Oh and I understand about watermarking photos to get your name out there and attract publicity to your business. Unfortunately most of the watermarks I see use elaborate script type fonts that are totally illegible to all except those who made them :\

These pics are amazing, as per usual. How did you do #7? I just gotta know
Also, can you pm me where those were all done? They would make for amazing texture samples and reference pics for an upcoming project.

thanks man!
#7 is just a flashlight tied to a string, spun around in a circle :D
The underground shots were taken inside the Cote St. Paul Collector sewer in Montreal, and the building ones are inside the old Geo W. Reed factory, also in Montreal.

Love the creativity. It must stink down there though.

haha you'd be surprised, it doesnt actually smell bad at all. This one was an actual sewer, so a little more "fresh" than a storm drain or utility tunnel, but still nothing like you'd really expect. The prevailing odor is of soap and dampness more than anything else....sure you see the occasional tampon, condom or piece of toilet paper, but probably 98% of the liquid content is wastewater from showers, dishwashers and laundry machines. Like I said before....soapy.
I explored a sewer in toronto once and saw a side pipe start to gush blood for about 30 seconds, but thats pretty rare. Was likely an upstream connection to a butcher shop, slaughter house or hospital (I convinced myself it was one of the first 2).
Its not a hobby for the claustrophobic or faint of heart, but its a hell of a rush and makes for some interesting photographs. Every one of these underground spaces is unique and requires a different setup to capture it properly. I love long exposure photography, and these places are great practice. They're entirely pitch black and the only light you see is from flashlights or flashes I brought with me. Beats the hell out of boring studio work in front of a white backdrop :D

its actually quite safe...MOL doesnt even require a harness until you step outside the areas w/ railings. Going to the crows-nest or climbing on the jib requires a harness, though a LOT of the pro's don't actually wear them.
I'm no fan of heights, but once you're up there, its the last thing on your mind. This one was only around 36~ floors...the one I climbed at the Absolute towers (Some call them the Marylin Monroes) was 56 stories.
I would have loved to have been in Dubai when they were building the Burj Dubai....now THAT would have been fun!

Dave, you should do an old and new comparison.
Take the same pic with each camera, same settings, and see how they look. (And post em up too!)
Also, what are you doing with the old camera?
here's a few of my car taken April last year. wife got out of the car and just snapped these real quick before going inside the house.

Not a bad idea. I shall try that next time I shoot.
The old one is now a spare between Lyndsey and I. More for her when she goes to weddings and such as she has been doing those with one cam.
You can pick a Rebel XT up used from Henry's for like 150 bucks these days.

This is best thread I could think of to put this in.
I use a program (dorgem) to keep an eye on my apartment with a webcam (I like to see if my landlords come in) and have pics just in case (they are stored offsite as well).
I've started looking at time lapse lately and finally got the software to work with my dslr so that is my next attempt, but I put my webcam in my window for the day and this is what I came up with :)

Its a cheap logitech webcam so be easy, my slr should get better pics.

nice video....would look neat if you sped it up and compressed all of that into like 20-30 seconds.
Why are you so worried your landlord is coming into your apartment??

@Slade: Nicely done! :) I just had an idea.. Since April is just around the corner and I know you've probably seen those scary pranks on the internet where you stare at something for a few seconds then this image from the Exorcist suddenly pops out. :) Maybe you can try to insert that at the end or something to scare people. :chuckle
Would be a good practical joke IMO. :thumbsup

its not me, but I do know those guys.
We dont go out together, but we frequent many of the same places.
I fancy myself a touch more discrete than them. Those guys (and a few others I wont mention) are part of the reason why so many builders in TO alarm roof hatches and lock up their cranes at night.
Oh well, some of the best times I've had were during the day with permission from the crane company. Its always a thrill going at night, but the goal is usually to NOT have the construction company find out lol. Kinda tough when your pictures are all over the newspaper. Looks like I wont be going out for a little while :p
n00bMeiSter
01-31-2012, 06:09 PM
^ Yeah, I had a feeling that publicity like that might ruin things for others.
If someone got hurt doing that at night, or died from falling off a crane, it's the construction company that is liable because they didn't have good enough security.
Personally, I think that if you trespass somewhere and get hurt or die, it's your own damned fault for going in there. It's stupid how we have to protect the stupid people from themselves, and to do so, all the normal people get screwed.

amazing use of light and filters! been wanting to try these. Did you use led tubes to cast the green trails?
I saw your sauga rooftop/skyline shots. I drive there everyday (confederation) and WANTED to shoot from that spot! You're lucky.

