Anyone thinking of/have plans for vacation during the summer ?? :chuckle

I just got approved for vacation for a week in May!!:huge smile
I was thinking of going to Vegas, but realized I was underage for the casino/drinking etc..
Then I thought of NY and Penn shopping, but I am in the mood for the beach.
SO, I thought the CARRIBEAN!!

Anyone wanna recommend any resorts/hotels they stayed at in the Carribean?
I'm unsure of which island I want to go to.

I'm planning on working/going to school in the summer...unless some long weekend trips to Boston/NYC include vacations. I dont call those vacations cause they short enough that I call them teasers.

I was hoping to go out to BC in June but work has pretty much put a cap on that. Not sure if I'll be going anywhere else.

Princesa: My girlfriend and I went to Barbados, end of April of last year. We stayed at the Almond Casuarina (http://www.almondresorts.com/Resorts/AlmondCasuarina/). It's an all inclusive resort and it's got its own section of beach front, plus several pools.
The people there were amazing, the view was flippin' incredible (I'll send you a link to some pics so you can see for yourself), and the food was fantastic. It's about 15-20 mins from the airport, and about that same amount of time to one of the major cities (with lots of duty free shopping).

I would -highly- recommend it. We got it for a great price, it was about $1000-$1200 each (that's hotel and airfare, plus transportation to/from the airport (in barbados)).

My friend stayed at the Bahia Principe in Punta Cana like pearlm3 mentioned. He said it was really good. It's a massive property that is connected by little trains or something.

Princesa: what's your budget?

I just got the first week of June off and I'm deciding what to do. May go to to England (have a friend there now) or just randomly venture around.

Then I have two weeks in September too. One I'm paying for my parents to go away and the other is (hopefully) party time for me. Again, no idea where to go. Maybe do a guided tour/ cruise with my best friend from University

I'm going with a special someone :P sooo I'm looking at $1000-$1500 for both of us, flight and hotel. We'll have extra $$ on the side for everything else, how much for spending money?

Since I'm going to Vegas for my birthday in September, we're both dishing out $5000 for both of us (flight, shopping, hotel and casino)

Going to Aruba in May at the Riu Palace which is suppose to be nice. Then later in the year off to Riviera Mayan or Jamaica. Just keep looking for deals on websites and you might catch a break. Like Aruba is usually $2000 a person and I got it for $500 so there are deals out there. I found it on itrvael2000!

Oou nice, where do I get the last minute deals anyways?
What are the websites I should go to?
Omg, if I get one for $500 each for the both of us, that's some major savings :D

TripAdvisor is your best friend.

Been to the Dominican Republic 3 times. Here are short reviews of each resort I stayed at.

Jan 2010 - Punta Cana Princess Resort
- Small quiet resort. 5 buildings for rooms but only 2 have oceanviews. Rooms were nice tho. Flatscreen TV, freshly stocked minibar everydayThe food was decent, Big buffet and lots of A la cartes (fondue, mexican, italian, steakhouse, seafood) but the best was that there were 2 more Princess resorts close by that you had access to. The pools, bars, and other a la cartes were all available to people from the PCP b/c it was one of the better ones. The best part was the pool and beach. Pool was relatively empty but beautiful with a nice swim up bar. Plus they have beds by the beach and the pool. yes, BEDS. you have to get up early to "reserve" them but why sleep lots when ur there? The beach is shared between a myriad of resorts and are all connected so its just a 32-36mile beachline. Beautiful. Again tho, its a quiet resort, the nightlife is at the other resorts. Punta Cana is the most touristy part of DR so the ppl there are really pushy.

Jan 2009 - Bahia Principe Cayacoa, Samana DR
- BEAUTIFUL resort. One of the nicest ive been to. Its on a hill overlooking the town (which is very tourist friendly) and has a Main resort with many Villas on the grounds. The food was fantastic and the pools were great. This resort was also relatively quiet but it depends on which group you go with i guess. There are 2 pools, the one i stayed at most was hidden in a cove by the villa where we were at. There are mini hottubs inside the pool. The town is very friendly and safe because Samana is just emerging as a tourist location. They even have a Scotiabank right there. I would highly suggest this place for the sheer beauty and relaxation BUT there are downfalls here. The beach is very small and shared with the locals. This makes it a little dangerous at night and verrry cramped. To get to the hardcore nightlife you have to venture into town late, which is no problem for me cuz Im a pretty big guy but for my gf and the other girls it was a little scary. Also, its a multi layer resort so if ur unfortunate enough to be at the bottom, u have about 100 stairs to climb to get to the main building. if ur lazy tho, u can just wait for the shuttle.

Feb 2007 - Bahia Principe San Juan, Puerto Plata
- BIG resort, it was hard to find my room when I was drunk. Good food with lots of selection. Nice pool and right on the beach. Its not as luxurious as some of the 5+ star places but its a nice vacay because everything is located ON the resort. Club, Casino, Bars, all on the resort so 2-5 min walking distance. A la cartes were great and the entertainment was great. It is more of a party location but localized because the entire resort is surrounded by rainforest. Fun place but be weary of some of the rooms. Ive heard of horror stories from the ppl I went with.

hope this helps

Going to the Riu Palace in Jamaica in June with a group of people and then Mazatlan with the gf in October (which I won from my work xmas party). My work is the sister company of Sunquest and there's a "friends & family" discount available for any that are interested. It's not the best discount out there but at least you know you'll be saving ~$100-$300 person depending where/when you go. PM for the discount info

I am covered with my benefits at work, so I never buy the extra insurance, it's a waste - unless you don't have benefits and are worried something will happen...
Also, when I went away I stayed at the Iberostar Puerto Plata - Dominican. Awesome resort!! and the food was INCREDIBLE.

That's unfortunate. I'll be spending all of July and August out in Victoria. I'll be sure to get some nice pictures for you.

I might actually be in Nanaimo at some point during the summer (potentially with my car as I spend my summers in Calgary)

Sweet place to be... most of Vancouver Island is a pretty sweet place to be.

It really all depends on the trip insurance, I personally have never purchased it as I tend to go on vacaton during the summer months so I know that there wouldn't be any trip interuptions such as flight delays or bad weather. SO if you're quite certain that you'll be able to go on the vacation you booked on that date than save yourself the couple of hundred dollars you would spend on the insurance.

Can anyone recommend a CHEAP resort? Lol.
With DR or Bahamas, I wouldnt mind staying in a 3 star or 4 star since I know I would be out most of the time anyways!
Just cant be in the room with insects :/
Dont wanna spend too much on this getaway and not have enough $$ for Vegas lol
