View Full Version : Tirerack
Anyone ever purchase tires from Tirerack? How badly will I get dinged by customs? Anyone know if they use UPS for their shipments?

they use UPS and all the brokerage, duty and taxes are calculated on their site in the final price. you don't pay a cent more when UPS drops it off at your place.

Majestic pretty much said it all.
I did not incur any other charges and was very happy with the winter setup for my speed3 I ordered from them. If you order when our dollar is high - their prices can sometimes be hard to beat.
I just bought my tires from tire rack in October
You pay everything up front..which means their is no extras..At check out they will list grand total and at the bottom it broke down on how much you paying for what.
I saved $250 by buying my tires from tirerack

I bought my rims from Tirerack. Yea you ask them for prices right to your door which is nice. When they came, one was a bit scratched on the inside so I thought about getting it replaced. They said they'd do it no charge but when I got my tires on it, the scratch was hidden. Good customer service and prices.

Bought my winters from Tirerack, but picked them up (had them shipped to an installer, saved about $60 on shipping cost). Declared at border, only charged tax (had called border services earlier, and 7% duty was applicable but not applied). Not the same situation as the OP, but I figure I'd point this out for those close to the border, or possibly planning a trip.

As an option, and to support our sponsors, when the dollar was even with US, I got a quote from Tirerack, shipped to my door and then factored in $20-25 per wheel to have them installed. I went to Tires23.com and their price for the same tires, icluding tax, mount and balance was the same as Tirerack plus local mount/balance exactly, so I dealt locally with them!

It all depends what tires you buy and if their on sale..i bought BFGoodrich G-force 225/45/17 for $550 then i paid $60 to have them installed grand total was $610..compared to $850 everyone wanted localy

They have deals better than local for some items. Look around first and compare before you empty your wallet.
What tires you looking at, and whats your budget? Maybe we can help you out.
I'm considering 4 sets of tires:
Michelin X-Ice Xi2's ($146each)
Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22's ($136each)
Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero's ($185each)
Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60's ($175each)
They're listed in my preferred order. All tires are 215/45/18 sizes. Prices are in USD.

On rims?
That's just the price of the tires, before shipping ($55) and before taxes (8%). I then have to get them mounted. So about $191 per tire, if I went with the X-Ice...
Edit: I should add that the X-Ice has the lowest speed rating of all the tires. I don't know if that matters much on winter tires, but I assume it's more than just speed (ie: handling) that's taken into consideration. Or can I safely ignore speed ratings on winter tires?

Break it down and see what your saving:
Locally - $1092.42 out the door
TireRack - $890.67 USD = approx $945 (assuming the CC giving you a solid exchange)
I have heard of some customers now getting charged the Ontario Tire Stewardship fee when bringing in tires, so tack on almost $25. Not to mention install at most shops is $60-100. Bringing the total to $1030-$1070.
Is it worth your time and effort to save $20-60 at most? How difficult will warranty be? Additional labour costs if you need warranty etc?

Ship it stateside and pick it up. much cheaper. I did a hypothetical check on some Hankook Evo V12- ~560 shipped to US address vs. ~830 shipped to Ontario
Here is a an example i used my address but you get the idea this is for the 215/45R18 XL Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22

I went down to the states to do some shopping AND purchase my tires. I went to Tire Rack: http://www.buffalonytires.com
Their prices are honestly unbeatable. Their service and customer relation is amazing. I brought up my concern regarding Custom fee. So what Dan (the guy running Tire Rack) did was he wrote me an invoice cheaper than what I actually paid. So, if I needed to pay tax, it would be less.
At the border, the officer asked how much we (went with my girlfriend) had spent. He wouldn't believe how cheap the tires were (keep in mind, we also bought stuff from the outlet malls). He asked for an invoice and to his (and my) surprise, Dan had wrote that the tires I had purchased are second hand tires! The officer simply let us through EVEN THOUGH we had spent over $500 bucks on a one day trip to buffalo!
Below are pictures of their store.

Dan and Dan Jr. are not affiliated with Tire Rack in any way. Their prices, however, are very close to what Tire Rack lists.
