Dumbest
Idea
Ever.
Hey! We've just recovered from a huge economic dip, so lets dump a billion dollars in just providing security for this stupid shit, so that we can lose EVEN MORE revenue from normal commerce/business.
I understand the good that can come from such a conference, and am indifferent about the topics, but Toronto simply is not the right place to play host.

I'll be affected, but big overtime opp. We'll see if I actually get into the red-zone, I'm still waiting for my security passes.

I suspect I am woefully uninformed about the whole thing.
All I know for sure is that large parts of Toronto are going to be disrupted, and that it will cost a bucket load of money.
I really don't have a handle on the stated benefits -- either of the summit itself, or to Canada as the host country.
Any argument about whether or not the spending and disruption is worthwhile really needs to be based actually understanding the situation and not on rhetoric, of which there is an awful lot.

In my opinion this is just one big photo-op. There is no way that these people will be able to do anything significant in 2-3 days.
That said...I will gladly stay home from work should I be told to if it will be too much of a hassle to get to my office at the north private area of Pearson. We're being told that all air traffic and motorcades will be coming from the center private area.

I'm working from home all week. G20 Summit blows donkey b@lls. I was speaking to a woman who works in a retail shop on the main floor of the office tower where I work. She's not on salary; the shop has decided to close for a couple of days so she won't be getting paid. WTF...
My friends dad is a cop and he's working 12 hour shifts for the next 14 days straight.
They have it downtown becuase its like a publicity stunt almost. They could EASILY have it somwehere else that would be just as efficient but cost a FRACTION but hey, wheres the publicity in that... we WANT ppl to pay attention to us and cause an uproar.
After all, nothing like pulling out trees so the protesters won't use them as weapons... :loco

Taking thursday-friday off and/or working from home. Too much trouble to travel from the east end out to Mississauga for work when the gardiner, 427, and 401 near the airport are all going to be screwed by random closures all day.

Also driving in this morning felt like it was a holiday week.. traffic was very light for the most part.. Gardner/Lakeshore didn't even have much volume, that was around 7:50am this morning.. I assume traffic will get a bit lighter this week.. well I hope so until Thursday

Expect. delays towards the 401 East bound. They had signs up all this month....

This morning I went to my company's satellite hangar and parked inside were 3 Chinook helicopters and what might be Obama's Marine One plus a whole load of equipment. BTW do you know someone named Sam? Works with Air Canada. Saw the same thing. =)
I was trying to avoid traffic as I was leaving work earlier today. I could see that the 427 was completely stopped (I can see the airport and the 427 from my work), I could also see that the short cut through the airport was moving normally... While a little surprised, my coworker took that route and I asked him to call me if there were any road blocks... I never heard from him. So I decided to cut through it.
Well, wouldn't you know it. That short cut is how they're transporting all the big wigs. A very friendly Peel Police officer laughed when I said "I guess I'm not authorized huh?" and had me turn around. So on my way out I had to wait for this motorcade to go on by... I wait and wait, and then there's a clearing with no one moving. So I turn in behind the motorcade... made eye contact with the police officers and no one asked me to keep my distance or anything. So I just kept driving. Apparently there were more vehicles and they just stacked up behind me... so I was literally in the middle of the motorcade...sort of. I was buffered by police officers, but it was funny lol.
Seeing as I'm still here AND managed to film it (and not get ticketed or anything), I can only assume it wasn't Obama's motorcade. =) True story! ;)
As for my friend, I can only assume he's in a holding cell somewhere. =) Bastard!

