Ok so just last night on the way home from hanging out with friends i see my check engine light is turned on. i honestly do not feel any changes in the cars performance, except it is hard to accelerate from a complete stop wen i have the AC on. i dont know if thats normal cuz normally i dont drive with my AC on. and just last night right after i started my car i heard a weird squeeking sound for a second then like 10 seconds later i heard another 1 second squeeking come from somewhere. not sure where but i havnt heard it again since. i read in another thread that it could have something to do with my belt's tension. i checked and it seemed pretty tight. so you all know its a 2006 Sport GT 5 speed with 90,000 kms. i do drive it pretty hard at times, but not always like 20% of the time at most.
this is the first time ive ever had a problem with this car.
Having the A/C will make the car more hesitent...
As for the check engine light you need to borrow someone scan tool and check the code that your getting...if you lived closer i would hook my scan tool up to see what code your getting

check your gas cap. they can be faulty and come loose, causes your engine light to come on. take off the gas cap and put it back on tight, see if that helps. my car has this problem.

i just went to do that and the light was gone the second time i turned it on after tightening the gas cap but then after 5 seconds it came back on. i also have a Borla cat back exhaust, could that cause the light to turn on? ive had the exhaust on for about 3 and a half months.

I just did that too, turned it on and off a number of times. each time was different, like one time i had it in neutral, another i was in gear, another i had it in gear but not handbrake and again with it in neutral and no handbrake. a few times it would just disappear for a few seconds after it turns on but then comes back on. I even drove it around for a bit thinking itll go away after 1 or 2 kms
Had this happen to me recently as well. Right after getting it rustproofed and the car dropped off at my work (I didnt get a chance to drive it etc until after work when I noticed it on)... It was the first time it happened and I was going crazy as it was also my first ever problem (couldnt stop thinking about it as it bothered me lol). I even called them to advise that my light was turned on from it but they said "oh it was on before you dropped it off and we took note of that", which was a complete lie as I notice these little things IMMEDIATELY before I even start driving. Anyways, so I tried everything including on/off, tightening the gas cap, etc.... finally took the dive and unhooked the battery for 15 mins with the lights on to drain the thing. Put it back on and it was gone.
Now fast forward a month later, a few days after filling up, my light turned on and once again I went nuts. Tried everything again (tightening cap, on/off etc.) but nothing helped. Luckily, I was due for an oil change so when I brought it in to my mechanic and they pulled it up and cleared it, it was determined to be a gas cap issue. Despite tightening the cap when the light is already on and stuff, I guess it never fixes it for me. So pretty much don't stress out. As long as you take good care of the car its likely something small. In this case now, I always tighten my cap 10 clicks lol...

i just had an oil change about 600 kms ago. and filled up 80 kms ago and it only turned on last night wen it was at 75 kms since i filled up so could it really be the gas cap? wat makes it so ineffective anyways?

It's that it's ineffective but alot of poeple don't tighting the gas cap..when tighting the gas cap you should at least turn it 3 clicks
Ask part source if they will let you use their scan tool to check the code..I'm pretty sure they loan out tools..i know they loaned me a strut compresser

Mine came on a little while ago, so I checked the gas cap and drove for a day or so.. still on.. thing is, I started to notice the car was down on power or just didn't feel right, so called the dealer and they told me to check the gas cap and drive for a day or two and call them if it didn't go away.. it didn't.
Took the car in and it turns out the CEL was for a cylinder 3 misfire due to a blown ignition coil.
Call the dealer.
... anyways about how much would it cost to rent ou the scan tool?
It should be free...When i rented the strut compressor all i did was put deposit down and then when i brought it back they gave me the deposit back

i donno if my warrenty is up, i might have a few things under warrenty until 100,000 kms but i donno of the gas cap. if it is the gas cap and since it is a recall, does that mean they will replace i for free no matter how many kms the car has?
is there anyone in the woodbridge/maple area with a scan tool?

i think they will only cover it if your still under warrenty, otherwise you pay. even so its not that expensive. if you can get your hands on a scanner try it first. goodluck buddy.

ya now after driving for a day, the light turns on and off randomly. im pretty sure its something small since there is no difference in performance and the fact that it turns on and off on its own. or could it still be something big? anyone know how much i need to deposit (a range) to rent out the scanner?

I thought partsource scanned the codes for free. JohnyGT has a code reader, and Street Performance and Speedtech (on Silverstar) will scan the code(s) for you.

CEL is tied soley to the emission control system. Gas caps cause problems because part of OBDII is that the fuel system must not release any vapors - loose or faulty cap is the number one cause of this. As far as the computer resetting itself - you must go through a number of "good" driving cycles before it will clear itself - that means starting the car, driving at various speeds for a certain length of time, and turning the car off. Just turning the key on & off or starting and stopping the car in the driveway doesn't count as a cycle. But yeah, if you want to know what is is for certain, get it scanned.

If it feels like your engine is hesitating or struggling could be a misfire, but then again you would need to get a scanner to check that out

i got my car scanned and the code is P0138. the car isnt eating a lot more gas then it needs to but over time i have noticed that it went from 9.5/100km to 9.8/100km and now im only getting about 500kms on a full tank, donno if thats normal or cuz of the way i drive, might be my driving. sometimes it feels like the car doesnt have enough power to accelerate quickly from a complete stop but that happens rarely. the code was cleared on thursday and hasnt come back yet. also my radiator fan isnt spinning, i checked that once when i got home from work. donno if that its supposed to be on all the time once the engine warms up but it wasnt spinning at all after a 30 min drive on the 400 on a hot day.

Replace the rear O2 sensor (oxygen sensor)
Within 500km it will be back on

The rear sensor you mean by the bottom one right? im getting it replaced for $200 for the part and labour, that a fair price? also the guy told me that its recommended to get the both sensors replaced at the same time, but i said no thanks. should i have taken the that offer? it would have costed me $560 for the parts and labour without taxes. he said the top sensor costs about 220 for the part alone. so right now im only replacing the bottom (rear) sensor cuz thats what the code is leading to.
i just want to know from you guys, should i get both at the same time or did i make the right choice and just replace the one causing the problem?
btw thanks to all of you who helped!

The rear sensor is the one farthest downstream in the exhaust from your engine. $200 is a little pricey to me, but I think that might be because the 06+ sensors are more expensive than the 04-05 sensors.. I think I paid about $65 CDN including shipping and taxes for a Denso, and less than $25 to have it installed. Check out online sources like Rockauto.com or oxygensensors.com.
It’s absolutely not necessary to change the first O2 sensor. You have a current leak, most like between heating element and sensor itself, maybe it's inside of the sensor or even it’s just a bad harness insulation near from sensor.

Last week I had my CEL come on, and after I removed the gas cap and put it back, the light was gone.
Same thing today. Both times, it came on only 2 days after i pumped gas.
What has to be done to fix this? Ask the dealer to replace the cap?
