View Full Version : Need new Fuse Block?????

Hey guys,
So the wipers on my 2004 GT (137k) suddenly die. I take it to the dealership and lo and behold, this is what their diagnosis reads (it is all caps so I will reproduce it here in its original form):
TESTED WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT FOR POWER, RE & RE COWLING TO TEST WIPER MOTOR, MOTOR WOULD NOT RUN WITH POWER APPLIED, FURTHER TEST CIRCUIT. FOUND NO POWER COMING FROM PJB CONNECTOR, INTERNAL FAULT REQUIRES FUSE BLOCK $908.06 PLUS LABOUR & TAX.
I am very confused! Where exactly is the fuse block and why does it cost $908??? If it is an electrical part, what are the odds of it failing? Has anyone experienced this before?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Merry Christmas!

Also, it's not just a "fuse block" -- it's the cars computer. Controls everything except the engine management stuff.

Yup, it's the PJB.
Hmm... not sure if there are any '04's in the group, but there has been a spate of trashed 3's on the board lately... and I *think* later versions of the PJB would work... PM McGuyver on that as he has some experience with mix'n'match PJBs...

I've seen PJBs go bad... not unusual, especially since FORD redesigned this thing a dozen times (and moved fuse locations too, so a new one won't match the diagram on the cover unless you changed that too)
you can go the junk yard route but you'd need the dealer to install it 99% of the time as it'll need to be reprogrammed to match your car's specs... I'd suggest getting one from an 08/09 if I can too

Hey guys,
Does anyone know what the cross-compatibility is for PJB's of different years/models?
I have a 2004 GT with the luxury options (leather). Which PJB's would be compatible with my electronics?
I've found a few salvage vehicles with PJBs but I don't know which ones will be compatible with mine...
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I pm'ed MacGyer but received no response...does anyone have his email/phone number?

Just a bit of clarification if you would McGuvyer:
PJBs from 2004-2006 are inter-exchangeable, as are 2007-2009?
Therefore I can't use a 2007-2009 PJB, but I can use 2004-2006?
And trim level is irrelevant? Does installation require reprogramming or can I just pop it in myself?
Thanks again for your help.

sorry it was late and i was lazy lol.
You got it right though. The only thing i am unsure of though is if you get a PJB from a sedan will it be different from a hatch. The reason i say this is because the hatch has the rear wiper. From my understanding it shouldnt make a difference because the fuses are all the same across the board. If you have a car with auto wipers and lights make sure to get a pjb with those functions in it. and if you do not have those options make sure you do not get one that has those features. The lights will work properly BUT your low stage wipers will not work because it is looking for the rain sensor which will not be present. As far as i know it will be direct plug and play as after the PJB is configured for your car the dealer cannot reconfigure them. I know this because of my previous 3

PJBs cannot be backdated but can be updated within the same generation car
in otherwords, if you have a 2004 BK, you can install a 2009 BK PJB in the 2004, but not the other way around... there is no difference between sedan and hatchback.... it all has to be programmed when you have it installed by the dealer!
like I said already, you'd want the newest PJB you can get

This is incorect I have tried this enough to know. 04-06 the pjbs work I had an 04 and put a PJB in that was PREPROGRAMMED from a crashed car from an 08 and it was a good condition pjb the power locks stopped working and another feature stopped working. I also had an 05 where we put a mazdaspeed box in and again all the power locks stopped working. I took a pjb from my friends 07 and put it in my 05 and the locks stopped working. This is not a coincidence

ok, you were right...
the 04-06 PJBs are the "same", and the 07-09 are different
but you still cannot use an older PJB in a newer car (like an 04 in an 06, or 07 in an 09... DEFINITELY not an 04 in an 09)
anyway, the idea is still the same regardless... you'd want the latest PJB you can put in :)
oh and you can't use a USDM PJB... there's a difference between having DRLs and not

Thanks for the clarification guys!
Just to recap:
I can install a PJB from an 04-06 but I have to make sure it has auto lights/wipers since mine has them as well.
In addition, I can go ahead and install it myself without needing it reprogrammed by the dealer?
Is this correct?

If the PJB is bulled from a identical speeded 04-06 then no you won't need to reprogram.
If you buy it brand new (not likely) it has to be programmed.

Here is my recommendation, don't buy a used PJB from the scrap yard unless you can get it for really cheap.
How do I know? I bought one back in summer of this year after my orignal PJB fubared (headlights stayed on constantly).
As of Dec 29th, 2009, my 2nd "Used" PJB is fubared. Wipers do not work, emergency brake light lit up on dash eventhough the brake is down, and worse of all...I cannot ****EN SIGNAL. Thats right...the turn signals don't work at all.
Took the car to Jimmy @ Street Performance and he confirmed my worse nightmare...
**** it, I ordered a brand new PJB from Joe/Mazda of Toronto...at least it comes with 1 year/20,000km standard warranty.
After I get over it, I will most likely be selling my car come summer time. Thats if it lasts that long...

yup, as I said earlier, the PJB has been redesigned many times and so getting a junk yard unit usually results in an older fault prone design :)

And the new pjb was 1300?

That is true but if you get lucky then its not so bad. i got one out of a scrapper for my last car and it was going strong until i wrote off the car. I only changed my original one because I added on auto lights and wipers which apparently the dealer couldnt program in

it's not a matter of an "on/off" switch or any sort of configurable options when you program the PJB... you basically get the factory hex values and punch them in to their scan tool and it programs the PJB that way.... so while it maybe possible to reprogram the PJB with the correct hex values, it's practically impossible to do so because you'd need to talk to a mazda engineer to know what to change and where to change it! :)
hence why your dealer couldn't do it

Bought a new PJB (revision "J") which Joe said was the latest and greatest. Had the new PJB reprogrammed with my car at Mazda of Toronto. Car electronic functions are working again. Thanks again to Joe for all the help in tough times.
New PJBs must be programmed by Mazda dealership for everything to work.
The only positive I see out of this is, buying a new part comes with a 1 Year/20,000km warranty. I should have bought a new one from the start.

keep in mind your fuse locations are now different... you may want to consider either buying a new cover or relabeling it (should be using the 07-09 fuse locations IIRC)

You mean for the fuse box in the engine bay?

uhh why would the PJB have anything to do with that?
your new PJB has fuses don't it?
the PJB cover has a fuse diagram on it... I bet you never noticed that!

The pjb has numbers written along the bottom of each fuse and as far as i know they havent changed them from year to year. I havent seen anything on them that states what each fuse is. Is that what you are talking about TheMAN?

Of course not, I'm not that much of a loser nor do I work for Mazda. So I wouldn't know.
I have a nice collection of PJBs in the basement. I have two defective CDN models and one from a US MS3 (works 100%...just not for CDN models...).
Its quite an expensive collection.

I know they changed the a couple of fuse locations after 06 in the PJB
that black cover you pull off to get to the PJB is where the diagram is

If you don't mind paying a Mazda dealership 1 to 2 hours of labour every 6 months (at an average rate of $100+/hour) to program it, then go ahead.
I went the "used" route earlier this year and in the end, nothing beats a brand new part with warranty and piece of mind.
Too old to blow my Saturdays servicing my Mazda at the dealership. :)
