View Full Version : GAS ISSUE!
Hey guys, just bought my first mazda, and it happens to be a 2008 mazda speed 3, only 13000km. Anyways I dont seem to be getting much mileage on my car. I read people getting 600 km per tank on their speed 3 where I see myself only getting about 400 if im lucky on a full tank, I would even say less to be honest. I do a lot of highway driving and some city driving but I do both within a day. With regards to how I drive, I baby it. I chift at 3000 rpm, rarely will I even shift at 4000 even on hwy. Anyways does anyone have any advice as to why it may be guzzling gas? Thank you all in advance!

In the winter you're bound to have less mileage due to the use of heaters and all that crap.
But not shifting past 3k? You have a speeeeeeed! Let errrr rippp

Don't mind Justin. He likes to rip his car. :P
I think you're still lucky to get 400. I remember getting 280 on my car. I even posted a pic in FB, I was so upset. That's mainly city driving though.
Your car is still pretty much new. That could be why.

in the winter i average about 400-450km for mostly city driving and about 500-550km for mostly highway driving... in the summer i'd get about +50km for both.. so you're not way off... especially not in the winter and if you have your heater on all the time/winter tires/ more idling etc... also maybe try shell or sunoco gas.. i always get a little better mileage with their gas as opposed to esso

Your mileage is just fine. I average between 350 to 450km max with my MS3 in 75% highway, but this said, I am in boost a lot and when I'm not, I'm in full vacuum. I assume you are averaging about 10.5L per 100km? If so, completely normal and don't worry about it.
Oh yah, and let her rip...

I get about 500km per tank with 90% city driving.

Car is still new and not broken in yet. It normally evens out around the 20K mark. The colder weather also has a factor.

when i saw the title of this thread i wasn't thinking about gasoline....
And even on my Mazda 3 gx I noticed increasing fuel economy after it was broken in. Really it's just an excuse to drive more ;)

When you fill up your tank, do you stop filling once the pump automatically shuts off?
I've found in my 2010 GS Sport (albeit a different car, but probably similar fuel tanks), I can get an extra 10 L or so when I keep filling it up after it shuts off. Sure, you end up spending more on gas, but I get an extra 150+ KM, therefore saving me trips to the pump.
Just a thought!

The pump stops when the tank is full. If your pump stops before the tank is full that means you weren't holding the nozzle in the right spot and the gas backed up a bit. Some cars are finicky.... Mini Coopers, for example, need to be filled EXTREMELY slowly or the pump will keep stopping every few seconds.

I find sometimes it's the pump itself too. Some just don't sit so well.
But hey, in my '69 Impala I don't know it's too full until it starts pouring out the tank (filled through where the rear license plate is)...I just know approximately how many L the tank holds and then I fill accordingly. =P

Can't figure out why when members post mileage they don't mention engine size, auto or manual? whats the point. Getting 600KM with MS3 I don't think is possible, I could be wrong...besides this thread is about the MS3
Thanks guys...lol

Bottom Line the Mazda 3 is not fuel efficient. I had an Infinity G37 (350hp) for a rental in the USA on vacation and it was averaging 9L/100KM.
I cant get mine under 9L even if I drive it like a grandma!
Their fuel ratings are far from the truth!

Mines an automatic 2010 Mazda3 GX, as I said in another post, I only did 367kms on a full tank since I got in from the dealer 1 1/2 weeks ago, and the gas sign just came on last night =[

Take the handbrake off. Lol.
I think most people get bad mileage due to driving style.
I see people speeding up to red lights. Fast starts. Etc.
Reading about hypermiling increase my mileage by 100kms.
150 if I really follow it. Hard to cost to red lights without people on your bumper.