G8/G20 is, as mentioned, a photo-op. Nothing ever comes of any of the conferences, and serves only as fodder for the hippies and is a vain attempt at showing their respective citizens that the politicans are actually doing something. Even the climate change and Kyoto accord meetings have been useless up to this point.
2-8 days of HUGE taxpayer dollars being wasted to come up with "we agree to work together on X", "we resolve to work harder on Y", and "we found that Z is disturbing, and will collectively observe and share information". So pointless - there are no measurable results from any of it! Its like telling your boss during a personal development plan "I resolve to work with more resolver".
That my friends is $1.2 Billion dollars in security fail...(The video that is)
LOL I thought that at first, but I'm sure had I tried to approach the motorcade some bad stuff would have happened. =) They were very well organized and had a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of cop cars in the area. Hell, the road block I approached, just on the other side of the block, there was a parking lot FULL of police cruisers. Plus there were cop cars sitting off the side of the main roads leading to that area with those dual camera systems that pick out license plates and stuff (I'm assuming that's what they do...).
I think they were in very much in control the entire time. I'm pretty sure if I turned right with them and got on the 427, they would have stopped me immediately.
Although, nearly-blacked-out-Mazda FTW!! ;) I fit in with their motorcade... lol
Is that the Convair Dr route that cuts along the south end of the airport along the 401?
That's the one... I know it was crazy thinking it would be open lol... But I figured my coworker successfully made it through when I never heard from him.

I have a feeling things might get a little ugly, especially after this remarkable abuse of power on the part of the province (from TheStar.com (http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/torontog20summit/article/828367--g20-law-gives-police-sweeping-powers-to-arrest-people?bn=1)):
The province has secretly passed an unprecedented regulation that empowers police to arrest anyone near the G20 security zone who refuses to identify themselves or agree to a police search.
...
According to the new regulation, “guards” appointed under the act can arrest anyone who, in specific areas, comes within five metres of the security zone.
Within those areas, police can demand identification from anyone coming within five metres of the fence perimeter and search them. If they refuse, they face arrest. Anyone convicted under the regulation could also face up to two months in jail or a $500 maximum fine.
...
For Des Rosiers, she is especially worried because most people, including protesters, will operate under the assumption they have a right to refuse handing over identification to police.
“Protesters would have been told that the law of the land is that you don’t have to talk to police officers if you don’t want to,” she said. “This changes things because even if you attempt to approach, it gives the power to the guard to demand identification.
“It’s a significant intrusion on people’s rights.”

It really sucks that there is always one group of people who are just there to cause $h!t... maybe the world leaders will learn from this (yeah, right) and hold the next conference in a remote location. I heard an interview with David Miller earlier in the day, when he was talking about the "anarchists". I find it funny that he said that certainly none of the anarchist protesters are from Toronto, they are outsiders that came into the city just to reek havoc... hmmmm, either he is doing some major PR for Toronto, or he has no sense of reality. Although I'm sure that many of these protesters are from outside the city, it is certain that many are also from Toronto... unless the mayor checked the ID's of all 700 or so of them to confirm.

actually there's a couple of shots of me on CP24.. one was the riot guy arrested the naked guy and throwing him in to the police car. I was like wth.. they came charging around the corner... and I'm running out of the way.
Other, I'm next to the city tv reporter and were watching the car burn.. and they pan to me as an example of a bystander taking photos.
I was wearing brown shorts, white shirt, (black jacket - depending on day), white hat.. with the stupidest grin.

Wow Zero, I would have been standing right beside you at King/Bay
I got there and then the protest showed up. I was standing above the crowd. Had I met you before, it would have been a TM3 sighting!
I was at Queens Park as well - that was crazy. They shot rubber bullets) even if Bill Blair denied it. They also used horses to charge to push the crowd back. I dont blame them for the rubber bullets. They did this after they took bottles of waters and rocks.
This city is insane right now! I was following the group that just got arrested down by the Novotel.
I broke off from this group cause they hit the esplanade and I was like Bah - thats boring. Then I couldnt get back to them cause the riot cops showed up out of nowhere and blocked them in. Now they are being arrested LOL

The police themselves were filming/taking pics of MANY of these people. They also had undercover cops within the crowds also taking pictures/video. Most of these guys are known and will be caught. It's only a matter of time before they identify the other individuals who participated in this shit. I also heard that last night they made a few arrests around the GTA of people who were involved.
These black bloc tactic people's pictures are posted ALL over the internet on random websites and social media sites, so they can't hide.

Totally agreed. I think their "Sit back and watch" approach yesterday let them win the political battle. It's obvious the violent protesters are only there to cause trouble. They probably don't even know what the true protesters want (Although I think those idiots should go home too, it's obvious no one cares about their cause anymore... but at least they are peaceful.) After the riots yesterday, they could have let the cops loose today and unleashed any amount of violence and most sane people would have been on the police's side. I'm glad they didn't though, even though it would have made me grin on the inside.

