Tried to take off my winter tires today and a piece of the security lug nut snapped.
How do I remove it now or is this something that I have to bring to a mechanic to do? I went to CT to see how much it would cost and they quoted $50-$100 depending on how hard it is to take off. Is there a tool that I can buy to DIY?

Any help appreciated! I actually have two lugs that are stuck, this one in the picture and another one that isn't snapped but feels stripped :(

I did the exact same thing last year, took it to a tire place, and they charged me 15 to grind it off.

^ that or hammer a smaller socket onto the lug and then carefully try to remove them.

Yea, like Jason said.... get a slightly smaller 12pt socket and smack it on with a hammer, then remove it.

same thing happened to me couple weeks ago, and I asked a friend who works at a shop to do it. He told me to use a socket and hammer but I didn't want to go that route so I brought it to him and he used those universal lock nut removers. Those are hard to find because their illegal so try going to a shop or just use a hammer and socket.

I have always used a little anti-sieze on my lugs.

Some people will swear against doing this, but I have done it for about 15 years now. I have never had a lug nut come loose, or a lug nut sieze on.

Illegal lug remover? :chuckle
Penetrating oil, hit the end with heat and a BFG on the end to break thread bond.
Looks like the key should still work on that lug.

If you use a torque wrench, the lugs should never seize. It's been said before that anti-sieze on lugs could cause them to back out but hey if it works for you then great.

I used a torque wrench, beam type, maybe i torqued it too much. Ah well, I'm going to try today with the tips above, thanks. As for the bubbling of the rims, you should see the whole wheel! It doesnt matter, they're winter tires anyways. (just noticed I made it over 100 post! whoohoo, over 5 years in the making. thanks everyone)

How much did you torque to?

That lock nut may have been split from prior over torquing and the salt water might have gotten in seizing it to the threads.

Success!
I got them off by sledge hammering a 19mm 12pt socket into it that I bought from princess auto for cheap (2 for $5) and using a breaker bar. Thanks everyone.
