Hey guys, I've got a 2005 GT sport, 5 speed. When I first got the car I found that the parking brake didn't hold it so I adjusted the cable to the point when it got better. I then found it was only actuating the passenger side caliper, while the cable was not pulling on the driver side. I think the cable is probably seized on the driver's side as the cable tension is maxed out and there is still no movement.
Does anyone know what is involved in replacing the cable? I'd prefer to do it myself but would like to know what I'm getting into. I've searched but haven't found anybody who has actually changed thiers
Thanks,
Adam

If it's just the one caliper that is moving you could have more than just the parking brake to worry about. It could be the cable but you could also have a seized rear caliper to worry about. When you get out back to check it out inspect the calipers and see if there is difference in wear from left to right caliper and if there is any sign of gunk on the caliper slider pins, you may have to take the caliper apart clean and refurbish it or just buy a new caliper. The slider pins should be greased every time you change your pads and or at when you do your 24k and 48k and so on services. We all know that sometimes mechanics can be lazy, especially those that are at those quick oil and brake change places that they advertise on tv.

Thanks for the tips guys. The pad wear is even all the way around and I have already cleaned and greased the sliders. When I manually actuate the arm which the parking brake cable pulls, the caliper piston operates as it should. I think the problem is that the cable is eithe broken somewhere or has seized into its housing.

Sounds like the cable (common failure)...when you go to buy the cable the package will have all three cables in it (if you buy it at Mazda). They changed the designe of the cables to help reduce corrosion in the cables. I think the labour time is somewhere between 1.1-1.5 hrs to replace all three.
p.s. you'll have to raise the care up enough to get under it and remove a lot of stuff if your doing it yourself.

yeah, could also be that the cable is so stretched that it's at the end of it's adjustment. either way requires replacing.

i had this problem, my hand brake cable was seezed so i bought one from mazda dealer, cause my mechanic said there is no aftermarket ones, and i used my username there and got 10% off which was really nice, so i think it came down to like 100 or so. and i took it to my mechanic and helped him put it on which was another 40 box since i helped him. its kind of a hastle if u dont have a lift jack that takes it in the air. and since then its been perfect
