So lately I've been noticing that more and more ppl at the gym are "downing" chocolate milk post workout, and I always wondered why?

For example, Michael Phelps does it, and a few months ago I witnessed a guy in my anatomy class "downing" a 1 liter carton of chocolate milk and I thought to my self... "that guy is insane!", then recently one of my friends started drinking 1 liter cartons of chocolate milk after workouts too.

So I asked myself "what is so great about chocolate milk?, why does it help athletic performance?" So as you may know milk is high in protein (51 or more amino acids bounded by peptide bonds=protein AHH PHYS EXAM) which is important for EVERY physiological process in the human body, including the growth of muscle fibers. But what else makes this beverage so special!

After some "googling' I came across an article, and apparently... "The findings suggest that chocolate milk has an optimal ratio of carbohydrates to protein to help refuel tired muscles, researcher Joel M. Stager, PhD, Indiana University kinesiology professor, tells WebMD." and also some sugars (monosacchrides and disacchrides LOL) in the milk may be better absorbed in the gut than those in the Sport drinks." allowing for faster muscle recovery times.

Also chocolate milk is cheap! On the streets or the cafeteria at York it sells for $3.75/L. Compared to 3 dollar/500ml sports drinks and expensive protein powder it is obvious that chocolate milk is the better choice.

So in conclusion..
1) It's cheap
2) Faster recovery times
3) High in minerals and vitamins that our body needs anyways.

Therefore, if you engage in high levels of physical activity whether it be working out, or playing ball you should drink low fat chocolate milk

So kids... drink your chocolate milk!
now I should stop procrastinating and go back to studying...

(note: the research was funded by the dairy nutrition foundation so it might be a bit biased... LOL)

plus the chocolate also has antioxidants in it, and it helps the taste over regular milk

You forgot #5.

Marketing works...and that P.T. Barnum was 100% correct.

Yes, I agree that it is somewhat fishy that this research was funded by the dairy industry but with that said I don't think it is a marketing hoax lol, I can say from my personal experience that I have seen improvements in recovery times after my workouts from drinking chocolate milk, but it's good that you're being skeptical.
House Hippo FTW

but with that said I should probably mention that some research have found that protein in dairy products have been linked to colon cancer.... but w/e just take a high fiber diet to balance it out... LOL

I hope you dont think 1% chocolate milk is less fattening than regular 2%... If so, you are forgetting the huge amount of sugar in 1% chocolate milk..

however i think it would be fine after a workout

12 grams per 250ml i believe... LOL 48 grams in a liter and about 400-500 calories... but yeah after a workout it should be fine

It is pretty widely accepted in the ranks of pro cycling that chocolate milk is one of the best drinks not only post ride but also while racing...as long as you can keep it down. The other problem is keeping it fresh in the bottle while riding. When guys pick up their musettes during a race you can see many of them have chocolate milk inside. I have been using chocolate milk as my mid ride treat for years...as long as there is a convenience store somewhere along the route...and prefer it to any kind of sports drink.
