Hey guys, would any of you mind sharing some spots that you go fishing at? You can pm me if you do not want to make it public.
I want to take my little cousins and nephews to fish and at the same time have a little bbq/pinic there. I just recently got into fishing so im not sure where we could catch something and have fun.
Any place where we could do both would be great

Hey Ben, I didn't know you were interested in fishing. I'm starting to get back into myself.
My new cousin-in-law wants to take me out fishing on his boat one Saturday this month. You wanna come along?

Depends on how far you want to drive and what you want to catch. If you just want some crappie for the kids to have fun then there are a million places. If you're going for something more specific (smallmouth, pike, musky, trout, salmon, etc.) then your options will change.
You may want to consider the Toronto Islands. They have BBQ Pit/Grills there and there's plenty of places to go fishing. Take a container or two of worms and the kids will be catching crappie all day long and you can catch some pretty decent fish from the shore there as well. You may or may not want to keep the fish out of the lake but the kids should at least have plenty of little stuff to have fun with!

I dont know what type of fish is good to catch. Im not keeping the fish, its more catch and release. But i may keep 1 or 2 depending on how clean the area is and what fish i catch. I would also like to catch something good and not those crappy sunfishes or bluegills. As for driving, i dont mind driving a little. ~2hrs is ok with me
Does anyone know how old you need to be to fish without a license? I think 18 under is ok right?

No worries buddy. It's been a few years since I've been out.
I'm more kick back and relax when I go fishing. My cousin-in-law is a sport fisherman; has his own bait line.
It's all good if you come. He said I can bring people as long as they are close friends of mine. Right now there will be about 9 or us, including yourself. I might bring Glen with me as well.

From the ministry/government website:
"Ontario residents need an Outdoors Card to fish in Ontario if they are at least 18 years old but have not reached their 65th birthday."
Just make sure to have proof of age with you in case you get asked, especially if you look like you could be 18 or older.
If you're willing to drive up to 2 hours then you have a TON of options available to you and picking one is over the others is mainly a matter of preference. Most places that I can think of are best fished by boat but you can shore fish a lot of places too. Are you planning to bring a portable grill or looking for somewhere that has ones for the public? If the latter, your options are definitely a lot more limited. Also, you want to catch some big ones but trust me, you want there to be some crappie/blugills/etc. around as well to keep the kids happy - they tend to swallow hooks though so have a good pair of needlenose pliers handy!

Yea thats true. I already have a tackle box with pliers, gloves, and a bunch of hooks and weights. Im looking to take them fishing on the shore because I have no boat and I would rather keep little kids on land. Also i will be brining my own grill and I will not be grilling the fish we catch lol. So any location you can recommend?

Never knew either Chris and Ben was into fishing.
I started fishing when I was 8, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Each summer I would go there and fish with my grandfather.

I haven't gone fishing for probably 10+ years now. I would love to get out there and start again but none of my buddies here like to fish! A TM3 fishing meet would be awesome haha.

Right now it's amazing fishing down by Sarnia (but probably not ideal to take your little cousin). You can easily catch the limit of pickerels/walleyes if you go around 9PM or so and return back around midnight.
Another good place is near Gravenhurst (Muskoka). I took some family friends fishing there and the kids were having a great time catching little sunfishes etc while i brought home 2 6lb pikes.

For a family day-trip - I say go to Hastings which is about 1-h&r east of tdot.
I took my nephews there for their first fishing trip and they caught a bunch of little sunfish.
You can purchase 1-day licenses for about $10

Bass season starts last weekend of June! There's plenty of conservation parks all around the GTA (Glen Eden, Halton Hills, Heart Lake, Mountsburg reservoir) a few of them allow BBQing. Also, July long weekend everyone is allowed to fish for free!

Our family cottage is on Rice Lake south of Peterborough. There are few spots with picnic tables, playground and docks to fish in Bewdley on the west end of the lake. However, you're not going to catch big fish fishing off the public docks. You'll need to be rent a boat to venture out there for the walleyes and bass (not open season yet).
Yes you need to license to fish and to operate a boat.

where about in Sarnia? lol should call me up next time you go man!
a spot that's i've been going for the past couple time is Port Bruce, down 401 , exit 203 , down highway 73 south, all the way down until you hit the port. you can catch minnows there as bait then use it to catch perch

I was going to be going to Port Stanley sometime soon for the beach, but maybe I'll try and fish while I'm there as well. It's not far from Port Bruce so I imagine the fishing would be similar.

