hey guys here the problem,

Car: 2005 Mazda 3 2.3
km: 94000
power warrenty: done june 2010

For the past few months (could have been longer) i have been noticing a substantial amount of oil being burnt, oil is pretty black too and the whole nine yards. So i bring it into the dealership and from the get go im sure that were just beating around the bush because the guy told me mazda has a spec on how much oil there motors CAN burn, i thought motors arent naturally supposed to burn oil? I could be wrong but it just didnt make sense to me so the I debated with him on that subject he continued to tell me the same thing quoting that his buddy has a performance shop in toronto and he knows. Whatever just frustrating hearing crap like that when ive done some research into it. So they tell me to come in every 1000 kms to check oil levels. The supposed mazda spec was that these motors can burn up to a litre? lol Anyways, the first call of action was to replace the PCV valve (20 dollar valve, with labour 300$ roughly), they tell me i have to get it done there or else they cant prove that the mechanic put it in correctly, but i figured if 300$ is going to fix my problem so be it. So i got it replaced they say come back in 1500kms to check oil, when i went back the dip stick was nearly dry just a little oil at the bottom of it. By now this is probably my 10th time at the dealership in the past month and a half. Now the guys comes to me and says, well make your car stock and come back, the debating started again, it went from get it totally stock to you just need to take off your intake because all other upgrades dont affect the motor burning oil. He told me that when the intake is off come back and there going to do an oil change and monitor it again every 1000 kms. Then if theres something wrong with the motor I will have to sign a "tear down" sheet so they can open the head and try and find the problem, he said just to check it could be a few hundred dollars and if they dont find anything IM paying for that but if they do find something it SHOULD be covered under warranty. I feel like there running me in circles does this sound like the correct procedure of things to do, i havent been through a problem like this with a vehicle?

And is there anyone in the burlington area i could throw some cash too take out my intake and put in the factory air box? mazda was going to charge me 250 :S

thanks

WTF $300 to replace the PCV vlave? and only a few hundred to open the top half of the engine. They won't probably find anything wrong that is Mazda's fault. I have a 2005 2.3 and it doesn't burn an ounce. Oil level at time of oil change is the same as the time I changed it 3 to 4 months ago and after 4000KM on average, and I did the oil filter conversion at my first oil change 5 years ago. Good luck, if Mazda won't replace-fix the engine which I am sure they will try and do sell it or trade it in on another brand. Has the dealer asked for oil change records?

these motors DO burn oil to an extent when running 5W20 oil... I've seen lots of higher mileage MZR motors do that... but I've only seen normal consumption only up to half a quart or a tad more per 5000km... mine runs 0W30 synthetic and not a single drop gets burnt... and it gets 16000km oil changes

you should try taking your car to another (better) dealer and see what they say... why deal with a dealer you're not happy with?

DL motorsports on the north service rd in burlington is by far the very best performance shop anywhere IMO, see them about swapping your parts. The very best dealership to try talking to is Select mazda,go see them. There's no harm in talking to them right?. They have far exceeded any expectations I ever had in a dealership.

I say follow the others advice of taking it to a different dealer or even a local mechanic. You have an 05 so I believe your warranty is up (or about to be up) anyways right?

As for taking out the intake, I'm on reading week starting this weekend, and can give you a hand taking it out. I am in Guelph though.

thanks guys i think im going to call DL motor sports on monday hopfully they dont charge over 100 bucks for an intake swap (jimmy did it for 20 bucks!!!). I figured alot of motors have the potential to burn a little bit over a larger length of time, as for the dealership i think im going to stay with them, i think its inevitable to find a dealer that will replace my motor with and intake on it, i guess we'll see what happens ill keep you posted. I have another question, since this is my first car i decided to ask my dad for some adive on it and he told me to get the mazda canada number from them so he could just get a general idea of what is to happen (he hates talking to guys at the service desk). Last time i was in there i asked the guy is there a number for mazda canada, and he told me he cant give it to me because they are the direct representatives, after a few minutes of debating it basically came down to its a secret and there the only ones allowed to call. I thought that was bull**** but i couldnt argue with him much as i just dont know how stuff is run in these dealerships!!

To tiring to read that entire post. Why not use paragraphs?
Anyway, motors use oil. All motors do. Some need to be topped up between changes and others do not.
Oil gets black normally and that's not a problem unless its fuel contaminated.
Here is another thought. K&N filters and the like DO NOT filter near as good as a stock paper filter. Ford diesels are denied any claim with an aftermarket intake. If your motor is eating grit it will start with oil getting by the scraper rings as they wear.
I've been a mechanic for 20 years and when I see a modded car with no records it gets tricky for warranty.

why haven't you looked through your owner's manuals for the phone number? or if it's not there, why didn't you just simply go to mazda.ca and look? you don't need to ask anyone for it and you don't have to fight anyone for it... customer service phone numbers are found everywhere for anything... there's nothing challenging about doing this... getting a phone number isn't doing algebra

and if all else fails, there's always 411

Yes that is Mazda's standard procedure. It is like pulling teeth to get them to stand behind their products or give good customer service.
Calling Mazda Canada yourself will like likely get you nowhere, they will just send you back to the dealership. They are more useless than the dealerships and have negative customer service. Some bozo will answer the phone there who knows nothing and cares about less. The bozo will then say something like 'somebody will get back to you' or 'they will review things with the appropriate people', but will have nothing to tell you themselves and won't be able to transfer you to anybody of use. No matter what they tell you, you will be forgotten about and ignored either from complete incompetence, and/or on purpose.
The best response I've gotten from Mazda Canada was using their website contact form. They didn't help me get anything fixed, but at least replied and tried to explained what their policy was.

i just thought i was funny that they had to keep it a secret, it was spur of the moment question and that was his answer...
