So I am looking to get a new smartphone. Based on what you have heard, know, or have seen, which is better among the three: Android vs IPhone 4 (Apple) vs Blackberry Bold/Curve (RIM). With the Android phones, refer to the HTC Desire and/or Samsung Galaxy Apollo

I want to do the following with my smartphone phone:
- Talk, text
- Surf the web
- GPS
- Play games
- Watch video clips/tv episodes
- Add any cool apps that I would use on a regular basis (not sure whats out there)
- Will be using Telus
- I will be using this phone for the next 2-3 years

Please let me know where you stand on this and why.

Based on your intended use, I'd prob go with Galaxy or iPhone.

I dont really know much about the Android phones, but for all the things you say you want to do, the iPhone (to me) seems to be the best option for you, it has tons of games/apps, texting is very simple as well as surfing the web. gps works great. youtube works great for clips. havent tried episodes though, although you can get the netflix apps and watch from there. But get some more feedback from Android users. I know they dont have as many apps as the iphone app store, but i heard theyre catching up. as for RIM, the games arent that great and there isnt much, they're still trying to catch up in the app world and there isnt much room for another party (Says Steve Jobs lol). I enjoyed the iphone a lot more with your list of stuff to do over the BB i had before, i only ended up using it for BBM/Email and if youre going to pay for a phone you might as well pay for something youre going to do a lot more on. Goodluck with your decision though lol

I've owned the original iPhone for a short while, and have played with all of the iPhones, and I had an android for a few months before getting a BB Bold 9700 a few days ago. The blackberry is great for reliability, and is very responsive. However, other than BBM, the phone is quite boring, for lack of a better description. The Android is nice, lots of customization, ton's of apps, but I found that it's stability was questionable at times, due to the relatively new nature of the OS. The iPhone is very slick, but I don't like how it's tied down by apple/itunes, and jailbreaking has it's downsides (ie no updates etc).

From the sounds of it, an iPhone or android will better suit your needs.

I've had the Samsung Galaxy S for about a month now. All I can compare it to is my iPod Touch (which is jailbroken) for apps, interface etc.

The iPhone does have more apps but I think every day the Android store is catching up. The nice thing about the Android phone is the ability to customize things as you want. There are apps for different wallpapers, themes and sounds. Yes you can do this with an iPhone, but you have to jailbreak it first and that is an issue with some people. I have almost all the same apps on my Galaxy as I had on the iPod Touch and the ones I am missing I am sure will be coming out in the near future. One thing I love about an Android phone is not having to deal with iTunes. I can drag and drop any file I want on the phone on any computer I plug into. I can choose from many different e-mail apps and web browsers. It will also play flash video off the net. The "swipe" keyboard is also a nice touch, and fast.

One app I really like and am not sure if the iPhone has is a You Tube downloader. You can go onto You Tube to watch videos, but then download it to your phone directly. I only use while on Wifi but it's pretty slick.

I can't put down the iPhone though. These things have such a hold on the market that if you don't mind Apple's vice like grip on your phone I don't think you can go wrong here. But to get the same funcionality as an Android you would need to jailbreak it. Then you would have quite a phone only held up by iTunes.

Just my opinions, but I do really enjoy my Galaxy S.

Based on what you've said the iphone is the only way to go. Based on browsing the net alone the Blackberry does not have the greatest browsing software. Plus if your going for the iphone 4 its WICKED FAST. Also for apps iphone again is the winner in this category. Android has some cool apps but still short of what apple is offering.

The drawbacks of the iphone are no flash support and as Mazda3X2 said you have to jailbreak it to be able to fully customize it. But thats about it overall go iphone trust me it's amazing :):):)

i was in this situation 2 months ago. for me it was either a HTC desire or iphone4. the iphone has everything on the desire plus some. the iphone4 is simply amazing. my only complaint is the not so scratch proof glass. the desire as a rubberized back which works great. my bro has a desire and its a great phone, just not as polished as the iphone4.

Exactly what i want to say. I went to a Galaxy S and i love it. Lots of customizable apps and tons of freedom using it since i don' have to worry about syncing to only 1 freakin computer. Camera is much much better then the iphone 4 since i compared it with an iphone 4 takin night pics. Battery life is also a + since i only need to charge mine once every 3 days and i use it every day. Tons of free games on the android market as well and the plus for me is that i can download chinese games too. My friend had so much problems trying to find the majong game i downloaded. He had to go into the chinese itunes in order to get the game i got.

Another thing is i can watch RMVB files from chinese movies/episodes right on my phone and the app is free. Speaker is louder then iphone 4 as well.

Another note is that the Galaxy is expandable with micro SD from its 16GB up to I believe 48GB. I liked this idea becuase to make sure I would have enough storage in the future I would have had to go with the 32GB iPhone which is pretty pricey. This way I could go cheaper right off the bat and expand later IF I need to.

I want to do the following with my smartphone phone:
- Talk, text (BB)
- Surf the web (iPhone)
- GPS (draw)
- Play games (iPhone based on current games and new game center)
- Watch video clips/tv episodes (iPhone for synced content, Android for flash sites)
- Add any cool apps that I would use on a regular basis (not sure whats out there) (iPhone)
- Will be using Telus (draw)
- I will be using this phone for the next 2-3 years (iPhone is the most advanced hw at the moment and would have the most longevity)

Please let me know where you stand on this and why.

Each phone has its strengths and weaknesses, based on the list above I would say the best all arounder would be the iPhone. The iPhone would also give you integration into other purchases you may make in the future such as an Apple TV for content streaming, remote control and things like air tunes for playing your music library wirelessly throughout your house. If you don't use itunes, have no plans to integrate your home audio and video then that doesn't matter at all. Google tv may do some of that with android as well in which case its a matter of which handset you like best

get a bb
What mobile phone discussion would be complete with the one man BB extremist fanboy club? As great as the BB is for work, it doesn't hold a very competitive candle to the use case scenarios above; this would be akin to someone asking which phone is best for doing 50+ e-mails a day and someone promoting a keyboardless device over the BB as the hands down winner. Each phone has its strengths, I don't think a BB would be the best fit for this use case but thats just my 0.02

^^ The Galaxy S can act as a media hub with the G-Mote app once the server is installed on your home PC. It can access your PC wirelessly through Wifi or 3G network allowing you to browse or stream media files or even office docs if you have the right apps to view / modify them. I access my home PC from anywhere I get a cell signal.

To add to the galaxy, the iphone is much heavier and thicker then the galaxy S. When you use an iphone 4 and pick up a galaxy S, you'll feel the significant difference in weight. And iphone will crack when you drop it. =)

I have the galaxy S too, and its very light. As mentioned above, way more customizing options. I find the iphone is very restricted, and its boring without jailbreaking it.

One issue with my phone is that im only getting about 7hours of phone life if I use it to the fullest, not sure how you are getting a great batt life pearly... are you using full data and apps?

+1 for Android! had the Galaxy S for more than a month now and lovin it! :hawt
only concern is the lag issue, not with android but with the phone. Android 2.2 Froyo update should fix that, just waiting for the release from samsung!

fyi you can play Playstation1 games using PSX4droid!! :huge smile
