A 16" OEM or equivalent rim will fit on the GT. To be certain your set will fit, we need to know the rim offset and tire size of the winter tire.
Yes, I have 16" winter rims and tires, but what S.F.W. said is needed to know if what you are looking at will fit for sure.

trying to fit a 2008 Mazda3 GT OEM with 205/50/R17
winter tires are 205/55/R16 - and previously used on a 2006 Mazda 3 GS.
are these what you are talking about? or the bolt size etc on the rims (which i've been reading on the internet) i was thinking if its same mazda 3

These will fit fine.
sorry SFW, just wanted to make sure if I understood your reply, so you're saying that my winters of 205/55/R16 will fit on my friend's 2008 GT which has standards of 205/50/R17?

yes, many members, myself included move down to a 205/55/16 for the winter, from the stock 17" .

Thing to remember, is that even though you go from a 17" to a 16" rim size, the overall diameter of tire remains the same (assuming 205/50/17 and 205/55/16).

Excellent, thanks for clarifying this. This is exactly the scenario I am looking at, putting 16 inch snow tires on a 2008 Mazda GT that wears 17 inch OEM's normally.
I was a little concerned about the potential difference in circumference between the two sizes throwing out my speedometer or gear ratios or something, but some math cleared that up:
OEM Wheels: P205 50R17 - 17 inches is 431.8mm
Snow Wheels: P205 55R16 - 16 inches is 406.4mm
OEM Diameter = 431.8 + ((205 * 0.5) * 2) = 636.8mm
Snow Diameter = 406.4 + ((205 * 0.55) * 2) = 631.9mm
OEM Circumference = 636.8mm * Pi = 2000.57mm
Snow Circumference = 631.9mm * Pi = 1985.17mm
That means a 15.4mm difference in circumference, or 99.2%. If the speedo said 100km/h you'd actually be traveling 99.2km/h on snow tires. That's close enough for me, assuming that math is correct.
