hey guys ,
i think my wheel bearing is shot on my front passenger side ... cause when im driving it makes somewhat of a grinding noise ... or metal on metal ..and it gets worse when i turn right but not left. My question is...Is it hard to change it yourself ? cause mazda just qutoed me $500 to get it done and its like a $70 part.
When you get the new bearing does anyone know if its just a bearing .. or like a whole new assembly like new spindles ( where the wheel sits on ) and all that?
also.. how long would you guess i can drive on it? ..cause it just started to make noise 3 days ago.. and since its a long weekend i wont be able to get it into any shop or get the part so i can do it myself
Thanks guys

my civic costed me 160 for one side last year but if its making a knocking noise when you turn it could be your CV joint
mz3~Power
04-02-2010, 01:53 PM
its not a knocking noise its just a rubbing sound... like metal on metal

Bad bearings usually make a droning noise... gets louder over time, and the faster you drive the worse you sound.
Metal-on-metal sounds like something bent or stuck in a brake caliper/rotor/wheel etc.

So on the 2005 it should not be a complete Assembly, you can purchase bearing, clip and if required hub serperatly. If you just need a bearing and clip it would be under 100 in parts. It is not a do it yourself job as the bearing will need to be pressed out of the knuckle.

I got bearing replaced last year, 70 for parts (just a small OEM bearing) and 70 for labor total around 140, 500 .... no way....

if my right wheel bearing has just went ...does that mean my left one will be going shortly also ? or does one side wear more then the other?

Depends why it went.... usually it's because you hit a pothole/curb/slow moving critter... which means that just one one side is damaged.

what is the average life of a wheel bearing?? does anybody know lol ?

If the sound gets worse when you turn, than its not the wheel bearing, my bet is on CV joint. Like someone mentioned already bearing makes different sound and get louder with speed. Drive slowly around and make full turns both ways and if it gets worse then it's CV joints.
On my old Civic it only cost me $30 to replace a bearing :D (pressed in/out myself)

It gets louder as I speed up an also when I turn to the right .. But not to the left .

I had the front passenger bearing replaced a few months ago at the Mazda dealership here in Halifax where I got my car. They're estimate was about 500 to get it fixed through the dealer but because I had a third party warranty it only ended up costing me the deductible, which wasn't the greatest...

Do I need to bring the car too Jimmy to make sure its the bearing thats bad then get the parts then go back to Jimmy ?

You know I owned a Ford Taurus 94 long time ago, and NOT ONCE did a wheel bearing die. It had over 350 000 kms on it. As soon as I got my 02 Lancer, within 2 years, (50K) both sides went. I replaced them, within another 2 years they died again. What kills you is labour, as it's really hard to take a bearing out of the hub assembly. The bearing themselves are usually less than 100. If it's part of the hub assembly, then get a used knuckle or spindle on car-part.com..I might have one in my garage too. Cheers.

if you think its the wheel bearing get a mechanic to look at it to make sure. like i said the part with abs is $208 + tax and then $8 for this bolt you need and then jimmy charges $80 cash. his price is VERY good... i just recently had to replace the other side and i didnt go to jimmy because he is far away from me ... and i paid like $150 for labour.

alright,thanks!
Reason i ask was because im from london, if i want to go to jimmy 's id have to drive all the way there.
so what illprobably do is get a mechanic to check first, then buy the parts and next time i go to toronto ill stop by at jimmy's
did you get the part from toronto mazda with the tm3 discount?

my is 05. I got the parts for 75 and labour 70 dollars. I got it done in a shop around Mccowen and Sheppard. When I ordered the parts, the guy told me it was on special, 50% off, originally around 140 just for parts.

04 bearing's are a hub/bearing single unit press in, they are more expensive. Even with my Mazda cost there over 160$+

^ Your's are cheaper than the 04's
MY Bearings went a few months ago, Paid about 180 for both sides and 30 bucks to press the old ones out and the new ones in, and changed it in my drive, a hell of a lot of work, but i paid in the end just over 200 and a days worth of work.
Btw mine is an 04 with the ABS sensor

Your's are most likely late model 2004's, they switched the bearing styles's.
