I will be driving from Mississauga (SQ1 area) to Oshawa early in the morning, I want to know how early I need to get out in order to beat the traffic on a week day. 7:30am? 7am? or eariler....

Anything after 6:30, you're pretty much doomed.

how are you getting up to the 401? If you're planning on taking the 427 to the 401, most days if you're on the 401 by 7:00 you should be ok. If you decide you want to go through the QEW/Gardiner and then DVP I'd leave at least 30 minutes earlier. I"m assuming you've got to get to your place of work by 9?

I will be taking 403 then merge to 401 west
I'd say leave at 6 if you want to have a good head start with minimal traffic for the majority on your way there. once you hit about 6:30 it starts up and you are done for!

are you guys driving on the same streets that I do? I'm on the 401 eastbound everyday between 7:00 and 8:00 and it's usually fine, I wouldn't call it great but I've never had any real horrible experiences

I have no answer.....
....but I suggest you invest in some quality sunglasses.
I did a 2 week seminar in the 'Shwa
The morning commute eastbound has the sun in yo' face, as does the evening drive west

if you can swing it i would stay on the 403/410 to the 407 and take that to the other side of the city

I don't have a transponder and this is only a one time commute, not ready to pay like $30 or so for that morning trip. I guess I will wake up at 5am and get out at 6....

Well let's try to figure this out, what time do you have to be in Oshawa?

for someone who is not used to that type of commute it's "a lot of traffic"
so, if he wants to beat that traffic and not get stuck in the usual areas, then going earlier or much later is the way to do it.

would cost you $16.19 even without the transponder. https://www2.407etr.com/TollCalculator/tolls_calculator.aspx .
Take the 407 save yourself the aggravation.

What time do you have to be there? That'll really make this a much easier decision.

^ No time specific, Is for my personal stuff but I need to be there b4 8 or 8:30 at least.
Maybe I should consider 407....is absolutely no traffic on 407, right? lol
I only took 407 twice in my lifetime and it was my company that paid. lol

407 is pretty much always moving and usually pretty damn quick. Personally, I wouldn't spend the money but if you want to sleep in a little longer and not really have to worry about traffic then hit up the 407. Honestly, just hop on the 401 at 7am, you'll definitely be in Oshawa before 8:30 unless there is some massive accident.

or rain, or snow, or if its a monday or if there is an accident, or if there is a red car on the road... thats the worst for traffic on the 401 :chuckle

If you're still awake, here's a little shortcut that saves me a few minutes when traffic is heavy. It's pretty much become my daily route:
403 -> 401 -> 427N -> 409E -> 401.
It's a pain in the ass taking 2 additional highways just to end up on the 401 again, but the amount of traffic it bypasses is ridiculous. You rejoin the 401 just before Islington.

I might as well add this since I frequent the 401 during the rush. If you are going to stay in the collector on the 401 eastbound between 409 and the DVP, stay in the left lane. Traffic is caused by on/off-ramps to the 400/Black Creek, Allen and the DVP/404. Can be frustrating at times especially eb 401 before the 400/Black Creek exit with numerous last minute mergers tying up traffic combined with traffic merging onto the eb 401 from Weston Rd.

For sure, especially if it's got a blinding grin ;)

My experiences coming from the airport after dropping my parents off for their flights back to Hong Kong end of each summer is that by 7 traffic starts to gets heavy around the 400 area and it will be slow (80kph or so) all the way across much of the 401 that's in Toronto. So if you leave by 6 it would be better. Most likely if you leave by 7 you will still be able to get there on time but it'll be more frustrating. I'd prefer to leave after just brushing my teeth and such and grab a coffee and breakfast at the destination and relax before the needed arrival time.

If he leaves at 6 he might as well bring a futon he'll be there so early. He'll be there early if he leaves at 7, let alone 6.
Theres no traffic eastbound after the DVP, I travel eastbound every day to Whitby. Sunglasses are key tho lol

Yup. Going Eastbound, it's the Eglinton/427-->404/DVP Stretch that's always killer i.e. across the top of the city.

So I slept in and get out only at 7:30am....took the 407 suggestion and went from 403, 410 and 407 all the way til Brock at the east end...then join back on 401.....it's so smooth that I almost stund drove just by following cars in front of me on 407, lol
Thanks all for the suggestion and yes sun was crazy, good that I had my sun glasses on.
