THANK GOODNESS I DRIVE THIS BEATER. IT TOOK ONE FOR MY MAZDA. So like an hour ago, my girl's aunt backed up in her BMW X5 and hit my civic. She smashed my front left as I parked on the street across while she parked on the driveway. My left headlight is smashed, hood dented, fender pushed in, bumper scratched. Good thing is that my headlight still works except for my turn signal.

So now, if she were to hit my mazda.... I wouldn't really know what to do. But thank goodness thats not the case

Now it's what to do? Get her to fix my beater? Like money makes family awkward. I dunno what to do. Sigh... This will cost her at least $600. Her parents offered to pay for the fixing but obviously thats not happening. Ugh. I dont know whether to laugh or be mad. :bang

Just count yourself lucky to have the foresight to see this would happen.

Just because you're lower on the food chain in that family, doesn't mean that she shouldn't pay.

What if you had hit her X5?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.................................

Let the games begin.

BEATER FTW!!!! Wait till more snow falls and idiots come out.

Just get her to fix what needs to pass safety (light, etc) and just let the rest be. its family.

Perhaps it's just a Chinese thing, but I concur with Ben that money in family makes things awkward.

The unfortunate thing is, I believe you'll probably end up sucking it up. Taking money from her parents would make ME cringe, and heckling a member of her family for money just doesn't seem "dai fong"... I can't think of the proper english term for that word right now :chuckle

+1. getting her aunt to fix just whats needed shouldn't be a problem. your beater just took its first beating lol

They/she drives an X5, they have enough money to fix it since an oil change from the BMW dealership would probably cost more than to fix your beater.

The one thing about Chinese families is they are cheap. They'll drive the X5 but they won't want fix things if they don't feel like they should/have to. They'll probably look at your Civic and think, he wants $600 to fix that POS?

Its a matter of principal. "You break, you buy!".

Charge them the full amount! Its not your fault she ignord the fancy backup camera on the X5.

Ugh, i really dont know what to do anymore. She said she'll pay for it yesterday over the phone. So I was gonna go richards to hopefully get it done cheaper. But now i woke up this morning and i feel bad about making her pay even though its her fault......

And Phil, as for just replacing the headlights, you can see from the pics that I wish i could just simply replace the headlight. But then my car will look so ugly..... but on the other hand, it is a beater. But i also dont want to drive with a dented up beater. I say its a beater but i still want it to look decent. Its worse enough that im driving a civic (no offense to you civic owners out there, but this one has 105hp and no power anything lol) but now it has to look like a REAL BEATER lol

Well heres some pics, enjoy :)

Man I know what you mean about taking money from family. This summer my uncle backed into my dad's 09 Camry, sideswiping the front quarter and both driver and rear door. My uncle insisted on paying for the damage, and ended up covering the insurance deducible.

Thing is she really doesnt care about her car though. Her car is 2004 and it doesnt have a backup camera. You should see the rust on her car. They dont wash the car at all. She has different values being that she just doesnt care about materials. Like if i were to hit her X5, she probably would not make me pay. Which is why im having such a hard time debating

Ben, Standard Auto Wreckers will probably have all the parts you need in order to fix that on the cheap. There's always that chance it won't be black but hey, it's a beater right? lol

When I had my truck I never drove it in winter and always drove a beater for winter.

One night I was backing into a freinds drive way with my bester when my best friend opened the door and my door hit the house while I was backing up ....all i did was straightented out the dent where the door buckled and and drove it like that.. When you open the door it would drop down and it was pushed into fender... My best friend offered to fix it but I didn't worrie about it cause it would have cost more to fix then what the car was worth.

Me personally I wouldn't have the heart to take money to fix the beater... If it was your mazda then ya take the money to fix it IMO

sorry to hear that man good luck with getting it fixed

Yea, i know what you guys mean. Although it is a beater, I would still like it to look decent. This car has some rust on the right rear quarter panel but i even fixed that because it's really ugly to drive with. But this is honestly too much for me. I wouldnt even feel good driving this.

And yea Michael, im going to pick up a head light from there. I saw it for $85. As for the rest, im just gonna ask my uncle to help me take out the fender, punch it out as much as i can with a rubber mallet, straighten up the hood, and spray paint/clear coat the fixed area. This should hopefully only cost me for the headlight.

Like afterwards, in the spring, i may keep this car on the insurance so my brother can drive it so i dont want it looking completely like a POS.

You wrote that you are associated with this family because of a girlfriend. You are not family.............. YET!! Do you have intentions of becoming family? Therein lies the problem.

Having wrote this; I'm assuming "dai fong" means "not cool under the circumstances" ????

I have no clue when it comes to Mandarin or Cantonese.

Good things happen to good people.

If they're nice people, just do as you said, and take the $100 or so to fix up the headlights, and bang out the rest of it.

"That'll buff right out"

Cool cool. It might be cheaper if you go into the U-Pull-It area and take one out yourself but $85 doesn't seem too bad as it is.

I understand where you're coming from though. Just because it's a winter beater doesn't mean it needs to look like a POS. Also, driving with that kind of damage makes it look like you don't care for cars and don't know how to drive lol. I'd be in the same boat as you if I had to decide whether or not to fix it completely.

If you don't feel comfortable having them pay for all of it, one thing I have done sometimes is split the cost of the repair. So in this case, both you and your aunt split the cost of the headlight, or something to that extent.

If they are offering to pay for the car immediately after the whole thing happened.
Then I don't think you should feel bad because clearly, they really want to pay for it.

If they didnt, they would tell you that they would pay for it after 1-2 days after the whole thing happened, it basically means that they were iffy on paying and needed time to think about it. lol.

Bottom line..dont feel bad. I'm sure her aunt feels terrible about the whole thing.

Soyabean
11-15-2010, 11:07 AM
Well her aunt said she will will pay. But she said to jsut buy the headlight because its cheaper but she doesnt know the damage she did. It was late. She just hit it and she called me telling me she hit my car because she had to go home so I didnt know until after.

She sounds iffy for paying too. But whatever. So far, I just signed up an account for the Toronto Civic Club, found a guy who was selling a left headlight for $25!!!! But hes in hamilton. Hopefully this goes through

There's an extent to how much one can stand in terms of damage on a car. Everyone is different ya know...

I mean... if I had a beater, I could stand rust and dents here and there... but driving a beater with a smooshed up front end would drive me crazy.

Thank you Michael for your understanding. Although I classify it as a beater compared to my mazda3, i cant drive with a front end like that. Its just embarassing. Looks like I cant drive

Wouldn't you have to pay if it was the other way around?

........Cuddle your cutie, pi$$ on your aunt, put up with the family affair, and move on.

Stop wasting cyber-space.

This is silly.

Shows how much your in laws love you ROFL..if you have any.
Why would he "pi$$" on his aunt -_-

Anyways, if I was him, I'd be worrying about the car too because I wouldn't want to take any money from my girlfriend's family/relatives and would tell them "Noooo its ok" if they try and give me money.
And if I was the one who crashed into my girlfriend's aunt's car, I'd let her know and insist paying for it..even if she says not to.

I got quoted at $800 to fix this from 2 places.

I'm going to fix everything myself. Used parts + rattle can spray paint. Her aunt insisted on paying but im just going to ask for parts which is really not much. Painting and instaling will be done by myself. Fender is being painted atm. Just waiting to apply clear coat and i will install everything on maybe tues?

So this works out for the both of us. I get a decent looking car again and she is paying very minimal. Win-win for both :)
