Hey guys, I just bought the Tuneflex Ipod holder for my 2010 M3. But I want remove the center silver panels where the shifter is, so that I can run the wire from the 12v plug to the aux in port under the panels.
Has anyone taken out that panel yet? or have any kind of instructions on how to do it?
Thankks.

Yeah... pull it from the arm rest part and it just lifts.
And putting it back is just pushing it back in.

Alrite, went out and tried it. But kinda failed. I was super close to getting the shifter panel off, however theres something holding the ashtray back and it just wont wont out. I tried to look behind it but I saw nothing that could be holding it. Heres some pics anyway:

Cupholder part was easy, just on clips like krazy said.

Lift that tab up, then keep lifting (carefully) and it will release the other clips.

Thats as far as I could get the panel out, something is holding it right at the top of the panel and I have no idea what it could be.

Guys,
I have a 2010 GX hatch manual. I fabricated my own cell phone base/holder.
I installed it in the gap between the center tunnel sidewall and that silver trim piece surrounding the shifter. I will post pics latter.
However the point is that I had to remove the silver trim completely. I can tell you that there are NO screws holding it. The upper part where the ashtray is also lifts up. I do not think there is a difference between your automatic and my manual bur of course there is always a possibility. I did the install a week ago, but if you gents need me to lift that part again and describe the clips around the ashtray I can do it. I have no camera on me at work though.

Firstly, you need to put it into drive and remove the shifter knob by unscrewing it. Then you need to know that the silver piece wedges itslef into place as well as snap in. Soo.. you need to use a little more force than the black piece. Warning there is a wire on the drivers side that illuminates the shifter column and it is kinda short so don't pull it to hard.
You can twist and pull this light out or disconnect the silver from the black. There are a few clips around the shifter piece holding it into the silver piece. Start at the cup holder side and work forward.

Oh, well... I tried.
Didn't realize a 2010 center console would be that much different.

im a car newbie, so bear with me. would disconnecting the batter affect any of the system in the car? meaning anything electronic? that still uses the battery even when the car is off?

Car *MIGHT* idle a bit rough when you reconnect the battery. Doesn't always happens, but sometimes it does. It will go away after a bit and isn't a big worry.
EDIT: Just saw date...my bad.

Not sure if you figured it out yet but here's a little guide for you. Things may be different for an automatic, I'm not sure.
Don't wrench hard on anything, just use a sensible amount of force and lots of wiggling for each panel. It's extremely easy and you won't break anything, I guarantee it.
Start by lifting the left side of the cupholder. It should pop out, then pop the right side out and remove the panel:

http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt42/trendmonster/Forums/console/IMAG0012.jpg
Start at the bottom of the silver piece and sort of spread out the black side walls where the first panel was to make things easier:

Unscrew your shifter knob and lift off:

Disconnect wires, remembering where they go of couse:

Done!

I know this is old but seriously, mazda told me it would cost a ton to get a new shift boot installed because of the centre console removal! amazing, doing it soon! hahahaa thanks
same problem dude
cant lift up the whole thing seems like something is holding it back
i am guessing this may be for the automatic model only

I actually just read on another how-to guide done by a guy with an automatic, that the Black piece surrounding the shifter is not to be removed. It is clipped into the silver piece that you are trying to remove. So make sure that they are separated. This sounds like what is holding you back.
edit- Oh and you do need to be in N for the removal. If it's in P it wont come out.

push the button to roll windows down...then when it's fully down, push the button and roll the windows up, continue holding for 3 seconds.
