View Full Version : Which front and rear speakers for my system?!

SO...I have an Alpine PDX-5 amp, Cache COE8 LOC (found a great deal on it, I intended to buy the COE6 but found hte 8 cheaper), and an 8 inch JL W3 (4 ohms) mounted in one of VCP's 2010 hatch stealth boxes.
What components should I get for the front, I'll do matching Coax in the rear doors I imagine. I have been researching everywhere, for days and am no closer to a decision, so I am looking for real world user reviews or suggestions. Price does matter to a point, I would spend no more than 300$ taxes in on a set of components for the front, but the cheaper the better.
I noticed Selective Sound has the Morel Tempo6's on sale for 249. They are kind of entry level Morels though, so I can't decide. Also, what other factors should I think about when buying speakers for my doors? What fits, what doesn't, So many questions!
Any insight and real world experience is helpful! This is the first car of my own in which I will be upgrading the audio system.
I will be Dynamatting the doors as a side note!
Edit: Alpine PDX-5 is rated at 75W RMS x4 @1.5-4 ohms, and 300W RMS x1 @ 1.5-4 ohms, but they are underrated. every birth sheet I have found is over 100W RMS x4 and over 400W RMS x1 on the sub channel, so power for my purposes will not be a problem. I have read about the hissing noises but that is why I bought a COE8, rather than a cheap LOC that does not have boosting/summing capabilities, makes the PDX-5 work like a dream so I hear.

I upgraded all my component door speakers with 6x9 infinity reference speakers...I dont have my speakers amped, just running direct off my 4x 50W sony deck, and never once have i heard any distortion what so ever (they are rated for 100W RMS each)
Now I dont know about you, but my baseline mazda 3 only had 4 component speakers and no tweeters, so I had to get these speakers because they had a tweeter with them....if you mazda has tweeters mounted some where else, then i wouldent bother with these speakers, get a component and separate tweeter, that way you can mount the tweeter in the stock position, if not, these are the best performance/value i could find! and believe me I did my research :)
The tweeters on them can pivot, so you can point them in the best direction (I put mine straight up, because the speakers are so low in the door)...the speaker hit really good lows, and fit like a glove...(The only thing i had to do, was shave a small ring of plastic off the door still...but you will see what im talking about when you get there!!

Ahhh Thanks! I should mention that I have a 2010 GT so I have stock tweeters in the sail panels. Defly going the round speaker route, with tweeters in the stock location. Crutchfield has tons of stuff, great site for sure!

try sonicelectronix.com and onlinecarstereo.com cheaper prices than crutchfield even after the rate conversion and border fees. for your amp i would go with type x components. if your really on a budget type r.
:)
Yees, it’s hard to choose.
I like a big soft tweeters, but Tempo 6 for 250$ are looking a bit pricey but definitely they are sounding better then Infinity. Don’t know your prices, Morel Hybrid has the low crossover point (1800Hz) and sounds more brightly like a 3way components. You will use a pretty powerful subwoofer and I can suggest to use the Alpine spr-17s , these speakers are flawless acoustically. The same price as Tempo6 , Tempo is a bit better in low mid-bass ranges but alpine reproduces the vocal and some synthetic noises more accurately
As a rear speaker you can use almost anything what you want, It doesn’t play a big role.

So...I purchased Morel Tempo 6 components for the front, and Morel Tempo 6 Coax for the rear. Still waiting for my amp to arrive in the mail, should be tomorrow or Tuesday, then I will have to begin the install!
After doing more reading about these particular speakers, people keep talking about sending serious wattage to these babies, but keeping the gains turned down. I am wondering if I should bridge my 4 speaker channels to get 2 higher powered channels to drive the components, and run the rear coax off from the COE8/headunit (ie unamplified). Any thoughts?
Congrats with the good choice. As any other, this speaker should be powered by lower power than RMS. The RMS is a maximum for controlled sinusoidal signal. Musical spectrum is different thing. For Tempo it will be normally to have 75-90watt per channel at maximal volume and equalizer settings. It’s exact what you need for100watt amplifier. 100 watt is also a critical number, where amplifier starts to clip. You don’t need to bridge the amplifier for components, result will be worse(another thing when components use their own channel), and the head unit can’t compete with 100 watt amplifier , you can't balance the scene with this setup.

If my GF wasn't with me while shopping at Selective Sound, I would have gotten the Dotechs for the front as well. She put an end to that idea REAL quick LOL!!
Have you started your install? It looks like your going to have a pretty sweet setup! Where are you going to mount your amp? FYI even in this crazy hot weather my amp has yet to clip while mounted under my passenger seat.

My setup wouldn't be as sweet without your slick stealth box for my sub!! Thanks again!
I'm going to put the amp under the passenger seat as well. The LOC I will put in the glove box, that big rear section, closest spot to the back of the OEM head unit for tapping signals, and accessible for tuning.
I've not started to install anything yet, I may tonight after work, I think I will hire out the sub install, and maybe the door speakers too since I want professionals to do the sound deadening, I've never done it, they are the experts LOL.

You should get Davis to do the front door install at the very least. He put in my Hybrid Audio Clarus 6.5's in my front doors and sail panel and spent hours sealing it up tight. It hits the mids very hard. Highly recommend you go this route. Your Tempos with a properly sealed door will sound waaaay better than the doetechs with a newb install.

WORD!!!
I had a shop in Barrie do my install and I regret it. I asked them to prep my doors, I'm sure they didn't, and the tuning...WHAT TUNING!?? they did nothing right...
Took my car to Davis today and we all had a great chuckle about the horrid job they did "tuning" my system. Anyway...20 minutes in the Selective Sound garage cured the terrible tune I had....
My Tempo 6's are still amazing, even with what is sure to be a bad job of prepping my doors by the original garbage shop. What a joke! Who crosses these Morels at 110 Hz!?!? LOL!!!
REALLY wish I went there for the install, I would have saved money...they charge way less labor than what I paid the thieving morons at the original shop. Regardless, with the tune I had done today...I have no need for dotechs...the Tempo6's really pound! Can't beat them for 250$ I reckon!
