Being a new owner of a used 2006 Mazda 3 hatchback, I just notice one thing. When I was coasting in pretty low speed, say 30-40km/hr, sometimes I feel the car did engine brake. When I release my foot from the gas pedal, I can feel the car was pulled back. It was like downshifting but it didn’t downshift based on the indicator on the dashboard.

I hope I have explained it clearly… Did anyone else notice the same thing? Is it normal?

Thanks a lot!
David

Are you asking if engine braking is normal? Based on your comment about the dash I assume you have an auto, no?

Engine braking is normal. I can't speak for the mz3 auto tranny, but my wifes car slows down (not very sharply though) when I release the gas pedal. Obviously I feel engine braking in my mz3 manny tranny. You 'might' have a seized hand brake. Does you car decelerate sharply?

I would say it is pretty normal, I have noticed that my car also has more noticeable engine breaking than other cars I've had.

It's all that torque in the big 2.3 :huge smile

Thanks guys. Yes mine is a 2.3 automatic. It doesn’t slow down too sharply. Good to hear it is normal. 
