repaired. Has anyone come across this? They want to charge me to replace the lock. Shouldn't this be covered under warranty? I have NEVER heard of any lock seizing on the inside. I still have my extended warranty, but my 5yr rust warranty has passed. I can still release the trunk hatch using the switch on the inside of the car.
2004 Mazda 3 sedan.

This why you need to lube it all the time...every time i cahnge my oil i lube it...the only thing to do is replace the lock..i don't think warranty would cover it at all

your bumper to bumper warranty (or an extended warranty) would've covered this.
if you have no warranty left, then you're paying out of pocket.

I would definitely force the issue for having it covered under your extended warranty!! It's not a wearable item. Yes, it should be lubricated over time but it's not like brake, belts or shocks/struts. My 12 year old car I had before this never had any trunk lock issues so a 5 year old car shouldn't have that problem
Are you in the GTA? If so I would check out one of the affiliate dealerships.

On my dad's trunk lock it seized from 1. not using it(using key to open) and 2. not lubing it.
It cost him almost $400 just for the lock
So yes it can happen if you don't take care of it IMO

I agreed with you...? :loco
I said I didn't have an issue on my old car and previous to that I said "yes, it should be lubricated over time..."
Locks are an expensive fix.

Thanks all. I am in the Gta and will be returning to the dealership to talk to them about fixing it under my extended warranty. I do use the trunk release from inside the car more often than using the key, but this still shouldn't happen IMO. I do all my oil changes at the dealership ->should they be lubing it each time?

Sorry about that i was only saying what happened to my dad's car and how expensive it was...i wasn't saying anything about you:blush

Spray some good penetrating oil in the lock, and work the key in and out.... It will likely free up. Use release-all or something better than WD40...

yes the should have been lubing it
"should" and "do" are different things
I've never see anyone do a "full inspection" on any of those major services, lube locks and hinges properly, etc.... they just do a quick glance over, replace stuff and ship the car!

fakkkk mine has been seized up for about a year now. I pulled the trunk cover and tried all kinds of sprays and it never released. F it. But if you come up with a solution post it up. I wonder how much it costs to have it changed?

it's not really that expensive
but the funny thing is, if they replace ONLY the trunk key cylinder, you'll have 2 different keys for your car... it will NOT match the ignition or door handle
you will have to change the entire lock set to get them to match... and to top it off, you'll have to program the new keys too

Is there a possibility of having the lock changed to match the key? I had that done with a glove box lock once.

Everyone mentioned that one should lube the lock, but with what product and how? Can someone recommend something so others can prevent this from happening.

I use graphite de-icer in the locks. Keeps them lubed and from icing up.

^^^They tried this when i took the car in to have it looked at and it didn't work.
I have some good news though, i spoke to them afterward and they did get approval to fix this covered under my extended warranty. The only issue is that they will be replacing the lock and will give me an extra set of keys for the trunk lock, meaning i will have to carry around 2 keys with me instead of just the one that did everything.

UPDATE: I brought my car in and in 30mins they replaced the trunk lock and now it works fine but it does have a new key to go with it, which looks exactly like my original key. The whole thing was covered under my extended warranty.

Did you ask to see if the lock could have been re-keyed to match the old key?

they should've rekeyed the new trunk lock cylinder to match your original key... take it back and tell them as that should've been covered under warranty as well.

call in a locksmith....when my trunk lock cylinder broke, the new one was rekeyed to match my original key. This work was done at Avante and covered under warranty at the time.
