Well, I came across a deal I couldn't pass up:
1997 Audi A6 Quattro Wagon:
Carbon Grey on filthy tan leather
Bose premium sound package (7 million speakers and a built in sub woofer)
2.8 V6 Auto
Mint body - needs buffing
137,000 km
Everything electrical works perfect.
winter package (heated seats, headlight washer nozzles, etc.)
Drives like new.
certified / e-tested / new all-season tires
One owner 70 year old
So that's my winter beater. What's yours?

1992 Honda Accord EX in Red. I got it from my friend which his dad used to own. 1 owner with 190k on it. My friend is also used to work at Honda as a mechanic so everything is in good shape. Timing belt changed, 1 new set of Michelin all seasons, 1 used set of winter tires. Paid $1500 for it. Car was fully detailed in and out too.

I'd be driving the STi all winter if I were you but to each their own. Any particular reason for stashing it away all winter when it'd be so at home on snow-covered roads???

Its not about that. Its more about the parts on the car, like his HKS coilovers and such that would not fare too well in winter conditions in the long run.
For the reason, I'm parking the X during winter and getting a beater. Still looking :)

That and the amount of accidents in the winter just increases, nobody wants some dolt on summers rear ending them Dec 21st.

That wouldn't stop me. Clean/maintain it properly and you won't have any issues...it's really not that hard. If I had one, I'd drive a Murcielago through winter without a bit of hesitation. If you take proper care of things then there's nothing to worry about it. What it really comes down to is how much time/effort you want to spend and most people don't have the time and/or can't be bothered, such as in this case.
If one is worried about getting hit by other drivers then don't drive at all, as far as I'm concerned.

The main reason for me to keep the car in the garage is because i really don't want to pull my coilovers out. One thing i thought about was, if 1 set of good winter tires for my car in 18s will be $1200, i'm really spending $300 more for a car that comes with everything. Also, gas in the winter is a killer. I rather drive a more economical fwd car that i can beat around with less amount of gas used then my STI.
The other thing is, my body kit is coming and this car will be in the shop for maybe 2 weeks and the price of me renting a car will not be smart because of the amount of money i have to pay.
All in all, i just think, i rather drive a car that i can beat around then to drive something i love so much i don't want to ruin it because of higher risk driving it in the winter.

It makes sense to drive a beater in your situation, I've seen your car at Nextmod, it's beautiful, i'm sure show quality, Driving a car like that in the winter is awful on the paint, and all the aftermarket parts.
The problem I see is people who have a bone stock (or close to) mazda 3, or something similiar, putting it in the garage in favor of an old piece of junk. My opinion is unless you have something really expensive or very custom on your car, DRIVE IT!!

Fair enough, I suppose. Can't blame you for wanting to keep the car pristine. We all by cars for different reasons =)

Um, i kinda got my civic cuz my buddy was moving to scotland and i picked it up for 200. Good thing though, my insurance went from $2006/year to $1004 per year for the civic and this is for 4 people insured. Although its only a mazda, the best part to having a beater is cheaper insurance, less gas, and best part.... I can park anywhere I want now. I dont care how tight the spot is because it doesnt matter if someone dings my beater

Ballsy or what? You need to be commended for being brave, or commited for your sacriligious actions rendered upon this historical vehicle.

Well, I put the 3 away in the warehouse today. The interior is all detailed and leather treated, etc. I'm gonna do the final 3 stage wax job of the year and cover her up tomorrow.
The Audi is up on jack stands in the garage (front flex lines and an outer dust boot for safety). I need to scoot down to CT and buy a pitman arm puller for the boot job ($20).
When are your 3's being put to sleep for winter?

I think i just need to overinflate my tires a little so theres less surface area touching the ground to prevent a flat spot.

isn't jackstands gonna remove the load from the suspension? and possibly fk it up
I'm probably just gonna put a battery tender instead of pulling the battery, whats the view on this?

I bought 4 carpet samples for under each tire and rolled the car onto them. That way the suspension still carries its load, but the carpet reduces tire sidewall and tread pad stress.
I brought the battery home where I'll maintain it at my battery station in the basement (boat, bike, quad, extras, power tools, rechargables). Kripes, I must have 15-20 freakin' batteries in all.

It is better to charge the battery before storage. If it is completely discharged the plates may sulphate and the battery would be pooched come spring.
I blast a 12v charge for about 15 minutes and then a 2v trickle charge for 6 hrs about once a month over the winter. Regardless what you do, a well maintained battery is only good for about 4-5 yrs in today's cars.

It'll be up and running again this week. It ran like new until the switch went.

Well, this car has proved to be a bit of a headache, but I got it running. The Multifunction Transmission Range switch fried on it. The part is a dealer only part ($480), but after two weeks I finally was able to source a used part.
The radio quit, but I found a new/reconditioned one today for $100.... and....
... the temperature control display decided to go dim on me... another $60.
Oh, and I need to buy a special VAG code reader that will allow me to erase the Dealer Service codes (check engine light after an oil change, air bag light/'cause this is tied into the faulty radio, ABS light if your pads wear thin), another $100.

For all the haters:

My car is parked in the parking lot, stored away until April.
Haters??? You drive a regular mazda 3. Nothing special with that ride for it to be stored for the winter.

At the end of the day, it's a Mazda 3. It's getting driven in the winter.

I don't normally agree with you, but +1 to this.
Technically this is my "beater", not that I have any winter mode pics of it...but I still have no issue DDing my MS3 and it's in winter mode right now. Although it won't be out much until the new clutch is in. That said, it's seen a few winters of snow/salt/ice/cold and taken it like a champ.

OMG stop the whining about a guy storing his Mazda. He wants to drive a truck in the winter so who cares what he does with his car. The next post I see about it gets creatively edited and then posted to the Hall of Shame.

Lol. I'm not storing the car because I think it's too nice and sick to drive in the winter. I'm storing it because it's $10 a month instead of $103 and if I have two vehicles, why wouldn't I just pick the truck to drive in the winter. I'm going to just start copying and pasting for you guys next time. Clear enough for you?

Insurance would be the big difference!
My Dakota costs me $70 a month in insurance mind you I only have fire and theft on it.
My mazda has full coverage and its $145.
If I decided to uninsure the Mazda and only insure the truck in would be saving money even with gas... Especially at these prices!! The Ford ranger 5 speeds are fun tho.. Girlfriends dad has one and actually has a pretty nice ride... Better than my Dak.

This is also half the reason why I'm storing my mazda
Insurance on my P5 is only $68 (basic)
Full coverage on my 2014 is $124
Second half is the brutality of winter, up here the city uses excessive amounts of salt, I just cannot subject my 2014 to this.

Do I need to go over it again. I swear you're either deaf or retarded. Or both. Maybe you would like to pay the extra $90 a month just so my car doesn't get stored. If not, Stfu and keep driving your mazda3 in the winter, and I won't.

And seriously? This isn't a thread for posting pictures of your only car in snow. It's a winter beater thread. There is a thread for random pictures elsewhere, so go there. Thanks.
