View Full Version : There's definitely something wrong with my car...

I put my car in first gear and then when I shift to second gear when pressing the clutch, I hear a noise, like a clunking noise. I even hear it when I do an engine break. Any idea what it is? I'm taking my car in tomorrow. I just want to know if it's safe to drive.
Thanks.

how many kms are on your car? could be your clutch plate.

Does it sound like a creaking noise?

No, more like clunking like the engine's falling apart everytime I shift.

sounds like its just coming out of gear, and I wouldnt engine brake, tell me this how much is a new clutch parts and service? how much are brakes? i think one out weighs the other in price if you have to change it.

I paid $830 for a stage 1 exedy and install. It could be just the pressure plate not fully disengaging. The shop told me that's probably what was wrong with mine. Does it do it in all gears or just second?

could possibly be a motor mount as it is very unlikely it is your clutch but lets diagnose that first. Get into 6th gear at 90kmph and go full throttle, if the tach jumps and the speed doesn't your clutch is slipping. If it doesn't budge your clutch is fine, a clutch is more likely to slip in 6th gear under load than it is in first/second.
If it isn't the clutch and isn't something like a lose motor mount you could have a syncro failure or something with the transmission. It could be as simple as adjusting the shifter cable alignment or as much as rebuilding the transmission. In either case, the fewer the miles the better.
What happens if you go first to third?

update, so halfway to my trip to the dealer, the noise has dissipated and I cannot re-create the sound, tech closed it as NFF.. I wonder what it is? I'll go to Jimmy later on this week and see if he can find anything. I'm still wondering what the sound is.
I seem to agree with UOU, it sounds like a MM failing. I don't know..

Check your transmission fluid level to make sure it hasn't dropped. are you stock or mt90?

I'm still on stock fluid, I'll check it later on today.. Thanks. Should I change to MT90? Is it better?

i liked it but some people found it made a slightly less smooth change in colder weather

I'd run that ford synthetic fluid (forget the model #) rather than MT90 to avoid the annoying LSD whine
btw my transmission clunks a lot... same with weatherB as mentioned in another thread ... (2007 MS3s)

The transmission on mines a bit clunky, but not bad.. although the clunkyness has gone away somewhat since I put in the CP-E REM.
I was thinking of changing the transmission fluid at some point this summer. Is MT90 the most common one MS3 owners are using?

MT-90 is great in the summer. Second gear shifts are much smoother. However, in the winter you need to wait a good 10-15 minutes in the winter for the oil to warm up. I do a lot of second to fourth gear shifts to avoid grinds during that time frame. I recommend MT-90 definately.

ive had a similar problem 3 times now.
first was ice in the motor mount (had just washed the car). seeing how its summer, we can rule that out.
second was a blown up strut mount. the strut itself wasnt attached to anything, so when i shifted, the strut would move, and hit the tower, thus causing the clunking noise.
thirdly, i was getting a clunking noise when moving from a stop, and shifting gears. it ended up being my hid ballast which had fallen next to the frame and alternator pulley. whenever i shifted, the engine moved, and smacked the alternator pulley against the ballast....

the noise is back.. I can't figure out what it is..
Doing an engine brake on 1st to 4th gears, haven't tried doing it on 5th or 6th as I was only in the city, grinding sound. :(
I will check again tonight when I get home.
I wonder who my neighbour is from TM3.. oh Alhope, I might give you a shout to be my second ear tonight just in case I can't figure it out.

Yup. It was a rock. Saw it. And the sound is completely gone. Lol.
I had them lubes my shifter cables as well as it looked dry. So. Yeah, back to boosting. :P