Im barely in this video! I was down there making the same video at the street level. I was right at the front of the line (photos only - I was not participating, singing or taunting).
I screamed like a bitch when I heard the batons against the shield LOL
On another note - why so much hate on this page? I was downtown all weekend because I live here, and I wanted to capture some moments on Camera. I in no way was instigating cops, chanting or anything. Matter of factly, I made a point of telling every cop I walked by that they were doing a fine job. There was no reason for that rush on the video. People were being peaceful. The cops charged right at the end of the anthem? Pffft.
On top of that, what that video didnt show was the cops behind us, randomly running out in a swarm of 6 or 7 people and grabbing people who were standing there observing. I dont care what you say, its a free country, and If I want to watch stuff on my streets, then I have the right to do that without worrying about randomly being snatched and arrested.
I (before this incident) was surrounded by about 20 cops earlier in the day. They made me take my bag off and went through my belongings as well as made a note of my ID. They were doing this all over the city. I get why they have done that, and I understand the reason and I was fully compliant. That crap on Queen st was bull. People were being detained for leaving a bar? Making them stand in the rain for hours only to be released? Bull

Hey, at least they waited until they stopped singing the anthem. ;)
Seriously though, I understand where you're coming from, this being a free country and all, you should be able to go where you please. And if this were Friday, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Given yesterday's riots, I don't know if standing right at the front of the crowd that's squaring off with riot police is the best thing to be doing. You aren't exactly making the cop's lives easy. What if that turned into a serious clash with the police? You would be one of those innocent people we read about "I was just standing around, minding my own business and suddenly the cops came up to me and hit me with a baton..."
They're trying to clear up the streets today, not taking any chances. Standing around, at the front of a crowd of protesters while claiming to be neutral....... well,.... whatever, I guess someone has to take those pictures I'm seeing from the comfort of my office. =)
Just don't expect them to know that you just happen to be walking by.... Or treat you as such.

Well I dont think my presence there would have warranted a beating with a Baton.
And Friday, I was walking around and about and faced the same hostility from the cops. Only on that day, there were no mounted police to herd the crowd.
And for the record, I have the utmost respect for the job the officers were doing this weekend. And I get that tensions were a bit high after yesterdays events however, my beef isnt with that charge in the video (I was also at Queens Park the day before when they deployed the very same tactics). My beef is with the number of people they detained at Queen and Spadina tonight. Holding people out in the rain without processing who was trouble and who wasnt.
And yes, enjoy the photos going around the net. Cause some of us have to go out there and subject ourselves to the environment to capture some of the moments. I knew that I was taking a risk, but for me, that's what made my pictures all that more valuable.

IMO
I think the Police did a great job.... One of their strategys, and it shows it works, is they can rely on amature video or their own videos to nab the thugs doing the damage.
Not only the Police taped the riots but im sure they will use this for evidence as well as a learning tool for future training...
All in all Work is back in downtown, the fence was not breached.. I'd say Chief Blair Promised what he said he'd do.
Like what they said in the radio....
If you dont obey the Police they will arrest you, you throw things at them they will arrest you, wearing masks to hide your identity, they will question you and or/ arrest you.
The people who were detained wrongfully, knew that their was a chance they could be arrested. In terms of the way they were treated at the detention, What are they expecting, a rehab clinic or Detention for celebrities?
With them being offered warm clothing and food and water.... Id say that was helping.... Does terrorists in a camp do the same thing to their prisoners? I dont think so.
I love how the innocent try to describe the cops as enemies... CP24 correspondance back up the ISU and Police rather than listening to negative comments from the public.
I agree its great that yesterday was a peaceful protest, and the teenagers are trying to show their support to their detainees, but if you don't listen to Police, don't think twice that they will help or listen to demands.
Just my 2 cents.. Im even more confident of our law enforcement when it comes to apprehending criminals.
Big thanks goes to the brave people hear, that where involved in this weekend taking pics or telling their stories.
BTW... The video posted with the protest singing O Canada, then having the Police charge them, Canadian Priceless!!!
Oh and those people in the sewer... I don' t think they were doing harm... I think they hid during the comotion, and tried to get themselves out of the sewer...

