Air Conditioning problem

Hi folks

I have a 2004 GT and noticed this summer that the A/C has been acting up. I'll turn it on and it works for some time, then the green light on the button goes out and you can feel the air is no longer cool. Turning off the A/C and back on does nothing. It will come back on by itself after some time, anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute or two, then resume cooling the air.

A few questions:

1. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
2. Does anyone know if the A/C has some sort of over heating protection where is shuts itself off (just a thought)?
3. Does anyone know if an extended warranty might cover this?

2: possible refridgerant leak? maybe low pressure switch shutting off the system? have you had it tested?
3: maybe if you're the original owner who purchased one 6yrs ago
