I purchased my mazda 3 a month and a half ago, and ever since i bought it i have heard a rattling coming from the rear end of the car. I thought at first my jack wasn't in the mount properly (as the sound sounds like a jack thats rattling around). I remounted the jack properly and still the noise was there. Today since it was nicer out i had my windows down and I can now tell the noise is coming for the exterior of the vehicle at the rear end. It is at the rear drivers side and sounds like a metal on metal rattle when going over a bump.

If anyone knows what could be causing this it would be great if i could solve this noise as it is EXTREMELY annoying.

Thanks,
Quinton

Check your rear end links and make sure your shocks are tightly mounted.

I've had a rattle also mine started 3 weeks ago so on friday morning i went to the dealer about it since my car still has bumper to bumper warranty and it took them 2 hours to figure out where it was coming from and it was my hinges for my trunk..they lubed it up and so far no more rattle. try that

i had this problem after i bought my car, turned out it was a my rear brakes, someone forgot to put the spring tensioner back on. So when i wasnt applying pressure the brake pads were boucing off the disc when i hit bumps. Something to check!

Alright. So i have checked the following: Endlinks (fine not loose), The strut's (mounted firmly), Rear breaks(Tensioner clip is on and breaks set up correctly), The trunk hinges (tight and greased).

So all those are out of the question, what else could it be. I did notice however the rubber bushings on the rear sway bar are worn down. Would this cause a rattling noise?

Any other ideas would be great!

sounds like you've got it pinned rear sway bar bushings are toast so it's rattling around. You could remove it and then have new bushings pressed in, or take the opportunity to visit one of our sponsers and get a new sway bar bushings included

sway bar bushings are NOT pressed in!
there are updated special parts from the dealer to fix this clunking problem also... they are not found in the normal parts catalogue and must be found in the TSB

competent parts guys such as raymond at avante, joe at MOT, or john at DWM should be able to figure that out

I have the same issue as well. Mine is a Hatch and I suspect the trunk covering that you can remove is the suspect. I tried to remove and put it back on to see if I did not put it on properly but I still get a rattle in the rear.