From what my buddy told me, right now it's a bit early to start fishing lake Erie (at least for trolling out on the lake). About 3 weeks ago Lake Huron was pretty good, and now Lake Ontario is good. However these are all for trolling.

We'll have to go when I'm back in Waterloo! Always nice to have someone to fish with!

I go to Rice Lake fairly often, or used to anyways. I find that it is way too overfished now and just isn't anywhere near as fun as it used to be.

Yeah, Rice Lake is heavily pressured and full of traffic. In fact my cous got water raged (like road rage) there by an @sshole cottager who didn't like people fishing around his dock (which is on crown property btw); but that's another story. I used to compete in bass tourney's and for sure you need to get out in the water if you want to catch a good amount of decent sized fish.
Oh, and look out in Bewdley and Gores Landing bc there are eh-holes that are (were) running around shoving people off the docks into the lake.
Aside from that, if you time it right, the best shore fishing is river / creek fishing. Next would be dam fishing (Hastings, Campbellford, etc).

Wow, so many places to choose from. And that long weekend in July with free fishing is good to know too. How about timing? Isn't there a best time to fish if I want to catch something?

I'd be up for going on a TM3 fishing trip.. I use to fish frequently back home for rainbow trout. I even have a couple spare fishing rods if anyone needed one.

steve i didn't know you fish. we gotta go sometime.
the best spots are usually kept under tight lips, and you should just go out and explore honestly. thats what i've done, but if its for a little kid, port perry has a public dock that is loaded with sunfish; good for first timers but way to packed for my liking (i prefer fishing alone). its not near a road (like most locks or bridges) and the view is pretty decent.
In markham i used to fish swan lake north of 16th between markham rd and 9th. some decent sized carp, sunfish, perch, crappie. and then they put up no fishing signs last year...i never saw anyone else there so i suppose it was because of me? its a 5000 fine btw. there's also carp in toogood pond, and there was ONE carp in this pool near it which i thought was extremely strange.
this weekend IS bass season so i booked a boat way way way ago. kawarthas are always good, theres a whole mix of lakes in there. rice lake is undoubtedly what most people go to i suppose, too dirty and busy for my liking, again. have had good experiences at sturgeon and balsam as well, as they are more private. boat rentals are also a bit more on those lakes, but less pressure although locals might not be too fond of you.
there's an article somewhere that says hastings is one of the best places to fish. on walleye season opener you stand shoulder to shoulder with people and there's loads of fish to catch. I started out there, but I'm the kind that would rather be alone somewhere nice and catch nothing than be shoulder to shoulder with people who keep everything and cars driving behind you. dont take me as one of those elitists fisherman, but i do like my peace and quiet.
in london, i spend my free time outside of studying fishing so there's alot of good spots and less pressure there. the river thames runs through and i've caught a countless amount of carp right downtown or on campus. 10+lb and noone catches them...have also pulled a pike from the thames, but obviously don't keep anything. north aways in a very secret spot is an AMAZING steelhead run come winter...can't wait.
west of london there's a walleye run in early april, where you limit out. also pulled a largemouth out of there late april. one of my favourite spots because there is noone there. there's also trout there, might be local population not sure but you can hear them popping flies off the top.
anyways long winding email, but i like fishing more than i like my mazda 3 LOL
feel free to pm me with any other questions

I always thought Bass season opened last weekend - 4th Saturday of June.
But yes - please use PM's to advise people of any specific fishing holes.
I have 2 trips planned already for fishing. Hopefully be able to get some tight lines on Simcoe and Joseph.
Let's start posting pics of some of our catch!

Buddy of mine in St Catherines knows a whole lot of places down there if you're interested in driving that far. You can fish in Milne Conservation area here in Markham, but you can't keep it (or eat it), and you don't want to, the water is super polluted. You can BBQ in the park too.
Edit: I'd totally be interested in a TM3 fishing trip, would be good.

Went to Lake Simcoe yesterday and landed a bunch of smallies. No pics though, I didn't want to bring my phone/camera in case I ended up in the water :(
Used this for a little off-shore fun

It would be nice to have a TM3 BBQ / fishing derby.
Shoreline would probably work best, unless anybody wants to donate their boat.
Any thoughts.

Whoops youre right. I just checked. My bad for the misinformation.
For the past number of years ive been fishing for bass since the 3rd Saturday in June, as have some friends/family and co workers.

I was up in the Minnissing Swamp (near Barrie) for a canoe trip and saw a ton of pike being caught and a few dead ones floating. I'm told there's also large eels and lots of other fish there. The only downside is that all of the best fishing is by canoe access and there are at least 10 major log jams to portage between Angus and Edenvale.
