Apparently, there is a wire I need to tap into so the nav knows when the car is in reverse. has anyone tapped into the MZ3's reverse circuit somewhere? If you have a schematic or diagram that would be fun as well.

You only need to do this for a backup camera. Otherwise not needed.

That was my initial thought as well - aka hook it up to a rear tail light. However, the install manual says my direction will be "adversely affected", and my position "mis-aligned".
Truth or bulls#$%t?

I'd say BS... This is why you connected the VSS wire

The only thing that the vss and the reverse wire do is so that when you go through a tunnel for example and you lose all satellites the vss wire will keep you on track alot better and reconect the satelites alot faster because the system will know where you are. as for the reverse signal only good for the back up camera. I usually tap the reverse wire in to the wiring on the roof were the wires come in from the hatch or if its a sedan on the passenger side where the harness comes in from the trunk.
the hatch is a little easier to match up the colours with as you pull the cover off for replacing the bulb get the colour code of the wire for the positive side then carefully slightly pull down the headliner at the back were the main harness comes in. you should be able to match up the wiring colour there. Then just tap it
For the sedan same concept just you have to remove the push in clips and match up the colour codes just be careful not to lose the clips. They are not that cheap to replace
