Has anyone tried 225 width tires on the OEM 2010 GT Rims? If so what's your setup.

You can squeeze them on, but better to stick with a 215/45/17

My understanding was that this rim was wider and could take the 225 fine.

it's 17x7 actually. I measured it this morning. I got a set of 225 tires from a friend. I think I will give them a try.

Go for tires told me that they had put that size of tire on alot of Mazda with 2010 GT rims without any problems

Looks like tomorrow my 2010 speed3 rims will be gone and I'll be rolling on stock 2010 GT 17x7.

stock is 205-50-17. looks like 225-45-17 is a better fit than the 215-45-17 diameter wise. will it look retarded? Maybe I should get some aftermarket 17x7.5 or something.

Tons of ppl are running the 225-45-17 on the 2010 17x7 GT rims on M3F and M3R so we are good to go!

Ya and the speeds are 18x7.5 and I want them!

I ran 225/45r17s on my 05 gx for about 3 years straight never had any issues. Ran the 225/4018 on my 10 sedan no issues at all. You can go as wide as a 245 on all previous models without issues. MPS on the board was running 245 for the longest time on his speed. Rumor had it the 10 speed can run as wide as 255 but their are certain limitations to that

245 is a bit wide for a 7" wide rim don't you think ?

I'm just giving him options letting him know the widest tire he can get on the car. As john posted you can "squeeze" the tires on. I was just stating you can go much wider if you wanted to. The 245 will fit the rim it will just look a little funny as they will be somewhat buldged outwards

I had the 2010 speed3's and hated them for their weight. I sold them and went back to 2010 GT 17x7 LOL.

Does your car have extra power for the weight or is it bone stock?

pacmann33

Stock. Power isn't the problem at all, the car could have 500HP but the rims still feel heavy exactly the same on every car. Unfortunately, a heavy rim is a heavy rim. The increased unsprung weight will be felt the same regardless of the car's power. The rims will turn in like a heavy wheel... impede your suspension from working as well etc etc. Only thing the extra power would help overcome the extra weight is on acceleration, but the differences in weight we are talking about here, mere mortals could not notice the difference.

Even though on a scale the speed3's aren't much heavier than the stock 17's, because the barrel of the rim is larger, the bulk of the rim's weight is further away from the center of the rim and makes it feel equivalent (for example, I don't have numbers in front of me, but people have done the calculations on the web) to using a 30 pound 17 inch. Rim weight vs how it feels on the car is not a linear relationship. Ever inch you increase in rim size, the worse it gets. Another example would be our stock 17's are 21/22 lbs. to move up to an 18 that feels as light as our 17's, the 18 would have to weigh significantly less than the stock 17's just to feel equivalent. To feel an improvement you really need to drop big bucks on super light 18's (read RPF1 etc).
