View Full Version : Sigh... on and of screeching brakes.

Hey, I purchased my FIRST car this April 1st, 2004 Mazda3 and I am loving it!

My only worry is the occasional screech my brakes make. Depending on the pressure I put on the brakes, it will screech. In hotter weather, it screeches more so than in colder weather. I asked the mechanic at the dealership that I bought the vehicle from and he explained to me:

since it is a used car it sits on the lot outside, something about water and snow, it can form corrosion, drive the car more and the rust will fall off...

Well, I've been driving the car now for about 900km since buying it on the 1st and the screech doesn't seem to be any better. How long does it take usually for rust to go away in this case? Is there some sort of oil I could apply so that the screech shuts up (it's embarrassing)?

Get better brake pads. I'm gonna guess the ones you have at the moment are a cheapy aftermarket brand.

I have no idea what kind they are (i'm also new at the car stuff).

What's curious is that while I was driving today, peak temperature (19 degree celsius), they would squeal occasionally. Then after work, driving around 9pm, temperature is a bit cooler, no squeals! Confused I am!

I've been considering just going somewhere and getting new brake pads or whatever but they may be in vain if my problem is minimal.

My car does this too on hot days. The previous owner decided to purchase cheapy aftermarket brand front pads, and whenever I'd do a lot of driving, they'd screech here and there once they're all warmed up. Usually it's just the compound that makes up the pads. There shouldn't really be any other problems... but it really is annoying at times!

did you purchase new pads? if so, how much did you get them for and where did you have them installed?

I didn't. There's still a good amount of meat left on the pads so I figure I'd run them down before getting a new set. I normally do all the work on my car myself, so when comes time, I'll be doing the swapping.
