Toughened for Serious Traffic Offences

Came across this news - Effective January 1, 2010, penalties for the following offences will increase:

1. failure to stop at a red light - fine increases from $500 to $1,000

2. failure to wear a seat belt and failure to ensure passengers under 16 are properly secured - fine increases from $500 to $1,000

3. careless driving and failure to remain at the scene of a collision - fine increases from $1,000 to $2,000

4. drivers who do not pull over and stop for emergency vehicles or who follow fire vehicles too closely:

1st offence - maximum fine increases from 500 to $2000, in addition 3 demerit points + a possible two-year license suspension - up from the current maximum penalty of a $500 fine.

subsequent offences (within five years) : maximum fine increases from $500 to $4,000, three demerit points, a two-year driver's license suspension and a six-month prison sentence

It's that time of the year, please don't drink and drive. Drive safely and think someone share the road with you. Thanks.

Why would you want them to jack it up? Although these offenders should be punished, I dont see how the government is really doing anything to help reduce the number of these incidences. Yes they say these scare tactics will help reduce these incidents and promote safety on the road but in the end of the day, they just want more money.

The government is stealing money now. They are just finding any route they can to get more money from us tax payers. Although I doubt I will ever violate any of the things mentioned above, I still feel that the government is a thief. They are trying with the HST as well. THIEFS I TELL YOU

I agree 100% with soyabean. The government has mismanaged their budgets and run up a stupid defecit. They are paying the banks interest on it. They are desperate for money and are willing to resort to any level to get it including taxing the working man to death and insane fines under the guise of safety.

Upping these fines is a slippery slope. It may not affect you now, but when does it stop? When it affects you? For those that wish these fines on others, karma is a bitch and you will get yours!

I doubt that the government could get a lot of $ to help the government with their deficit, don't think they can get a lot of money. How often do these offenses occur and if they do how many drivers are caught. . But I could be wrong.

I sometimes wish people like you got wrongly accused/charged and then had to pay the max fine. I wonder if your thoughts would change after something like that happened.
