I just sold my house, so I've been looking for a place to rent for when I'm kicked out of here. I've never rented a home before and the rental applications seem fairly intrusive with the amount of personal information they want you to give up.
I already know that I'm not legally required to give them my SIN number. However they're asking me for my bank account info and I don't feel comfortable giving that to them either. Does anyone know if they can legally deny my application if I refuse to give them my banking information?

Many renters want credit checks to see how reliable you are in paying. I don't think you should be giving out your bank account information. You almost can't prove legally them denying your application, they just have to not like you to not rent to you, just like you have the right to not rent a place you don't like.

Wow, Id never give them my bank account info.
Are you filling out an application form from a building property management?

Bank account info like a account number? What can they really do with that? I don't give out my sin but I am ok with bank account information and yes the rental application is intrusive. If you rent a place and smash it all to hell and leave, they need a way to track you down.

maybe it's for the automatic rent withdrawal when you do get the place...
just ask what it's for.. lol

When I rent an appt, they asked my SIN and my pay stab, I provided. Why take it personal, lol then later, i set the automatic withdraw and sign the PAC to withdraw rent from my account too

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to talk to a couple of the managers to see what they do with the account info. It's illegal for the bank to give them my personal information so I'm not sure why they'd want it.
