Question for those that use the tip tronic on the AT mazda 3's. When shifting from 3-4-5, do you find sometimes you have to wait a few seconds before the car allows you to shift to the next gear? I mean I know i'm well above the speed for the car to go into 4-5 because I see the specs in the manual and I can shift in at the same speed but just have to wait like a good few seconds before I can shift into those gears... is this a way of the ECU just telling me, I'm trying to shift to early or quickly or is there something wrong? i find sometimes I have to shift twice to actually get it into the next gear.

it's still a traditional automatic slushbox at heart, so you can't expect it to act instantaneously... try working it a little slower

I'm trying too ... it really sucks because i used to drive manual. I only got this car so the wife could have something easier to drive. The lease for the manual was over and so I bought AT so that she could also drive the car around as she wanted to (sometimes i double think that was a good idea ... but ssshh... don't tell her he he). Anyways i guess I'm going to have to try at it a bit slower.

Sounds like something wrong imoa. I find my clutching much tighter when it shifts in manual mode than the automatic shift which seems smooth and slower in comparison. Still a "manual-mode" tranny will never beat a manual 0-60. p.s. I got the atx for my wife too!

I have the same problem too. When I push or pull the tiptronic stick, I seem to have to wait a bit for it to shift...

I've noticed the same thing with the manual shift function on my automatic. It takes a certain amount of time to shift gears and if it's not finished shifting it doesn't go up unless I trigger it again.
I wasn't surprised because I'm fairly certain than the shifter operates in manual mode as a 3 mode digital switch (up, down, off). Triggering a shift just sends the signal to the computer and if it's not done a full shift cycle it will just ignore it, with no mechanical changes or memory. I'm not sure if I've explained this properly, I'm a computer programmer so I'm mostly out to lunch when it comes to explaining technical stuff to normal people.
If you are trying to run redline with the car make sure to shift at about 6,000 RPM because it wont shift until 7 :)

I've never redlined my 3, but I don't think it can even hit 7k O_o

if you are in 3rd, and quickly try to go to 4 then 5. It'll take a few seconds to get to five.
If you are talking about a delay in shifting, I only experience it from 1st to 2nd.

i have an 06 and it always shifts right awya. i never have a delay. i would assume that it is the ECU protecting itself.
