MONTREAL — A father and his daughter were killed after their motorcycle slammed into a car that stopped to let a duck cross the highway.
Quebec provincial police said Monday they are still investigating the crash that also sent the man's wife to hospital.
Sgt. Richard Gagne said the woman's injuries are serious.
He said charges could be laid in the case but he was not specific, saying only that it's illegal to stop on the highway in Quebec.
"In one or two weeks, we'll submit a report to the Crown prosecutor for a decision," he said.
Gagne identified the victims as Andre Roy, 50, and his 16-year-old daughter Jessie. Both of them were on the same motorcycle and the injured woman was riding on a separate one. Both motorcycles hit the rear of the car around 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening.
The driver of the car was not injured.
"The woman driver of the car stopped because they have a duck walking on the road," Gagne said.
Gagne said road conditions were good.

in the last month ive killed a raccoon and a bunny (my fav animal)... im not swerving and taking the chance i lose control of my car for an animal.
last month there was a family of geese crossing the 410 under queen and i had to slam on my breaks bc the 2-3 cars ahead of me came to a full stop, all 3 lanes too.

I thought we were legally supposed to stop for geese?

I was on the 401 when those geese were crossing lol. Yeah a bit annoying but what can you do?
This incident with the duck is horrid though. Especially since a teen was killed because of it.

I hit a family of geese crossing the Gardiner last year in my bronco...they literally came out from under the guardrail....it wasn't pretty

Humans before animals. If you can safely stop then go for it, but when you're going along at 100km/h and something pops out from the side of the road just keep going straight. Deer/elk/elephants are the exception :p

Wow...stopped on the highway? Some people need to get their priorities straight and be aware of their surroundings.....if no one on the highway, sure, but come on....causing this is retarded

If it's lower then your windshield hit the damn thing. It's safer then locking up, or losing control trying to avoid it.

Just to play devil's advocate, but could it be argued that the motorcyclists were following a bit too close? Or weren't paying attention to the road? That car could've been stopped for anything, though I guess it would be weird to have one lane of traffic suddenly stopped while others flowed freely. Just saying.

I agree 100%.
Also i would like to mention that hitting a small animal can be very dangerous. A close friend of mine hit a racoon a few years ago and broke a tie rod at 85km/h... he is very lucky not to have rolled it. Even so it still took out the bumper cover, fog light, front fender (from the wheel) and tire and rim.
Imagine your right front tire suddenly facing 90 degrees to the right while your left is pointed straight ahead at highway speeds.

Totally agree with you but look at it this way. Take your chance with a racoon rather than swirve and hit thousands of pounds of metal coming in the other direction.
I agree that IF it is safe to stop then do so, if not then you have no choice but to hit it. The ppl in the motorcycle may have been following too closely but it depends on how fast she stopped, they may not have been able to stop that fast. Either way, I say she should be charged with wreckless or something. She may have saved some dumb ducks but she killed 2 people.

I dunno, my friend said that the bikers werent paying attention.
But imo, you wouldnt have any distractions when your on a motorcycle, I mean you cant reach into the back or passenger seat to get something or text right? So I'm pretty sure that this lady was dumb as hell and braked as soon as she saw the ducks, I mean were talking about going 100 on the highway here and then you suddenly STOP? People behind you couldnt even predict that you were going to stop (unless they saw the ducks and thought "OH she's gonna stop in the middle of the highway, going at least 100 for the ducks).

I would much rather take my chances with the animal, you should NOT stop on a highway for a duck.

Something happened to me during father's day in which this car in front of me on the HOV lane started braking abruptly over and over again in which case I started getting closer and closer up to the point where I honked because there was nothing ahead of him/her... or so I thought. The car suddenly swerves to the shoulder at the last minute and then I see a box just sitting there which didn't leave me enough time to react so I had to run over it.
Like wtf?! Why did you have to be so indecisive and not just move out of the path of the box right away. Good thing there was nothing in the box that could have damaged my car. I was so upset... grrr /rant
Anyway :OT

From the other discussions I read (Montreal forum) she stopped on a blind turn on the highway. IMO if the car had been completely visable one of the motorcyclist should have been able to avoid it.

Didn't the driver in the car think about just slowing down instead of coming to a full stop. Getting hit from behind by a moving vehicle is just as dangerous - didn't that thought cross her mind?
While the results here were tragic and I agree with the Humans>animlas..I have to wonder why the bikes hit the car? Generally speaking a bike will outbrake most cars and especially on a bike you have to be watching and aware of what's going on in front of you. The bikes shoulder some of the blame here too.

Agreed - on a bike you have to ride with 100% attention ALL the time. Otherwise something may kill you as you don't have a protective cage around you. In this case, something unfortunately did.

I don't understand how some of you think that a motorcycle going 100KM/hr can stop immediately without causing it to flip. If the rider actually applied his brakes fully, the bike would've flipped front first. The rider was a 50 year old and his daugther was 16, and the wife/mother was riding behind in them in another motorcycle, I am sure these people know how to ride safely and have been doing it for enough time to know how to ride a motorcycle.
Unfortunately, this girl (in her early 20's) was too kind hearted towards animals and didn't think about the repercussions that this would cause on others on the highway.

I remember sitting in the passenger seat of a car driven by my brother in-laws sister. We were going east on the 401 and she was trying to get over for the exit ramp that was coming up. Unfortunately through a combination of heavy traffic and she being too timid to start moving across she wasn't being allowed in. She then slowed and slowed and slowed to the point where we STOPPED! The fear I had in me was unbearable. I yelled at her NOT TO STOP ON THE 401.
This is a highway and while it might be nice to stop for an animal you have to realize that stopping on any highway is a risk to yourself and others on the road. The reasons for stopping had better be good. I'm not sure stopping for a bird or because you didn't make your exit ramp qualifies.

lol wut? a BLIND turn on a high way? how is that even possible?!
I would hate to hit any animal, hitting a duck would destroy the bumper :(

I'm on that road every weekend going to the cottage, it is a blind corner. With thick traffic on a Sunday night coming home from cottage country you do not have time to react. You're doing 100/kmh going up a slight hill into the blind corner. 500 feet further and you've got 2 lanes merging into the right hand one. Everybody stays in the left. And this woman stopped dead in the left hand lane and got out of her car to help some ducks go by. Poor judgement? Ya think?
And to all of you blowing "they must have been going too fast" or "following to close", read the article(s) again. She was out of the car. Stopped for a bit in the left hand lane in a blind corner. One car rolling beside the bikes in the turn and they had no where to go. She should be jailed.

I still put the majority of blame on the motorcycles... imagine if there was no car stopped for ducks... but a fallen tree instead.. Blind corner? slow the fek down.

Signs need to be posted by the municipality. The whole reason we HAVE road signs in the first place is to make the roads safer.
