View Full Version : Auto Tranny Dying?
So, like a couple of you guys, I think I'm having troubles with my automatic transmission (2006 Mazea 3). I did a search and I have many of the same symptoms but I also have a few more that dont seem to be covered.
I'll keep it short and to the point. The problems I'm having are:
1) Shift shock (1-2 rough gear changes)
2) Intermittent vibrations at idle
3) A "shake" when you let off the throttle (kind of a puttering feeling)
4) A thump when changing from 1-2 using manual mode at redline @ WOT
5) Another driver who drives my car reported that one time at the stop lights, she was taking off from the lights, applied throttle but car didnt move and revs went up. Let off the gas and tried again and the car moved this time. I never experienced this and I drive the car 99% of the time so I dont know if its as a result of the tranny or not.
Any comments would be appreciated. :)

1) Normal - Lots of people have this. There's an 'update' that may or may not be covered under your warranty still

2) Normal - A lot of people experience this as well

3) Not sure - Maybe someone else can chime in on this one......
4) Normal - How are you redlining in 1st and 2nd gear?? I'd say this is normal just because it's asking for your tranny to explode lol... keep in mind it's not a real manual tranny, even though it may be idiot proof (lol) you can still do some damage if you're not careful. I'm surprised your car didn't override that.... :\
5) Could be driver error?
Doesn't sound like your tranny is "dying", but you might need to get some things looked at...

4) I race my car in AutoX so thats why I'm redlining 1st gear. It doesnt go up to the rev limiter, it just touches redline.

ahhh gotcha. Yeah it might just need the upgrade to fix that... but that doesn't always fix this issue though, mine is back again but I've learned to live with it... I think most mazdas might be like that anyway, I drove a CX-7 as a loaner car and it had the same jump when changing gears... weird

3) and 4) are signs of a blown passenger-side engine mount.
Is there a way to visually check the engine mount myself? Or is it hidden somewhere?

below the coolant reservoir tank you'll see the passenger-side motor mount. check that area of the fender for any signs of a leak. the mount is hydraulic and is filled with fluid; however, over time, the rubber becomes brittle and cracks spilling all the fluid.

If you are standing in front of the car it is just to the right of the coolant bottle, it is attached to the side of the engine and is made of aluminum and has a big round rubber piece in it. It usuallybreakes and the fluid leaks out of the rubber. Check for signs of staining down the side of the engine below the mount or check the rubber where it attaches to the aluminum part to see if it is broken.
Hope that helps

shift shock problem is easily fixed with an ECU flash at the dealer
problem 2-4 are indicative of a blown motor mount as others have said
everything else seems fine, so just change the tranny fluid just in case