Lol..and so she should! I'd throw a couch at them if it would fit!
This whole cop thing, can go both ways.
First off, I didn't like how they detained those people in the rain, that was pure bs. They believed that there were some Black Bloc members within that group off of Spadina and Queen. Well.. After a few hours they just release that crowd unconditionally. Which makes it pretty pointless, because why would it take 2+ hours to do so? and even if there were black block members STILL within that group, well.. they pretty much got released.
Now on the other side of things, people are complaining that they were down there to take pictures, well... Didn't the cops warn people to stay away from that area? Maybe if they listened, and avoided the danger zone, than maybe that whole " 2 hour " hold up would of been decreased. That's like saying, Oh look there's a shooting going on, let's go down and take some pictures.

If the police had intelligence that the Black Bloc was at the protest on Sunday, they thats ample reason for them to detain that crowd. Police can't go to every single person and ask why they are there, who is to say people won't lie.
As for the temp jail? What do you expect full blwon jail cells with double pillows? It is a temporary holding area. give me a break..

This protesting has annoyed me, as there hasn't been any one issue that has been protested... that has actually been given any real press. It was basically, who could yell louder... and no one was listening.
So why not protest at a different time... when someone can hear you? If you protest say on a wednesday afternoon in the middle of summer... im sure you'll be the only protest group and you'll make prime time news.
When the Tamil protest went on.. it got me to learn more about it. But during these last one... all I see is a bunch of idiots.

People are spoiled, go protest in some other countries, I would like to see these protestors cry about the conditions there and how they get treated.
You protest, get detained, get arrested... atleast in Canada you are released and not killed..
Idiots.
I was going to work today and as i passed police HQ i saw a bunch of riot police getting into a bus, couldn;t help but walk by and actually thank the guys and girls for a job well done.
My thoughts exactly.. they deserve thanks... But im sure they would say "Just doing our jobs"
And a great job at that!
As far as I'm concerned, the sloppy police work and reports of police brutality are nothing to be proud of. This video sickens me as a Canadian.

You should wait until ALL of the information is brought forward about what occured this weekend before making judgements on "sloppy" police work and "reports" of brutality.

Too many people are making judgements about the actions that police took over the weekend without knowing the full picture. The police took just as much video footage as the people in the crowds because they know that they'll be crucified in the media reports. People are making all sorts of bullshit accusations about the temporary jail that was set up also. That entire place was wired for video so that the police can cover their behinds. I had a friend who was behind the lines on Friday and he explained to me how the police were pellted with rocks and bottles and spit upon. Nobody seems to want to bring attention to the fact that they were well beyond patient with their actions that day. The crowd was trying to get a rise out of the officers and they wouldn't cave in. Before rushing a crwod of protestors that weren't being cooperative they were warned multiple times. If you've been asked to move along and don't want to listen then your ass better be prepared to suffer the consequences.

I would have to agree with statement. See I believe that it is one thing to protest, fine. Another to defy authority (peacefully), fine. Then its another to try to illicit a reaction. Now im sure in that group, there were many peaceful protesters, but when it came down to it, they were mixed in with the bad ones. If you see the guy next to you throwing shit... and you know the guy is trying to get a rise outta the cops, maybe you figure you should get outta there.
If there were no innocent protesters to hide behind, im sure the cops woulda beat the hell outta all the black bloc that was causing shit - and that I am ALL FOR!.

Exactly, if you are surrounded by people throwing things at police or breaking windows, maybe you should get out of there. So many idiots in Toronto.

I see there is a very pro police trend on this forum regarding these issues. That's a bit disturbing considering the circumstances. They rounded up and detained 1000 people when there were only 50-100 damaging property. That is the definition of sloppy police work. Where were the cops when those few vandals were slowly making their way up Yonge Street smashing windows and setting cop cars on fire? Oh yeah, they watched them and did nothing! Long after those vandals had gone home to brag about smashing stuff with their buddies the police started rounding up peaceful protesters, seemingly at random. I'm appalled that a group of peaceful protesters were charged at in the video I posted for no apparent reason. They were singing our National anthem for **** sakes!
Oh, let's not forget the 'secret' powers that the police were using to demand identification and search anyone within 5 metres of the security fence. It came out yesterday that It never existed! So police were infringing on peoples rights guaranteed by our Charter under false pretenses!

