Hello,

As I have been silently suspecting, my clutch has finally worn out and probably need replacing/maintenance. Cars got 135,000km.

Going to a Mazda dealership, what would I be looking at cost wise? $500, $1,000???

If you are kind enough to reply with something, at this point assume 'usual' clutch replacement work

Thank you.

The clutch is not under warranty unfrotunately... my clutch started giving up this month at 149,000. Time for a replacement....My advice dont go to the dealership... major labour...

You can get a lightweight flywheel and stage 1 clutch for under $800 (you could probably get it for $600 before shipping if you shop around) and install for $350 to $500. You will also need new fluids at approx. $75.

If your going to do it through Mazda you will be looking at least $1000. Go aftermarket and get something better.

I keep hearing that clutches aren't covered under warranty..and I totally get that...wear and tear blah blah, the guy who sold me my car said that if it goes within the 3 year warranty period they will replace it and have done so in the past. I am also friends with one of the techs at the dealership and he told me that the salesman was 100% correct. Anyone else hear this?

Clutches are a funny sticky point. If you wanted to, you could destroy one in no time. Thus they are hard to warranty. If it makes you feel better mine was feeling funny after 75,000. Replace it with a Exedy Stage 1 and man does it feel different. Better though much better.

I too is in need of a replacement clutch soon and is contemplating on getting a Stage 1 with lighter flywheel. How would you rate clutch pedal feedback as oppose to a brand new oem clutch? More pedal effort, harder to modulate, more susceptible to stalling? I want to be as thorough as possible as this may be the last time the car gets a new clutch.

Thanks,

What did you end up buying? Mines 143000 and im feeling pretty poor on redlight take offs. I was thinking its my intake and now im sure its my clutch. So expensive :(

I'm still getting used to it. The feel is way different due to the pressure plate change. The engagement is "right now". There seems to be a point were the clutch disengages fairly high up and engagement is less progressive more sudden. The effort is light just a touch stiffer then stock but the grab is good. May be it's just me but the throws seem easier, that could be due to the fluid change though. I'll be driving to work tomorrow and Friday so I'll see how it feels in traffic and get back to ya.

Thanks for the feedback thus far.

Would you go as far as saying it's harder to drive with the sudden catch?

Definitely looking forward to your experience in traffic.

Cruised into work today and the clutch is feeling closer to stock now. I read somewhere that there is a break in period for clutches so I guess I might have done that driving around town over the weekend. The "fast grab" point is not as harsh and you wouldn't know it's not stock except for the faster pedal travel.
