Is it just me or do the ABS kick in way to early and for no reason?

mby its cuz im driving stuck and am still downshifting but when breaking it feels like i never lose control or any slipping but ABS kick in as soon as i touch down on the breaks dosnt even have to be pushing down that hard!

i was considering removing the fuse for ABS

anyone else?

The ABS works fine throughout the year on my 2006.
Its pretty slippery in the Toronto area these few days, even though visibly it might not look like it.
Heads up: stopping without ABS on snow/ice requires a different stopping techniques.

ABS is really annoying in winter...makes your stopping distances MUCH MUCH worse.

Not much you can do about it. My old car didn't have working ABS for the last couple years I owned it...I didn't want to have it fixed just for this reason.

I have the same experience yesterday. I drive an auto 2.0 sedan, i wasn't even trying to push down the break and the ABS kicked in and scare the **** out of me.

nothing is wrong with your cars, they are just light cars with ABS that probably works better than the last beater you had, or perhaps your last car didn't even have ABS. It's slippery out there fellas!

"Better" meaning how they designed it to work...I just wish it was magic enough to know the seasons....dial it back in winter LOL

Sure you have longer stopping distances but the one time you require a brake and steer to void situation, you'll be happy your ABS was working.

Are you using winter tires? I have them on and I don't remember of my ABS kicking in at all in normal driving situations.

I have brand new Gislaved Norfrost 5's

I do live in barrie and drive to Collingwood for snowboarding a lot, so I am often driving in retarded storms.

The ABS does not help you brake and steer in the winter, your e brake, and using no brakes at all with MODERATE turning of your steering wheel will get you to turn on snow.

ABS sucks in winter, no matter what LOL

i have a 2005 gs and i dont even see a point to having abs in my car.....the other day i went right through a stop sign, good thing nobody was coming. it wasnt even snowing that day and i came up to the stop sign doing 40... tryed to brake and it sounds like somebody smashing two rocks together down there....:flaming

lol ya it doesnt even feel like its stopping just warning ppl ur about to hit them by smashing rocks togtether

im going to pull the fuse and pump my breaks like i normally do myself but now i wont have that stupid crunching sound/feeling

also i have basically new winter tires on ( brand new used last winter, hardly drove tho) the car and they are pretty good tires i must say

Just remember it doesn't snow all year. =) Like Gizzmo said, that one time you need it, you'll be happy you have it. Even in the winter ABS can save you, sure, you're very likely to go into a sideways slide on icy surfaces if you need to brake and avoid, but you'll have that problem without ABS (It would be worse). And the method for getting you out of that situation still applies even if you have ABS :)

My ABS comes on very, very rarely. I step on the brakes lightly and ease into them until I stop. Having better tires helps big time... In fact, if ABS is kicking in that soon, assuming nothing else is wrong, it's most likely your tires.

PS: You should buy my W300's :chuckle

those with problem, maybe its your tires, brake fluid (i would check that first) or pads?
I agree with vehicles without ABS have more control on ice the with ABS. However on dry pavement both are equal, but requires different technique of braking.

ABS= great for dry and wet weather brake and steering.

ABS= mostly useless and counterproductive in snow and ice. Stopping distances are longer and you cannot brake and steer with any effective control when you are still sliding. ABS causes more accidents in winter now because of a false sense of security it provides and too many people believe it will work in winter and they keep their damn foot solidly on the brake pedal and just plow straight forward and hit whatever is in their path. Old style brake pumping and acceleration modulation with the possible use of the handbrake is a far more effective method of trying to maintain handling, stopping distances and steering in snow and ice.

This aside, your ABS should not be kicking in so easily if you are on new winter tires and driving at a reasonable speed for the conditions. There is either something mechanically wrong, or you are driving way too fast for the road conditions and you have a heavy foot on the brake pedal and are pressing too hard which kicks in the ABS. On good winter tires, it is actually not easy to kick in the ABS in all but the worst conditions unless you press the pedal down hard and quick or are driving way too fast and trying to stop way too quickly.

im not driving to fast i can make my abs kick in at pretty much any speed i can do it on demand ...

makes me rage so hard

Looks like you're taking a dump. No wonder you're applying too much force to the pedals and causing the ABS to engage. It's not easy to take a dump and brake at the same time.

:chuckle I would assume that to be true. Never tried it myself.

But in all honesty, I have to agree. If it's coming on that early, either you aren't driving appropriate to the conditions or there is a technical issue somewhere. I've lightly had ABS come on a few times when coming home from work...but that is usually due to hitting a certain section of road while trying to break before a light. It will happen even in the summer if I'm trying to break hard enough. Other than that, never had it kick in on the 3 and only a couple times on my old Camry.

I have the Mazda 3 sedan 2010, I have the same problem with brand new Michelin X-Ice2 tires driving for the conditions in Caledon. My corolla and civic have abs and the abs does not kick in as easily or early. Try going down a hill w/ 2cm of snow, abs on the mazda 3 wont even engage the brakes only pulses straight through the stop sign at the bottom going 50km/h. The ABS fuse is also used for the power steering so you can't remove it. Will not buy Mazda again because of this huge safety concern that is in denial.

Funny how every post complaining about this problem is flooded with "it's your tires" "going too fast for conditions" "it's your braking style" ...
