The shopping centre hopes to appeal to China's women drivers

A shopping centre in China's Hebei province has built a car park with wider spaces that it says is designed especially to suit women drivers.

The women-only car park in Shijiazhuang city is also painted in pink and light purple to appeal to female tastes.

Official Wang Zheng told AFP news agency the car park was meant to cater to women's "strong sense of colour and different sense of distance".

The parking bays are one metre (3ft) wider than normal spaces, he said.

The Wanxiang-Tiancheng shopping centre had also "installed signs and security monitoring equipment that corresponded more to women's needs", he said.

The Global Times website says female parking attendants have been trained to help guide women drivers into their parking spaces. The bays also have extra lighting.

Driving in China is a dangerous activity, with more than 200 deaths in road accidents each day last year, AFP reports, citing police statistics.

You'll realize why when you drive in china. I would say 80% of the population are still on bicycles, motor-scooters and motorcycles. There are 3wheeled trucks. Almost everyone doesn't follow the rules of the road.

^ actually that's not too bad. Needed a quick distraction at work so I quickly did some google mashing.

Given that China's population is 1.3BN and Canada's population is ~34MM and applying the latest metrics I could find from StatsCan in 2006... if we multiply our roughly 8 deaths per day by a magnitude of 38x we get 304 deaths per year! However, that is not a fair assessment as I was too lazy to figure out how many cars are on the road in China.

I'm not surprised tho... most women can't park...

But lets not just hate on women... Most ppl in Scarboro can't park either... and Markham is even worse... :chuckle

basically anyone outside of china or that ethnicity are all of "this is an insult" mentality.

all the comments from chinese people were stuff like "so good! i am happy! i need help!" -- basically, let's not get better but make everything dumber to accommodate.

This is a brilliant idea and should be shadowed by other countries like Hong Kong where public car parks could only fit a mini or smart car in general. Shopping with ease of parking would certainly be great news to all women drivers. An allocation of an area for women drivers from an existing car park would certainly drive the business on the said shopping mall.

What a relief this would be for me! I DO need extra space when
parking, despite how unpopular this might make me with feminists
worldwide. I can park anywhere, but I don't like the anxiety of using
cramped spaces and any help such as better lighting, helpful
attendants or more space would be warmly welcomed. Sadly the reality
is it will never happen in HK where space is tight at the best of
times, but good for them in China. How fun to think they have actually
come up with this idea.

The spaces are a Metre wider... jesus. I thought this was a joke till I read the column... and I realized... they should have this in more then just China. Guys won't park straight... we will take up like 3 spaces to not have our cars hit haha. Or we are just bored and lazy and do it anyhow.
