View Full Version : Symptoms of engine mount failure

Probably too many questions from me recently but please forgive a brand new Mazda3 owner. 

Again, bought a used 2006 hatchback. I know engine mount failure is one of the known issues for Mazda3. So are there any symptoms that I can catch before the failure really happens? Or how can I check under the hood if the failure is about to happen?

Thanks a bunch!

There will either be fluid all over or the rubber will have broken. Just look at it and you will be able to tell.

OR

Have a mechanic look at it.

My car vibrated a lot going over bumps in the road when my engine mount gave out.

Just look at it under the car to see what shape the mount/bushing is in.

Front passenger side rim was covered in black oily-type of substance on my 06 sedan.

are mazdas the only vehicles that have this hydraulic engine mount thing, Ive never heard of this before until i purchased my vehicle...Im guessing this just makes for a smoother ride?

no, more expensive cars use hydraulic mounts to absorb vibrations. yes it does make for a smoother ride.

The front passenger one can be deceiving, as the other mounts will take the weight of engine just fine. Only at specific times will you notice it has failed. When mine did, I noticed black fluid down along the inside.
Also you could poke your finger right through it was a good indicator.

About 250ish for the parts plus about 2 hours labour.

$250 parts and 2 hrs labour is a scamarama. Where's Joe? I bet OEM parts are $200 or less. You can order an AWR pmm for $168 US. Labour should be less than 1 hour. I'd bet Jim could replace 2-3 pmm's in 2 hours.

I'll have better numbers tomorrow - that was from memory but that's the price I pay for convenience :(

the only ever car ive driven is a 94 civic...are these really worth the extra cost in the end? I mean its a much smoother ride then what im used to but i bet a 98 civic would be alot smoother then what i was used too lol

I recently got my engine mount fixed at Avante Mazda.
I believe I paid about $190 plus tax. So nothing too horrific.

I dont think there are symptoms before it goes... And when it does go there will be more engine vibration when you are going around 50KM/H
When I bought my 2005 Hatch, the passenger mount was gone. I think the part was $80 and it took me a half hour to replace it. It was very straightforward.

I just got mine done for $120. Part from MoT and serviced at Street Performance!

My 3 was shaking when idle and just harsh.

Can you replace the engine mount at home without taking it to a garage? Or is it absolutely necessary to hoist it? I took my baby into a mechanic yesterday and discovered I have to get a new engine mount for the grinding/vibrating noise coming from the passenger side when accelerating at low speed from a stop.

Any ideas if this can be done at home with just the new part and a mechanic?

Lastly, does anyone know where I can purchase a cheap engine mount? I called the Downtown Mazda today and the service guy said $105 w/out labor.

Any help is appreciated!!

Thanks again!

I just replaced mine in 35-40 min. $108.19 for the part BBM4-39-060C (#3)@ Maple Mazda. Easy job if you have the right tools. No more shuddering at stop lights. :)

It's a 15 minute job - literally. (on my 2004 Mazda 3 Sport 2.3L)

Move coolant overflow (it's just clipped in, use flat head screwdriver).

Support engine with a jack
unbolt 2 bolts and 2 nuts (both are 17mm hex)
Discard old junk.
assembly is reverse of disassembly. :chuckle

15 mins = DONE.

wow was it made out of gold? where did you go? i believe the passenger side engine mount is about $107- at 1 hour of time to replace ($106.00) youd be looking about $213.00 - TM3 discount - $181.05 + hst = $204.58 give or take a few :.02

Jimmy Quoted me $40 for labor on my Mount. (Jimmy if from Street performance, a highly respected and recommended mechanic in Markham On woodbine between steeles and 407)

I however did it myself, i just put the jack under the motor and lifted it up, then unbolted the mount, and put in the new one and torqued it to spec. took me maybe a half hour or so with the right tools (socket wrench with extension)

In my Case the Rubber holding the metal piece broke, the actual bushing was still intact and was not leaking

When mine broke, I would get a big THUMP from the front wheel well when I hit a bump. I thought the suspension went. The mechanic told me it wa sa broken enginbe mount.

Are the new replacements mounts better designed than the old ones? I believe I need to replace mine, but I'm considering an aftermarket replacement if the new OEM ones aren't much better than the old ones

my gf's mazda 3 just hit 120K. the last little while i've been noticing the same symptoms as you guys. at one point, when putting the car in reverse (automatic), we could hear an audible vibration noise. this went away after a while, however, i've noticed quite a bit of "oscillation" and hard thumps/vibrations when the right front wheel would hit sharp bump/pothole. i also thought it was the suspension but i'm begining to think its definitely the motor mount. i'm going to take a closer look today and take a picture of it and post it back here for some feedback.

does everyone else think that these symptoms would be fixed with a MM change? The dealer here in edmonton wants $117 for the piece, i have no issues installing it myself, but i am thinking of maybe going with an aftermarket that isn't going to fail as quick as another OEM.

well I just checked it out. saw a little leakage on the side of the mount, and I was also able to feel that the rubber part of it was broken at the top. guess I'll be picking up a replacement tomorrow....can't believe I waited so long to search this up a little more