I'm in favor of arresting 100 people if 10-15 of them are black bloc/thugs. At least you got the vandals off the street, the police have the right to arrest and detain up to 24hrs and not press charges. Yes there are 90 innocent victims, yes you pissed off alot of people. But they just saved another cop car going up in flames, or store front being vandalized and robbed from. Which in the end, is added to the tab that WE'RE all going to pay for in the end.
As for cops doing nothing, they are just human beings like you and I. If i'm in a group of 20 riot gear fitted police surrounded by 2000 protesters, how would you feel? Damage is dealt in numbers and they'd get into some hot water.
These ppl deserve to get the shyt kicked outta them, I would have been beating everyone with a effing night stick. The fact they were all screaming NO CAMERAS just prooves how big pf *****s they are... They wanna do the crime but they don't wanna take responsability... they are all nothing but a bunch of COWARDS... scum of the earth.

I am working on something that might interest everyone, I am starting to get irritated by people who insist on putting the pressure on the Police and the Mayor, when realistically, the Prime Minister should be the one held accountable for all the chaos that happened in our city.
I'll post it up here once I am done.

i heard the federal government is saying WE have to pay for the damages caused by the G20 which is pure bs because it wasnt our idea to hold it in our city core.
To burner - you have to understand that the black bloc tactics are to change into black cloths, vandalize then change back to civvies so if you were in a cops position how would you know which of these peaceful "protestors" are actually legit or if they are black bloc members hiding in a crowd? there is only one answer..you dont. That is why unfortunately the only way to handle this is to round up everyone and search them its a long process and inconvenient to alot of people down there but like many said before if your down there your allowing yourself to be put in harms way if people were warned before the summit even started its your own decision if you want to heed that warning or not. Regarding that video again, they were WARNED to move along from that street yet they decide to stay and taunt the cops and how DARE they sing our national anthem AFTER they destroy one of canadas most beautiful cities, too many people take advantage of the freedom and beauty of this country and tarnish it the way they did. If this happened in china they wouldnt have 900 DETAINED they would have 900 bodies to bury I highly wish the next G20 will be in China unfortunately its in France and thats gonna be 10x worst than here

Actually, the next summit is being held in South Korea. And unlike our ignorant and idiotic Prime Minister, their leader has decided it for it to be held in an Island in South Korea.

The next G-8 Summit will be held in France.
The next G-20 summit will be held in South Korea, but the one after that one will be in France, coinciding with the G-8.
The G-20 takes place twice a year.

Those 'idiots' are exercising their right as a Canadian to peaceful protest. With so many important issues and problems in this country and around the world, I'm not surprised that the messages get lost in the crowd.
In a place like France, protests are almost a weekly event. The result is a government that is afraid to upset the people. Something that is severely lacking in our own government.

I do have to agree that they have the right to a peaceful protest. And I do believe that there were very many peaceful protestors and very important issues. But with that being said, the messages were lost because of all the competition.
I personally feel that regardless of the protest, our leaders, or any leader for that fact will really ever listen.
As a citizen, I will listen and educate myself, and open to protest. But if everyone is coming at me at the same time, your gonna lose me. So why not protest when people will really listen? I say this because the Tamil protest, was peaceful to my knowledge. Had many people, and got the message across. I believe personally that that protest was successful. They educated me at least, and now i can form my own opinon on the topic.
I think there were issues more important than the Tamil protest (No offense meant here), but they chose the wrong time to display it. Hell if someone protested right now on queens park, Ill listen... there the only one talking.
But, in this case... where there were many violent/disruptive bloc, why get associated with them. People always say, you got caught up with the wrong people. You cant expect to hang out with a Gang Member, then if they bust him and your sitting next to him say oh... im just sitting here.

Yes, and they were asked to protest in a designated spot in Queens Park.... Not and try and march down to the G20 barrier. What the unedited video proved was that the police had ask them to leave. They pretty much ignored it and loitered around until they decided on a whim to sing the national anthem.