No one contacted me on behalf of PAS, no link to the site or the fanpage in the facebook post.
I didn't ask them to remove it but I did talk about it on my personal Facebook about how I wasn't really pleased with the addition of such a huge watermark without PAS contacting me (they know who I am).
The owner of the car thinks I am being crazy and has declined working with me in the future.

I think you have a right to be upset.
It's like a band releasing an album on smaller label (no offence), and then a major label deciding to release it on theirs. The major would need permission from both the band and the small label, and would need to work with them in order to make it happen.

You def have a right to be upset. It's happened to me before, luckily when I contacted the guy about it he took it down. Seems to me if the owner treats the situation that way, he may not be someone worth working with.
I think you have a right to be upset, it is your photo. They did somewhat give you credit by leaving your watermark on it..but I would still be cheesed that they would take it without asking and put their own huge logo on it

05-05-2012, 12:35 PM
you're absolutely right to be upset....doesnt matter if they kept your watermark, it's your photo and you're the copyright holder. They need to seek your permission before using it, and you have every right to demand compensation, or at least make them take it down. Even if you dont want any $$$, you should at least approach them and let it be known you're upset and they can't just do that. If they think they can get away with it, they'll keep doing it. The driver who's upset at you for asserting your rights is a moron....I wouldnt let his foolishness bother you.

The owner of the car feels my complaints (privately) tainted his excitement of it getting shared. What he doesn't understand is as excited as he was is as disappointed as I was to not be given any credit (really).
Good to know I am not crazy.
Further disappointing is that I have dealt with PAS before so I have no idea why they didn't shoot me a message or PM.

You're the creator of the work, you should AT LEAST be recognized by a link or "via" on Facebook. Hell that's what FB is all about, there's no reason not to do it. I know FB pages are all about sharing photos from others to your own audience, but at least link to where it came from.
Secondly, the huge watermarking of your work is completely unnecessary. Their branding is done on their own FB page, the image obviously comes from someone else, there is no reason to add such a huge watermark unless it was a pre-conceived partnership between themselves and you. Given that the opposite is true, its completely unnecessary.
Resolution - its not worth getting into a stink over it with the car owner. Drop the issue with him and probably don't do further shoots with him. Send a polite email to PAS stating you would have expected at least a link of recognition and explaining your stance (heh) about the watermark issue. Again its probably not worth raising a huge stink over but at least let them know your opinion.

Is this (Sukh)Paul's car? If this is the 700whp Skyline I'm thinking of, it belongs to a good buddy of mine. Cool car, the owner's a great guy.

It is, he is a good guy I have been a fan of his car for awhile so I was glad to shoot it.
My issue isn't with Paul (though I found it weird he didn't want to work with me again)
It is more with PAS.

If you can't look at that pic and tell it belongs to your "good buddy" then I'd say you guys aren't that close, or you're blind.

They should have contacted you for permission first, though they did retain your copyright information, unless you stated on your website that people can use the picture as long as they keep your watermark, PAS should have asked you for permission first to use the photo. Especially when they're going to slap their own logo on top of it and use it for promotional purposes.

