Hey Guys,

So i'll try and be as detailed as possible, here goes...

I just bought a set of MazdaSpeed 3 wheels that came off a 2009. The rim and tire are in almost perfect condition BUT i bought them knowing full well that they were almost completely discolored. This really isn't a huge problem because i had plans of getting them powder coated this fall but i wanted to know if anyone has a solution to this problem. The guy i bought them from sprayed an acid based wheel cleaner on to the rim when the wheel was still hot now 2/4 rims have numerous black marks on them and almost look like they took away from the clear coat (which they probably did)...i know the possibilities of getting these back to normal are slim and none but hoping someone has had some luck with a cleaning agent for a similar problem.

This is the first time I've heard of a wheel cleaner actually ruining the rim. Once you get them powder coated, you won't even remember how they looked before. What color if you don't mind me asking?

we use acid on wheels at work hot or cold and have NEVER seen it destroy the rims. Unless their is chrome then yes it will get destroyed. Do you have a picture of how bad it is? You MAY have an option or 2. Try and get the rim buffed or if you are daring enough try using HIGH gritt sand paper and wet sand them. Their is a chance it MAY work

Hey guys...again i'm not completely sure about the whole story of how these wheels were ruined. I got them for a steal of a price so I really didn't ask many questions. I plan to get them powdercoated a gun metal or just try and uniform the factory look of them again. here are a few pics i snapped - this is the worst wheel...

Looks like they are COATED in brake dust and never been cleaned.

I can vouch for this guy - I helped him with the tires. It looks like they've never been cleaned but whatever the previous owner used did not know what he was doing. There are black spots that can probably be removed with some good sandpaper or buffing...

+1

That is what it looks like for sure. Caked on brake dust. Looks like it has been cleaned in over a year. This is just sad to see. It reminds me of all the bimmers I see with the "dark" rims on the front wheels!

Just get them powdercoated. They will look a hell of alot better!

Update:

Today I tried some good ol' fashion goo gone and that didn't work.
I also tried the Mothers Aluminum Polish that was recommended on some forums and that didn't work.

I think they are ruined for good until they are given a powder coating for Christmas.

if its brake dust.. try some Oven Cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes.. than wipe off.. it took off my baked on brake dust from my previous wheels

mothers mag and polish. try in a small area first to test for discoloration. that stuff works wonders.

Sorry guys - not a matter of cleaning harder. The previous owner of the rims stripped off the clear coat finish with an acid based wheel cleaner when the wheel was still hot and the acid tarnished the finish of all the rims. The solution had nothing to do with elbow grease or any cleaning agent rather a trip to a local powder-coater. I'm happy with the outcome and the final product is on this thread:
