Indeed but if you were to live anywhere near the cities or anywhere near that, the house prices out in BC are even more outrageous than in Ontario.

Ya this is bs, they were saying on the news last night if you bought things like smoke detectors and fire extinguishers you would end up paying around $5-6 eco fee on those type of items.

F*** bs.. something I can see why like batteries because of the complex procedure to recycle them.. but some of the other stuff.. is utter bs

For those that didn't read up..

http://www.makethedrop.ca/sites/default/files/StewardFees.pdf

Yes, $6 more for an extinguisher, but not many will be buying a 5.5+ pound extinguisher every day..
And yes, $7 per 1000 inhalers
and $0.12 for every 1000 pills.

I for one could care less, its pennies on the dollar for most items, and I'll more than make up for it if I adopt the "if its yellow let it mellow, and its brown flush it down" rule. :)

The fees range from a few cents for some products to up to $6.66 for fire extinguishers weighing more than 5.5 pounds.

"Some retailers are charging the fees that are set for different products at different rates. Some retailers are not. It's entirely up to them."

"Not one penny of this ends up as a tax in the government's pockets," said Environment Minister John Gerretsen.

Instead, those funds go towards ensuring those materials don't end up in the landfill, he said.

I guess it's a nice idea... but yo not tell anyone until after it's done.... **** that

the govt will just squander the fees and program like they have for electronics (https://www.rco.on.ca/news?news_id=143&uniq_id=1017)

it's a tax grab no matter which way you sugar coat it.

The real problem with this kind of fee is that there is no incentive to reduce the environmental impact of products.

A company that produces something in a more environmentally friendly way probably has increased costs... which get passed along to the consumer. And then the eccofee is tacked on top of that, making the product even more expensive than its competitors. So there is no incentive at all to reduce a product's environmental impact.

So we end up paying more to dispose of waste that doesn't need to be there in the first place.

What's worse, you will get people concluding that since they pay the fee they can pollute all they want!