Haven't seen that car in over a year, didn't completely look like that the last time I saw it. Perhaps try f*cking off. ;)

Hi Guys,
I'm the owner of the R32, I have nothing against Dave, I told him that I don't like drama, and prefer to keep away from any issues as this isn't business for me and is just a hobby. That's the only reason why I wouldn't want to work with him, his work is amazing and I was sorry to even consider telling him this. No one wants to lose a good photographer friend, but we'll still be friends. Pas Nation is kind of like Cardomain or Ride judge where you show off your ride, and from time to time they take pics from there to put up as rides of the day. This shoot was done for fun, so that I can have some photos I can have for memory sake and show off my car. I have told Dave that he does have a right on being angry, and that his girlfriend and him should focus their anger to the right channels. I gave credit to Dave when I found out that my car was on their website. They didn't tell me that they chose my car as a ride of the day either. It was brought to my attention by a friend. I told Dave he could do as he wishes with the pics he took from that night, as it would great for his portfolio as well. Dave I'm still gonna say that your shots are amazing, but most of my auto enthusiast friends wouldn't like this sort of dark cloud over their cars as well. I hope you can understand Dave I have nothing but the utmost respect for you bro. We'll see each other around.
BTW for those who think RTenthusiast isn't a friend he is, he just hasn't seen the car this season so he didn't realize the changes done to it.

And to RTEnthusiasts point.

Paul's car changes all the time.
Finally Paul it is nothing personal, I am still figuring out the correct course of action in situations like this hence why I asked the question here in the first place.
I also asked the question from the flip side (as a publisher) on my facebook some time ago which is part of the reason I am investigating.

Composition maybe? It's too "centered for my taste".
Terapro: yeah, they had models there for you to shoot. It gets a little bit crowded though.
Took home some triggers, memory cards, tripod. Wanted some strobes but I think I like Elinchrom's better which Henry's don't carry.

Composition, lighting, grayscale and the amount black if possible. Wanted to capture the detail on the bottle. Hence the black and white.

Composition, lighting, grayscale and the amount black if possible. Wanted to capture the detail on the bottle. Hence the black and white.
I think it's great, but could be better.
If you're going for commercial / magazines and going for somewhat bokeh, I'd focus on the bottle but at the same time capture the event that's happening in the back. Like a dude fixing his tie facing his back towards the camera. Bottle would have to be way off centre, probably 1/3 from bottom up and anywhere on the sides for that shooting landscape / portrait.
Also if you're looking for detail of the bottle ( I don't have EXIF viewer installed), do atleast 2.0/2.8 . f1.4 is too shallow and you're only focused on the face of the bottle.
Clean the bottle and shine it. There's dust on it ( you can probably clone/ heal the specks out but if this were a billboard and you're shooting Hasseys then you have to redo :P) Also the top right corner of the bottle has oil fingerprint marks? Take out the straw thingy, a lot of perfume / cologne ads that want to detail their product remove the inside obstructions that block the name of the bottle.
For lighting, if it weren't for the sides then the whole bottle would be bland. Have a strip box non gridded (or softbox depending how far you leave it back) and have it shine on the spray part or the name , have it diagonally or vertically. Products like this love to have accent lighting.
Blacks and grays are well.
After all that, sharpen it and you'll have yourself a nice looking bottle.

Here are some from a recent flight I took, courtesy of Mississauga Life magazine ( www.mississaugalife.ca ). We were getting aerial shots of the city for use in upcoming issues, which meant chartering a Cesna and taking to the skies. After getting rained out for 2 weekends in a row, the forecast allowed us to go up last Sunday morning during a brief stint of clear skies. I'd never shot from a plane before, and god is it a tiring experience, especially with the door removed. For starters it's loud as ****, and you cant keep your headphones on while juggling 3 camera bodies and 5 lenses. Sticking your head out the door to clear the strut / wheel / wings is a vicious shock to the senses. The wash from the engine blasts you in the face, making it impossible to breath, let alone compose your shots. I found myself taking a few deep breaths then leaning out the door and snapping off a few shots before coming in, gasping for air. These are just a few of the 800 pictures I took that day, the best of which were given to the magazine. Keep in eye out in their next issue, hopefully some will make the cut :D

Here are some from a recent flight I took, courtesy of Mississauga Life magazine ( www.mississaugalife.ca ). Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
Little boxes, little boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

So I read/glanced through a 200page PDF to try and get back into photography a bit and learn some new stuff.
First try at this HDR stuff.
Mounted my camera on my tripod on the balcony, hooked it up to my desktop (so I wouldnt move it all all when changing settings) opened my software and gave it a go. 3 pics each stepping at 2EV. Then used photomatrix to smush them and final touch up.
This is aimed at downtown Burlington.

dont fall into the HDR trap....there are VERY few scenes that, if exposed properly, actually require or benefit from such a drastically increased tonal range. This scene in particular didnt need it...few landscapes do. you can achieve all you need to make that shot look great with 1 RAW file and about 2 minutes in photoshop.
That being said, your attempt isnt bad (I've seen MUCH worse HDR). It seems a tad over-exposed and you've lost detail in the trees, but there's minimal vignetting in the sky and it doesnt look like clown vomit. I wont tell you not to play around with HDR, because I myself wasted a good couple of months tinkering with it and thinking it was the hottest thing since sliced bread. I will however caution you to take a step back and look critically at the end result. Ask yourself if it actually looks good, or if the original shot, with a bit of tweaking, looks better. I'm sure that with time you'll realize what so many others have - there are very few instances in which HDR actualy compliments your photos. I have friends who shoot nothing but HDR, and I garuantee that 10yrs from now they're going to look back and say "wtf was I thinking!" There are some people out there who can use it with great success, but most of them strive to be subtle. In my opinion anyway, the best HDR shots are the ones where you cant actually tell it's an HDR.
Regardless, glad to see you're at least shooting and trying new things. photography is all about experimentation and playing around to develop your own style. keep it up!

Thanks! I was never really a fan of HDR, just with my view and the coloring in the sky last night thought it might be worth a try :)
Here is the original pic before changing anything, it looks a lot different then the HDR one.
http://i50.tinypic.com/2mnqd6o.jpg
I'm using an Olympus e620 with 2 kit lenses (this one shot with 14-42), that's most likely the reason for loosing detail.

So I finished some of my shoot and want to share my experience with a wonderful model!
Travelled with her to the bluffs to get some nice shots.. At first she was scared to go down really steep sandy slippery slopes to get to the cliff part but she was brave and made me carry her bags.
Afterwards we decided to go up north a bit for the sun to go down and grab a bite then go to King City area.
In the end I got some pretty good shots to replace some of my work.
Here's 2 sample pics. I'm going to upload better quality on my website later on tonight.

That's what creeper lens are for. LOL
Thanks pare. It's cuz of you and Kev who got me back into it. :chuckle
That's good, keep shooting bud.
Believe it or not though, I'm shooting with the 50mm for street so I'm close to everyone's face. Some people ask you, some people don't mind. What I do is. I eye contact after so there's no "did you just take my picture?" after.

#1 the veins look cool for some weird reason
#2 must resist urge to to troll phil lol
nice pictures nonetheless. so is it the camera or lenses that make more of the difference, relatively speaking (would one spend less money on body and more on lens or vice versa?). i notice you guys sometimes post what lenses you used for particular pictures

Both will make a difference, but having a good lens will take you further than just having a good body. Also, lenses last longer, whereas bodys are constantly refreshed/upgraded.

the lens makes soooooo much more of a difference than anything. In order of importance I'd rank things 1) the photographer (and his control over lighting, composition, etc...) 2) the lens 3) the body.
I can put my $2400 14-24 f2.8 onto the old beat up D70 or 35mm F90X and take pictures that are just as good as with my D700. The only real difference is the resolution at which they're produced, but for 98% of photographers even 6mp is more than ample. I've got 30"x40" prints from the D70 and the quality is more than acceptable for all but the snootiest of MF/LF photogs.

Here's some from a camping trip in algonquin park over the long weekend. It was a 4 day canoe trip that took us from Grand lake to the Barron Canyon. Absolutely incredible - definitely the most scenic area of the park.

Lachlan, I love your photos dude. Been browsing your website and it makes me wish I could afford to get into photography. I especially like the abandoned 401 rest station. Every time I drove by it, it reminded me of Jurassic Park haha.
